Breath of the Wild had a superior story with better shrines, characters, and side quests. The part that was disappointing the most is that before the game came out Nintendo was selling to everyone that the main reason why people should be excited about the game is the fact that we were going to the sky. That was the main selling point. Come to find out that it’s just small copy and paste islands with the same exact shrine puzzles for nearly all of them and the two sky dungeons are incredibly short and easy. The depths were just as tedious if not worse. This means that 90% of the entire game still takes place on the same surface and the same hyrule as Breath of the Wild and its not as impactful or meaningful as visiting these areas the first time around in Breath of the Wild. Tarrey Town is a perfect example. I’m not trying to build cars and planes. I’m trying to play a damn Zelda game and this was by far the worst Zelda experience.

An open world map that makes you explore to find traditional Zelda items and then you have to find the proper dungeon and solve the puzzles. I don’t mind having a few shrines or Korok seeds, but that seriously just feels like filler. Then at the end of each dungeon you can collect a part of whatever you need to progress in the story. I can’t stand enough how much fun the original style of dungeons are to me.

The randomizer basically fixes the issues with exploration. Since you always want to find every item since it could always be something new and useful.

Part of the challenge managing the camera with bosses like dancing lion is knowing when to take the lock off. Most spells and attacks can still be manually aimed by controlling your camera and looking at your target.

At about ten minutes, I feel like if you didn't "get" the shaman village that's on you, it's probably more obvious what went on there in the story than any other part of the DLC. I haven't met many people who didn't understand that part. I don't really care about the direction the story went in there but it was anything but obtuse at that particular point.

I haven't played the sequel yet (there's a chance my analysis will be wrong) , I only briefly played the original (I personally found it quite boring and baren, and also cause the shrines just aren't fun for me). I do hope the next ZELDA will be more of a halfway point but the success of tears of the kingdom most likely it will not. I just don't have the time as an adult (nor do I have the temperament) to spend 120 hours on a game anymore. Chrono Trigger (my all time favourite RPG - with side quests it is no more than 30 hour +) is a masterpiece (for the most part) because it was laser focused on what it did. IE, every SIDEQUEST led to a character conclusion and even the previous ZELDA's (link to the past) while somewhat linear, was also focused enough to not lose sight of the main quest (IE you collect all the pendants, rescue the princess and the MAP is focused on that one aspect). I think everybody wants a feeling of vastness is their games its what makes RPG's feel epic, but I believe you can give that feeling without losing focus (look at dark souls design, hell look at monster boys design even).

The scadutree system could be interesting to implement as a standard for the full game, but how would that work? You already level up your stats to make your build, adding Scadutrees onto the mix what purpose would it serve? Boost your stats even more? That seems pointless to me. It could be a good idea in a game without build variety. Also in the dlc scadutree were implemented horribly, they are just an excuse to make the bosses extremely stat buffed until you get some scadutree and even the playing field

First person shooters being a thing since The 90's: ok. Souls with 6 games since 2009: The formula is over, Fromsoftware needs to change, this is unbearable. I know The criticism and i'm aware of it, but is funny how much The internet gets tired of some genres while other are not that criticised.

It's due to the fact that everyone knows that FPS play the same, many people I have seen are gravitating away from FPS games and the FPS franchises that exist are *somewhat* innovating as they continue, but action games are held to a higher standard because there is infinitely more potential to tap into than an FPS game. Even among the most popular FPS games, like Overwatch and Fortnite, are detached from the standard FPS experience that it feels new and fresh enough to not warrant the complaint that all FPS games play the same, because they don't. The DMC games are a perfect example, each game in the franchise is a stark upgrade from the previous entry and while there are gameplay similarities, none of the games feel like they play the exact same to warrant this kind of reaction. Monster Hunter also follows this idea of adding to or upgrading the game with each major installment, why can't the Souls series do the same?

Dlc's optional areas felt under developed. Elden rings world is still the best in souls but that is probably because i kill 99% of enemies at least once instead of skip everything. No grinding because i can explore something else and i love the exploration. Elden ring and sekiro are my fav fromsoft games that i've played.

