To be honest, Outlaws of Thunder Junction feels like a competent Western story shoehorned into a fantasy multiverse. It doesn't help does the magic here feels more Harry Potter than MTG.

@@BensonMTG Maybe he wants to know how he is still active, to know if there's a chance he'll turn back into a Phyrexian, to know if he's secretly spreading oil and preparing a third Phyrexian invasion, and other questions. Maybe Jace implanted in him a wish to seek him out to distract him from his Izzet guildmaster duties, or a plan of Jace depends on Ral coming to him at some point. Maybe it's just a lame excuse to feature a UR planeswalker in the set.

A coherent story, protagonists with character, an antagonist with a clear and valid agenda, what's going on here? Did they actually hire a decently competent writer this time? (Only thing I don't understand is what the 4-winged-eagle-dragon is doing there.)

Story was good and not unnecessarily convoluted, compared to the last year plus from MtG. No contrived plot twist, only one mcguffin in the egg. However, the overall arc of the narrative didn't really advance. Ral went on a furry adventure, but so what? All so Helga could have a relatively brief vision about kings and "the end?" Okay...? That's it? And it was great to get a break from Kellan, but is he just done? Kellans hunt for Oko was kinda cliché, but the abrupt Jace switcheroo is pretty jarring. Idk man, world building seems improved with these next two sets, BB and DM, but I am not sure that story coherence seems all that much better.

If they don't make a d&d tie in with this set it'll be absolutely criminal. Considering they're releasing updated versions of d&d over the next 6 months we likely won't be getting bloomburrow.

Well even if they don't we'll always have Humblewood. Honest to god this set reminded me of it so much. Wouldn't surprise me if it was a major source of inspiration.

@@horrorfan117 could be. I mean we've got enough pieces to make it work even without them officially doing it. Just have everyone pick an animal race. There's like 3 different bird races, rabbit, turtle, frog, fish, cat, lizard, snake, dragon, and a sort of flying monkey. Just modify some visuals. Maybe make a few flavor changes like have owlen or aarakocra with a bat variant. Could probably just say something like Goliath or orc is like a badger or whatever.

When I heard about magic coming from behind the king I thought he was being possesed or had been killed and reanimated as a puppet, that would had been more interesting that the formulaic "Arrogant king whose hubris puts the world in danger". At the end enjoyable but really predictable in their tropes. 6/10 Ral's reaction to his change carried the story.

The story seemed rushed and not very interesting I get there are story spotlight cards which is stupid to begin with but you get 2 mediocre fights and a ending that a 5 year old could done a better job at.
