🤣🤣. They are a very good brick and soak in very little moisture, they are used a lot on plinth courses on houses or at the bottom of garden walls. Nightmare to lay in the winter as they take ages to go off as they don’t draw the moisture out of the mortar like other bricks

The arrows on the back of the tiles are there for the factory to calibrate their systems. If at quality check there is a discrepancy in the cut edge of tile the arrow will indicate which part of the cutting process is faulty. Nothing to do with laying direction of slab, although you can of course follow the arrows if you wish.

Beautiful work as always buddy. The quality on the video is amazing. I can see that lovely mortar in all its detail. That is a very long retaining wall. And this vid is perfect timing as I’ll be starting the blockwork for my wall in a few weeks. Nice to see you’ve got a new helper. Hope he’s eager to learn from a master! Are those wall ties for the concrete to cure around to grip onto the blockwork? And that footing for it looks like a monster. What dimensions is it? Got to be 400mm deep like mine.
@SamDaviesBuilder

Thanks! New GoPro so that explains the better quality. Yea Danny is turning out to be a quick learner but he’s going into the motor trade in September. Ties are to grip into the concrete backfill yea, just to tie it all together a bit more. I didn’t do the foundation but that is a huge pour and at least 400mm like you say, it was because when they dug out the first bit it was lower than the house next doors shallow foundations. I think the guy that did the shuttering and pour was glad to get that concrete in before any movement happened!

Awesome video. A few questions: 1) where do you place the food or charcoal? 2) Is it the drip tray? I’m asking because the drip tray needs to catch the drippings and doesn’t that become messy and extinguish the flame? Is there a way to separate the charcoal or wood from the drip tray ? 3) what type of mortar do you use? I see so many from the quick dry stuff to the slow dry stuff? 4) is there a way to create a lid so the food can smoke and cook more evenly and to protect the food while cooking from bugs and things like this? Any ideas on how to incorporate a lid?
@SamDaviesBuilder

1: The food is placed on the top grill 2: The charcoal is placed on the lower grill and then there is a solid tray to catch falling charcoal/drips. It does become messy but the same as any other charcoal BBQ 3: I used a standard mortar, 4:1 mix of sand and cement. 4: You could create a lid but it would need something custom made, this is a very basic charcoal bbq. You could fix a lid to the top course of bricks if you wanted a lid although you would then need to close the front of it in but still have some air vents somewhere to get air into it to help it burn.

Hope you can help out with this. For context to the questions let’s say I use a 40oz container for each part of my sand and cement. In other words, I’ll put 40oz of sand 5 times and 40oz of cement once per mix. 1. Why is plasticiser necessary for the 5:1 ratio? 2. Could I go without it and have a strong base for the pavers? 3. What do I lose without it even if I’ve got the 5 parts sand and 1 part cement? Is it worth tripping about? 4. If I’ve got to use it, any alternatives to plasticiser for the 5:1 ratio because from my brief research it seems like it isn’t common to find in the US in 5L? 5. Given the context above, how much plasticiser should I pour into the 40oz container per 5:1 sand/cement mix? 6. Would I still need to use a weed barrier underneath the 4-6 inch gravel base since a full layer of mortar is being used under each paver. 7. Do you still brush in polymeric sand between the joints when using this method (i.e. the 5:1 mortar mix) as the base for paver? Would appreciate any links to good plasticisers in the US and also any alternatives.
@SamDaviesBuilder
@SamDaviesBuilder 12 күн бұрын
Hi, I may struggle to answer these correctly as you are in the US and things will be different to the UK. 1: Plasticiser adds air to the mix and increases its workability, we wouldn't be able to make a mix without plasticiser here. 2: I wouldn't recommend going without it but you can try 3: You lose the workability of the mix (if you are laying with a dry mix then you don't need plasticiser) 4: You may have another name for plasticiser in the US? 5: Each brand of plasticiser will have different amounts you need to put in a mix, it will explain on the bottle what you should put in for amounts of sand/cement. 6: I've done jobs without a weed barrier before the stone and they have been fine but it can help to stop the stone mixing with the soil underneath. 7: You can brush in the sand like you say but over here we point between the gaps with sand and cement as we do 12mm gaps between this style of slabs. Hope this helps you
