Love that side by side map program. I use a similar technique...got an app called Photo layers. I take a screenshot of an old map, then overlay it over a screenshot of a Google map, then use a tool to make the old map opaque and show where old features are on the new map (if that makes sense). Finally save the picture and refer to it when I'm in the field. Has been useful for finding hot spots in fields where I wouldn't have even thought to look.

Very similar on how we do research in the USA. The laws for detecting vary from state to state and even within each community. I live in a very historical area that is surrounded by the American Civil War. All my permissions are from private property owners. Looking forward to the next video. I’ve been detecting for a long time and we can always learn something new.

Thank you, Anthony. My background in teaching genealogy stood me in good stead for this video, so much crossover in studying maps and archive information. I added a few resources to the description link, sources like the Internet archive also have maps from all over the world. I find American Civil War detecting fascinating, Aquachigger is the reason I bought a detector in the first place. I do find it funny that as much as I would love to find something American Civil War, Chigg gets ecstatic over Colonial date items. I find coins from the17th & 18th century on a regular basis, it is all about rarity in your area, isn't it? :) Happy Hunting!

I am relatively new to detecting so looking forward to this series. Funnily enough the farm I have had some success on has no special history or anything to make seem like it has potential, where as two others that looked really promising on paper with good features are pretty much undetectable due to contaminated green waste..I am sure this is not the usual situation, but sometimes only swinging your detector will tell you what the true potential is..

Really good video...Just a few comments from a slightly different perspective...Spades: which ever you buy make sure it has good "boot treads" on the top of the blade like the Evo..spades that lack these are uncomfortable to dig with over extended periods and will eventually wreck the soles of your boots... Also, avoid spades and trowels with teeth on..they don't really cut roots to any degree because you can't get a sawing action going in a hole, rather they tend to hang up on stuff. The exception would be the hori-hori garden knive shown which tend to have a different style of "teeth" and are usually exceptionally sharp. If you detect in woodland, it's far easier to use secuteurs to snip through roots...with regards gloves, for winter, you can get waterproof "coldstore" work gloves which are brilliant and usually very reasonable priced, I use UCI Koolgrip Artic Thermal gloves which are about £7 delivered from Amazon and have also used the slightly cheaper OX Thermal waterproof gloves which are about £5 delivered again from Amazon ...Lastly, get a couple of those cheap rectangular rubber car mats that cost about 99p and keep them in the boot of your car..they are brilliant for throwing on the ground to stand on when you want to change into or out of your wellies/boots; no more trying to balance on one leg to keep your sock off the wet/muddy floor! lol

@@3tonesthetruth962 a decent jacket for winter time a good spade for digging finds up with and a fishing vest or jacket with loads of pockets, the priority is much about the same as i would have done it. I am planning on getting out as soon as the ground gets a bit easier to dig in hopefully be the next couple of weeks fingers crossed 🤞

I'm heading out - back to a spot where I found at least 5 Irish coins - all dated between 1980 and 1998. I recovered them in Park Mode 2 - with reduced sensitivity (as per your first SG Basics tutorial) - I now want to go experiment with the first two modes - and increased sensitivity! It is a filled site so maybe there is another interesting layer a bit deeper! Thanks again for all your useful tips!!

I feel like the park modes are missing some targets and not detecting everything... for me, it looks like the field mode is the one that finds the most objects... i'm using 2.78... is somebody else having the same problem? park 2 should be the fastest mode but it does not find all the objects that the field mode does...
