Can a larger gas can fit in a firemaple pot with soto windmaster?

Yes. I used the next canister size up, ditching the toaks 550 insert, on my PCT hike with this setup.

This is just a fantastic idea and construction. I'm happily surprised to apparently have found the very first introduction video, and that it wasn't that long ago. I remember checking this out many years ago, when a friend talked about it. But I didn't realize then it was such a recent invention.

I learned later that there had been precedent going back to 1876: www.tensaoutdoor.com/origin-of-the-tensa4-hammock-stand/?v=7516fd43adaa

@@cleverchimp 🙂 Interesting read! And of course, 1876. There's so many mechanical inventions that were made around that time. So it existed 150 years ago. Or - who knows - 3000 years ago...? 😮🙂

Garbage ....I did 3 separate boil tests between this pot and my 1100ml Toaks titanium pot with .5 liter of water and there was no difference between the boil times. This was using a Soto Windmaster stove. Not worth the money as a heat exchanger pot over my Toaks, especially for the weight penalty....BTW all my times were all about 1:35

Not calling dishonesty, but I must question your report in the light of many, many other tests demonstrating the efficacy of HE pots. Yes, there are trade-offs on fuel efficiency vs weight that tilt the net efficiency one way or the other based on length of a given backpack. I freely admit that I am biased toward fuel efficiency in ways that might not always pencil out given the outrageous metabolic demands of carrying an extra few grams so many miles in my pack ;-). I just got the new 600ml FireMaple Petrel HE pot. I freaking love it: locks onto the Soto tri-flex support, putting the flame 100% inside the HE cavity which acts as a wind screen. Even if the wind blows the flame sideways off the pot, the flame must pass through the HE element.
@InOurElement

@cleverchimp I am waiting for that one to come in the mail. I am sure it will be much more efficient 🙂

Sure, the Ponderosa is going to do more damage to your webbing than the webbing to the bark - but you could put some sticks parallel to the tree trunk between the webbing and the bark. Gives a good example for someone not sensitive to the type of tree. Also, if you are in an "official" campsite, the park host/ranger won't care that the bark is iron-strong. If you use wide straps or the stick idea, it will eliminate an annoying conversation. I love the UQP because I don't have to set my UQ perfectly. It doesn't have to "seal" - it's more of a wind block. UQP's are great. My UQP's are all suspended/connected with shock cord. The purpose of the feet elevated is to prevent sliding (nylon is slippery) toward the foot end. Next time, please show the pack fully packed. I'm curious how it fits with that bear canister. Thank you for the video. People need to know a hammock is a viable option. If there's an area with no trees - just put a ground cloth down, suspend your tarp between your trekking poles, lay the hammock on the ground cloth, and lift the bug net up off your face by tying it on your poles. Oops - you'll still need some kind of pad. A ¾ length pad isn't too big/heavy. The comfort is worth the redundancy of carrying a UQ and a small pad.

Get A SNAKE SKIN
@tensacrew
@tensacrew Жыл бұрын
I own snakeskins. I use a mesh one for my tarp only. As developed by Hennessy, a hammock snakeskin contains only the hammock, not quilts and bedclothes. There are products described as lazy slug tubes that contain all. I think Anaconda is a new trademark for same. I want my underquilt protector/gear sling to convert to a lazy slug tube. I don't want to carry a separate lazy slug tube when the UQP is so close to being redundant.

Thank you for the input ( and the output thereof) and the information. Bought a UQ protector and top cover due to this. The UQ Protector is priceless and makes a whole difference. Have made myself a small elastic from the head ends continuous loop, and it serves a nice purpose.
@cleverchimp
@cleverchimp Жыл бұрын
A friend also added elastic to my UQP ends after I ripped it due to lack of strain relief. I may still mod the UQP to zip to itself over the top of the ridgeline to act as a "lazy slug tube" containing all quilts, sleep clothes, etc for fast cramming into pack and redeployment.

I decided to pack setup differently. DDhammock makes a "sleeve". This is a cca 10cm sleeve in diameter, which stays at one end of my hammock till I want to packit. Then I pull it from one end to another like a sock and all my setup is covered in it. It doesn't take underquilt and sleeping bag, however all the rest including underquilt protector is there. This "sock" then packed in seatosummit compression sack. Same sleeve I use to pack my tarp. Super easy and quick setup. Basically you tie to the tree just a thin tube (sock), just after that you strip the sleeve. Another point to Todd video. I was not happy with hiding stuff in the underquilt protector. I discovered a "hammock for stuff" - again from DDhammock. Small and simple piece of cloth tied to ends of my hammock, situated just below the underquilt. It takes 25kgs, so easily you fit there your shoes, even whole bag. You reach it easily from hammock if needed. Tested yesterday (winter, freezing).

I hate these indoor boil test videos. The JB Stash has awful performance in the field as even the slightest breeze will extend those boil times to well over 10 minutes for 2 cups (tested myself).

I hiked 1300 miles of the California PCT with this setup. High winds were normal, as were sub-freezing temps at altitude. I’ve been extremely happy with this setup. Other hikers were amazed at boil speed. Eventually I sent home the inner rehydration cup to be able to fit a larger fuel canister, as resupply opportunities thin out in and after the Sierra.

Tip: Tie a loop on the the end of your continous loop so that you can easily pull the becket hitch out and save your hands.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9SnpLOB1tu0gqc.html

Thank you. I was vaguely aware of this tip, but insufficiently motivated. I just tied an overhand knot in the continuous loops themselves, shortening them for even more flexibility hanging in tight spots, and the knot against the Becket functions as advertised to make untying easy.

I've cooked eggs in it without scorching. The WindMaster has good low flame capability. Mostly I do just use it for boiling, with the Toaks/cozy being a rehydration vessel and bowl/mug. Makes for easy cleanup to avoid browning foods in either.
