is three main branches are the way to go for the tree form or it's more of a personal choice? If kept more than 3 main branches, will the tree look messy when it's fully grown? Thanks.
@SpringMeadowNursery
@SpringMeadowNursery 4 ай бұрын
Great question! The three main is a typical standard for a multi-stemmed tree but it is certainly a personal choice, you could do more if you'd like - it could start to look more crowded with a larger amount of main stems but that also can depend on the angle and direction the branches are growing in. All in all, as long as you like the look it won't matter for the plant ☺

I am trying one of the Prime in a 24 inch pot (purchased today a 3 gallon) 11/11/23. Keeping it in the East Garden morning sun afternoon shade (by 1:30p,) - ZONE 8A North Texas so I am HOT in the summer. Pot will allow me to keep it watered if needed. What are the thoughts so my plant can thrive thru 2024 and hopefully plan in the area.

@SpringMeadowNursery

@@vincentdesapio Of course, always happy to help! All of our rhododendrons are full sun to part shade, you would be fine to grow this in your location, the less sun might cause the plant to not bloom as heavily but it will still grow fine and get blooms, just not as many as if it had more sun 🙂

My quick fire fab flopped terribly last year and broke so many its own stems in just normal rains. It was the second year in ground and I wasn’t too impressed by it. Not sure how it’s gonna perform this year since it lost all the stems from las year. Beautiful flowers though.
@SpringMeadowNursery
@SpringMeadowNursery Жыл бұрын
It is possible that the plant is still getting established. It would be a good idea to prune your hydrangea in late winter/early spring by about 1/3 of the total plant. This will help the plant to develop stronger stems. Thank you for reaching out! If you continue to have this issue, don't hesitate to reach out :)

So lack of cold temps reduces flower production ? This might explain the poor flower production I’m getting-the winters are very mild lately. 😢
@jasonrekker4328
@jasonrekker4328 21 күн бұрын
How mild? If it stays above 40F all winter then maybe....However most people in more northern climates have poor flowering because the cold winters kill the flower buds. Your plant might regrow with lots of leaves each year, but if the tips of the branches always die back in winter, you're losing most of your flower buds.
@TinthiaClemant
@TinthiaClemant 20 күн бұрын
@@jasonrekker4328 hydrangeas can take cold temperatures and in the past the winters that were very cold didn’t reduce the flowers on hydrangeas so I don’t think freezing or cold temperatures is at play. the hydrangeas on Cape Cod, which this past winter got brutal temperatures their hydrangeas this year are blooming like crazy
@jasonrekker4328
@jasonrekker4328 10 күн бұрын
@@TinthiaClemant have they ever bloomed well for you? Another thing people do is cut them back after next years flower buds have set, so then you just get lots of leaves and no flowers. Normally you would want to avoid trimming these kinds of hydrangeas after mid July until after they have bloomed next year. Any cutting back in mid to late summer, winter, or spring to “clean them up” will be cutting off flower buds

Everyone talks about how to protect hydrangeas from the cold… how do I protect it from the heat? Here in San Antonio TX we have had temperatures up into the 100s almost every day for the past month and I am told it will get hotter in August. Can Limelight Prime take the heat? I do plan to put it in dappled sunlight and mostly shade but still even in the shade it feels like 100° and due to drought we have water restrictions so I can’t “just water it more.”
@SpringMeadowNursery
@SpringMeadowNursery 2 жыл бұрын
You're right! It's certainly harder to protect them from the heat. Limelight Prime is hardy from USDA zones 3-8 so if you're in zone 8, you would be good. 'Limelight' is hardy into zone 9 so you could consider planting that one as well. This video helps give some tips on growing panicle hydrangeas in the south, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/htpombpixtPepXk.html Adding a good 2-3" layer of mulch will help to keep the roots cooler and retain more water.
