Ratnakar garu, I have read that the original ragam of this thillAna was mulunji dhanyAsi. It was later tuned by Lalgudi sir to Dhanashri as revealed by Semmangudi sir because the latter sounded much better and was easier to sing. And Voleti garu makes it so divine! Especially the taans he does at the anupallavi section. I have never heard the mulunji dhanyAsi version before, so I am not the right person to ask where you can find it.

@@JayramSataluri Jayaram garu, I have also heard that Bhogindra shayinam was initially sung in Dhanyasi. It is hard to imagine how we could not listen to the kriti in kuntalavarali.

Ratnakar garu, I wonder how the Dhanyasi tune would be. I don't know if Kanda Chapu would be the fit for that version if we get a chance to listen to it. Did you know there are two versions of Pahi Sarasanabha both tuned by Dr. BMK garu? One is in Bilahari and the other in Saveri. Both commercially released and both pleasing to listen to.

@@JayramSataluri Dr. Bmk garu was a multi faceted genius. His understanding of the Samskrita bhasha was of a scholarly level. It is quite difficult to set a single tune for a particular lyrics , let alone to two different ragas. I think this kind of fete was only achieved by syama Sastry in the past because he has written two different lyrics (birana varalicchi and himadrisute) to the same tune. So I think in a way Dr. Bmk garu has imbibed all the great aspects of Trimurtis of Carnatic music

I would add the great aspects of Annamacharya, Purandaradasa, Kshetrayya, Jayadeva and many more composer/vaggeyyakkaras Pre-Trinity. The way Dr. BMK garu lives the sahitya in any language is unparalleled. And of course his compositions; no words are enough to describe the genius he is. Please continue to share your knowledge and love for Bharatiya Sangeetham especially muraLi gANam, pinAkapAni gANam which includes Voleti gANam and others. These conversations are enriching. Thank you.

Brilliant 🙏 especially on the swarakalpana. All the musicians usually follow a pattern of singing 5s, 6s ane 7s etc like g r s n p or g r2 s n p etc., Both TRS and TNS do it differently like in hamsadhwani s s g r r for 5 instead of saying s n p g r or something like that, making it difficult to understand it in the first pass. You need to be so attentive when listening to them. Of course, BMK does it in a different way too. 🙏🙏🙏

Prince rama varma once said that bmk garu sang the swarashtra varnam on some independence day. One of the audience present asked him whether the ragam was suryakantham, sourashtra, or chakravakam. Bmk garu instantly replied that the raga was swarashtra, since it was the 25th independence year of Bharat and to commemorate the event, he said so

I have an early recording of the Swarashtra Varnam. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jrWngMxjs823XXk.htmlfeature=shared But I believe he composed it before 1972 as his voice sounds late 1960s (1968-69) in the above recording.

Yes, Ratnakar Potturi garu. I am aware of Rama Varma sir's lecture and have heard it. Regardless of what year it was composed, it is a brilliant varnam that not many people have heard and rarely do we hear it sung by the leading musicians. You seem to be a muraLi gANam admirer. I have a few questions for you: 1) When was the first time you heard muraLi gANam? 2) What are the major characteristics of muraLi gANam that stand out from others? 3) Did you get to see him live? If yes, where and what were the krithi list? 4) What are your favorite krithis rendered by him? 5) What is your favorite period of his? Like 1970s? 1960s? 1990s? 6) What will be his most everlasting legacy? Everyone is welcome to answer the above questions. Thank you.

@@JayramSataluriIn this particular concert, MBK is at his best and every krithi has been sung as masterpieces. The ease with which his silken voice glides through Ragavardhini or Kambhoji is just amazing. Little attempt to sing along will indicate how difficult they are to emulate. Swarapratharams are beautiful in every place. Hindolam made me feel to be floating in air. Thats how light and beautiful it was. MBK's participation in the Thani shows his overall mood in the concert. Like how MBK told Prince Rama Varma - I dont sing, it just comes!. This concert is one of them. ❤

Violinist Smt.Rukmini is another artist who didn't get due recognition. In thodi at 1.57 onwards she beautifully delineates the thanam. Needless to say about VR. His support at Kuntalavarali and Hindolam as also while reverse travel in rtp is a real treat. By the by what are the ragamalika items? M/Marutham, Revathi, K/Varali and Hindolam. Pl correct me. TRS's talent as a teacher comes in handy and has a unique way of rendering some kritis. Thanks in tons for sharing a wonderful concert.🙏

Dear Jayaram ji Thank you for your kind words. Well I am an ordinary rasika of C/Music; not a disciple of TRS sir. Of course his singing is very forward looking and he is innovative too. His students were very fortunate. He has popularized many kritis of lesser known composers especially those of his contemporaries.; Truly respected the tradition but found lot of scope for freedom/Manodharma. I think very few would have rendered the Varnams in so many ragas as TRS did. I have heard him in person twice, once in Pune. All songs of his I listen to. The trend that he set in and the students he gave confidence to, are the legacy that he has left behind. Sad that missed out on Sangeetha Kalanidhi. Thank you once again for this upload of the Concert.🙏
