Thank you! I am working on controlling the tempo. I found that those two preludes are not necessarily needed to be played too fast. And interestingly Chopin indicated the specific tempo (66 per quarter note) for the etude, which is quite fast. So I’m trying to play the etude not too slow.

❤ can I ask you something? What do you feel or what do you think when you are playing Chopin?
@mchoi-amateur-pianist
@mchoi-amateur-pianist 16 күн бұрын
Sure!! It depends, but mostly I think of Chopin, and what he would have imagined or felt composing the pieces. I also gain inspirations and vivid images from various sources when I fall in love with certain pieces by him. For example, these Nocturnes Op55, I think of Chopin traveling in Edinburgh. I think of Chopin singing with the piano and also with a tenor and a soprano that would be singing in his imagination. And I also think of my memories from my past trip to Edinburgh. I think of the scenery I saw in Edinburgh.

Wonderfully sensitive and musical playing! Thanks for sharing. Out of curiosity, how large is this room? Do you find the volume to be an issue?
@mchoi-amateur-pianist
@mchoi-amateur-pianist Ай бұрын
Thank you :) My room is small/narrow. about 10' by 20'. There was only single option where to place this piano -- by the corner on the 10' wall side. Yes, this was a very raw take with minimal acoustic treatment I'm trying first. And the mic is placed at about 4 feet away. So it's only taking the room ambience but not catching a bit more direct sound from the piano. I increased the overall volume afterwards I think, but increasing louder than this starts creating distorted (clipped) sounds at peaks. In general I think classical music recordings are low in volume due to the wide dynamic range.
@mchoi-amateur-pianist
@mchoi-amateur-pianist Ай бұрын
Maybe I understood in a different way 🙃 I wonder if you meant the volume of the piano in my room, not the volume of the recording? If it's the former, so far I don't have any issue. I find that keeping the lid closed generates just the right level of volume for daily playing. Opening the lid certainly increases the volume but I find it's okay. I'll experiment with acoustic panels more over time.
@jamesdolezal8936
@jamesdolezal8936 Ай бұрын
@@mchoi-amateur-pianist Yes, I meant more the volume of the piano in your room! I think the recording sounds lovely. I ask because I'll be bringing a large grand piano into a ~12' x 12' room, and I'm a bit worried about the volume. Seeing your large piano in a similarly cozy space gave me hope that the sound might be manageable!
@mchoi-amateur-pianist
@mchoi-amateur-pianist Ай бұрын
@@jamesdolezal8936 my idea right now is to attach diffusion panels or mix of diffusion and absorption panels on the walls that the piano sound would originate from. And absorption panels on the walls that would be the audience side. This way you would efficiently diffuse the piano sound and then prevent reflection from the walls that the piano lid opens towards, so the sound doesn’t come back to the piano.

Great as always. If you really want to record the piano audio with it's full potential I would recommend recording either using wav or flac, flac is more recommended because it's a lossless compressed audio file, but youtube don't support it and convert the files to the opus format

Thank you for sharing your idea. Yea I was thinking the same. And even though I connect my iPhone with the mic, the video recording apps seem not having an option to make the audio to be WAV. It's rare to find someone who really likes to play piano and keep doing it for years. I have some curiosities about your journey. I got this piece when I was about ten years old. I stopped learning piano when I was about 12 to pursue my dream to be an astrophysicist. When I picked up this piece again, I was about 25. This recording is a memory of that time. Time of my piano hasn’t ticked during that long hibernation. But when I resumed, I was able to recover to play this piece relatively quick.

😃 thank you!!! I am very happy with this piano. Certainly I played many pieces on it before I made the purchase decision. Tested numerous recordings after I brought it with me 😄. I think I should put my mic closer between the lid and the rim of the piano. In th e recording, I put the mic about 4 feet away. Mine is a compact condenser mic so if placed a bit further it doesn’t catch the bass too well. I took this piano after I tried playing on it several times at the piano dealership. Visited three times. I did side-by-side comparisons at the store during my visits. There was also a rebuilt steinway and more expensive Bechsteins. But this specific piano kept me astounded and hypnotized. It responded right away. Usually I need time to get to know a piano that I first meet. This one I didn’t need that. While it’s considered a baby grand, it’s on the larger side in that category. The bass sounds vigorous, the middle registers are warm, and the treble is crystal clear. Different tones across the three sections. I searched online about Chopin’s Pleyel piano while I was making the decision during the week, and I found similar statements about his piano from him and others. And I found that this will be the piano I have to fall in love with.

@@mchoi-amateur-pianist What an amazing story of how this acquisition came to fruition! Thank you for sharing. And yes of course it makes sense that you were courting it at the dealership for some time (it's worth a fully loaded luxury vehicle) and pianos are very personal. I meant if that's the first piece you played on it at home after it acclimated. The three distinct register ranges timbres you describe sounds like an ideal situation to have because it would underscore expressions of different feelings and make different voices stand out better. Mic'ing is an art in itself, I know because I streamed and recorded a dozen shows in the past year. Only one out of a dozen had everything set correctly where there is no clipping distortion at high volumes, entire register range is properly picked up, and mixing levels with other instruments are all balanced. It's a shame they don't put care into the audio set up. One again, great acquisition and congrats again! Looking forward to future uploads played on it.

@LogioTek :D yea I played various things and the first thorough recording was the Nocturne 55-2, although not posting it publicly. Yes I was ok with my current mic for a while, but with this powerful piano my dissatisfaction might grow over time… 😅 I will try several times more and see if it can be improved by putting the mic right between the rim and the lid, or just inside the piano 1-2feet above the strings below the lid.

Hi, I'm using the KZfaq built-in translator, so I hope I got the point of your question right, and I hope you can find my answer helpful. The sound of N1X is digital, bottom line. But so far the sound sampling technology that Yamaha has put into this piano seems the latest, and I'm 95% content with it. I also haven't needed to deal with out-of-tune strings ever over the past couple of years or so, since I got this piano. No maintanance needed at all. And the good quality sound remains the same all year around. But the bottom line is, again, that it sometimes sounds digital. I feel there's some limitation especially when I want to play quiet, intimate, and intricate notes. I got N1X mainly because of its authentic grand piano action. I wanted to train myself for recitals, which often I got to play at a grand piano. Acoustic upright piano would sound great if it's always well maintained and in tune. But personally that doesn't fit to my purpose cause upright action is very different from grand action that I need to get used to.