Agreed. So many features that made no fucking sense. And so so so many many missed opportunities and decisions that broke the strengths from the first game. Loved the ambiance of the biomes in Subzero, i explored for my own interest not the plot...and..otherwise, lived.the nostalgia it brought up for the original Subnautica.

Was a Myst player...wandered away from videogames for decades. I came back to video games because of tales of SubNautica and Outerwilds. I hope hope its a genre...but as I found both to be creative products with amazing lighthand at purposeful creative writing that added emotion and clues, explorations of landscapes and artefacts, knowledge gathering and investment, I worry that subsequent games in the "genre" will copy features, lose or misuse essential components. I can hope that some will be artworks...but fear a generation of pale copies and misses and false promise. Appreciate your analyses! Helps me see more features that captured me....but makes me worry more that there are not multiple ways to produce such satisfaction. Among other things. Are such moments of creation, when from years of work across so many people at a developing company, more serendipity than plan? B

I mean it doesn’t cost a lot to experiment with weapons if your further on in game as you can just buy the mats needed. I think the open world at times was great, then on the other hand there was some spots that were desolate af. To defend the open world aspect tho is if yku hit a wall, you can go away and do something else and plenty of places to explore. I love the new bosses and learning their attack patterns same with some of the new enemies as well. I think on the combat is we had a simple dash it would go a long way, especially for certain enemies that phase off to the other side of the arena 🤣 (Elden beast, astel) well made video, I’ll give you that!

The combo extension of these bosses would have been great if.....you could cancel your animations. Then, you could respond on the fly if the combo was longer than expected, rather than just eating damage because you couldn't predict what would happen. Sekiro works so well because you CAN cancel into a block (at least early into the attack), and your attacks in general are much faster, so you are never committed for long.

Even better about that canonising death point is that Hearthian culture is just going out and doing things, consequences be damned, they talk about destructive events like it’s just another tuesday and seem to care more about cutting down some random tree that’s in the way a little compared to the possibility of your ship burning down the launch pad, so OF COURSE the player character, the hatchling, would just go out and do crazy stuff if they were in a time loop, that’s what Hearthians do! That’s why Feldspar is so legendary for his daringness, that’s why your ship is shoddily made out of wood parts duct taped together until it decides to work Really, the one thing that would be out of character in Outer Wilds would be playing it safe, trying to not die

If you haven't played the past FS games then your not going to get it. ER was more about bending the knee to gain more players rather than sticking w/ their roots of what made them great to begin with. Even if you go back and play the older games you're most likely still not going to get it bc your outlook is going to be that ER is a better game and technically it is but the game as a whole it isn't. All the older FS games w/ the exception of Sekrio have replay-ability and ER doesn't. You will discover that in a few years when you have no desire to replay ER. To this day I still enjoy going back and replaying their older titles bc they are that good.

All these years later and i’m still learning new things about this game You just taught me that there’s actually 2 trails to the southern pole on Brittle Hollow, the other route has a cool puzzle where you need to get around some ghost matter by leaping off the wall and onto an upright platform then leap back onto the wall on the other side of the ghost matter That leap you showed isn’t on that path

I absolutely love the combat and would gladly play it infinitely. I do prefer the more linear curated parts but the choice of going practically anywhere is a lot of fun to me. Witcher 3 is hands down the LEAST immersive game I’ve ever played. It’s basically a reskinned Ubisoft slop game. If we're talking about the games boss fights, I agree, we're about at the breaking point. However, this formula has plenty of life left to explore a title that returns to the idea that the games difficulty is 50/50 between combat and exploration. Could you imagine a game world designed with the same idea as OG Dark Souls with traversal mechanics that aren't terrible? Exhibit A: Another Crab's Treasure

Personally I'd argue that the better comparison to Outer Wilds is not Myst but Riven. Myst tries to convey a world, but it feels more like a puzzlebox. In Riven, you have a whole world, there's social dynamics in the background, there's Ghen's experimenting with recreating the ability to write Ages, there's cultural icons and so on. (One major difference, though, and I'm told it's a very deliberate choice, is that Outer Wilds avoids having stuff that exists purely for lore reasons. There's a reason my Outer Wilds notebook is pretty focused on stuff that's relevant to the game's big mysteries, while my Riven notebook from way back has several pages that are just sketches and notes on the Rivenese people and their artwork that just...has no bearing on the actual game, and are just meant to make them feel real.)

I'm not as big an open world hater and, as much as I'd prefer a reactive open world where your actions have systemic effects, I don't mind a glorified menu screen between objectives so long as it's enjoyable to navigate, and that's 2077's cardinal sin IMO. The minimap is the only way to find your way anywhere because the in-world signposting is almost nonexistant and the roads aren't laid out with any discernable logic. Hell, even using the minimap I get lost at least once per journey because I take one turn too early and end up on the road above the one I'm aiming for. So many weirdly-hidden entrances to buildings mean that you can't even walk to most locations without a line leading the way, which is a shame because the on foot traversal mechanics are pretty solid, I got lost one time and had to parkour my way down off a fairly tall building and it was the most engaging the world itself ever felt. One of the best mods I've installed for Cyberpunk adds working trains. They're a little janky but being able to sit in first person and look out the window at the city as you travel is a better way to experience the open world than bouncing my bike off 3 walls, doing a wheelie and then akira sliding backwards into oncoming traffic. Honestly an open world that had to be navigated through a mix of parkour and public transit would be so much more engaging than the Sprawling Mess of Streets to Crash Your Car To that we got.

Dark Souls III was the definitive finale to Souls, and it was the perfect send-off. I'm not sure why they then decided to turn around and use the same formula again but worse in literally every way. Personally, I felt underwhelmed by Sekiro, and then pretty much hated Elden Ring to this day. The DLC only made my distaste for this game swell up further. However, I had a very good time with Armored Core VI. I'm not giving up on FromSoft just yet, but I want them to ditch the Souls formula or at least give it a good 10 year hiatus. I would love more Souls games if they were similar to Dark Souls 1-3 or even Bloodborne, in terms of level design, music, boss fights, lore, atmosphere and just overall quality... but I lost hope and confidence that From could ever pull off a game like it ever again. if they focus more on Armored Core again and put FreQuency back in the limelight, things could go up however.

You’re asking for quality of life mechanics that would essentially make Elden ring into Lords of the Fallen. If you are looking for that experience just play that game or another souls like not made by FS. The quirks and unusual gameplay mechanics/world design are what draws fans to the games. If it ain’t broke to their fan base, why change it?

This criticism is absurd. Elden Ring is a master piece, period. And the reasoning behind this statement is that it give you the chance to pick up the difficulty level, not like other games like God of War, but instead giving you the amount of tools (NPC summons, Spirit Ashes, Online Summons, Scadutree Fragments, etc.). I am a patient of Osteogénesis Imperfecta, type 3, so my hands and not strong or fast enough to solo this game (actually this is the first souls game I can enjoy) because I don't have the physical body to "git gud". I got Platinum on PS5 using summons and all the other stuff. You can not blame From Software for designing a game for everyone. I mean you can still do it without summons and with no armor and all you want but please don't blame the company for trying to be more inclusive at the same time. Don't get me wrong this game is difficult enough. The open world exploration is the best part about this game. Not everyone likes a linear game. I got the six endings in totally different runs with different boss orders. In the DLC I did the first run with no quest, and online summons. My second run was with NPC Summons and Spirit Ashes but not online help. That is me trying to do it more difficult and I felt really happy when I beat Radahn this way. You need to understand that not everyone can be as good a you guys playing video games and there are a million of reasons for that. Me for example, I am a disabled person, but other people doesn't have the time for it. I also disagree with what has been said in this video about the LORE because I found very entertaining watching videos like Vaati, Jake AGT and other channels speculating about the LORE and that is a part of this game that is very refreshing. The only bosses I haven't been able to beat by myself (using my mimic tear) are Maliketh, Radagon and Malenia. All the other ones I was able to beat by myself including Promised Consort with the Fingerprint Shield, and you know what? I feel happy and accomplished. You can still do your runs with no armor and challenge runs but that is not for everyone.
