I recall you from years ago when I was in this field. Many sub 500 Buck models make just 10- 20% of their claimed output.VAWT comes around every couple of years. They look great visually but are inherently way worse than any HAWT.

you need to make a power controller for the rota that turns power off till it spins then by time turns up the charge current to the rota . the energizing current will put magnet load on the unit making it hard to turn . so you need a set of transistors from a battery that will regulate the rota supply . This will help immensely if you use a car alternator ..The thing is to build the system on the floor with a thick metal frame so the horse power can be gained by using a large surface area such as a split 45 gallon barrel split into as the blades . speed will be less but tork would be far higher . ... So just build one for the ground and add all the energy together ..

So modern home wind generators actually produce enough power to make them financially viable? I've read that for the large commercial windmills, the manufacturing/setup costs, combined with maintenance/parts replacement costs are greater than the value of power generated over the lifetime of the windmill. Government subsidies are needed to make them profitable. If the smaller home system is a net positive regarding costs, what is the approximate net profit over the lifetime of the generator? If the generator system costs $5,000 over it's lifetime, but produces only $5,100 worth of electricity, it probably wouldn't be worth the effort. Have you been using wind generators long enough to show that they are a worthwhile investment?

Yes it has been profitable for me, but I'm off grid and cost is measured differently for me as opposed to someone grid tie ing and selling the power back

I have an off grid shed I need to heat. Only need to keep it at 40 degrees. I was thinking an aluminum can thermal panel w solar fan. And a backup propane heater if needed. I can’t run power so need an off grid option that isn’t expensive.

The aluminum can passive solar collectors are really efficient. A friend of mine made one and it works great. Only comes into play when the sun shines though

@@veggitarianredneck I really appreciate your response. I have now acquired 2 fans. solar panel, battery and charge controller. and I have metal roofing to create a passive solar panel. Of course it is easy to get aluminum cans too. Just trying to figure out which style will provide the most heat for a small shed that only needs to maintain heat at 45 to 50 degrees. It is cold storage for fig trees. the space is fully insulated. 10 by 20 shed. The whole back of the shed is south facing. so perfect to mount the system.

I have been researching and following wind turbines since 2000. I agree with what you are saying about cheap wind turbines, but I believe you are leaving out several great implementations of VAWTs. You mentioned laminar air flow - a VAWT doesn't care about the direction of the wind hitting it. When you switch to HAWTs, you have to put some king of airfoil rudder on the back to keep it aimed into the wind. The key parts of a turbine are the rotor design and the electric generator connected to it. These need to be made of quality, durable parts with efficiency and strength for the blades, low friction, a stable drivetrain axle, and strong mount for the generator. I didn't hear you mention the Dutch manufacturer of Tulip turbines or the U.S. manufacturer Flower Turbines. These VAWTs do not risk hitting birds, they have more blade surface area proportional to their size compared with the size of the 3-blade HAWTs on towers. Additionally, the higher efficiency of VAWTs compared to turbines of a similar class allows them to produce electricity at lower wind speeds, and the "clustering effect " when installing them close together actually improves their efficiency.

Forget getting a vawt. They only produce 25% power compared to hawt. There is not that much wind at low altitudes.

or build a plane from old bike frames . or timber ..two by four frame or ...some way simpler construction just crude wood and plyplates as wings , in a strong simple way l guess not glue then ,maybe just test strenght of timbers by weight test in middle see if cracks , .. would it work for a few flies at least , fun vid for youtube safer to remote control with man weight sandbag in seat. or old plane wings on old car drive till lifts no propeller.h

Interested in wind generator but also considering something for well pump either generator or one thst uses wind to manually pump ... but issues would be winter us when its needed. On grid for electricity but want to be more off grid and lose power 3 weeks a year or more

I am not doubting you, but if you have no experience with vertical wind generation, you did not mention any experience, how you discount them all? I was looking for talk about that, you started the video off with that, but you don't say why they are bad, ect. Not the most helpful :(

Nice project. Don’t forget to install a ground to the heater and to your disconnect ( metal box). If they were to become energized ( shorted) somehow your fuses wouldn’t trip because the current isn’t going anywhere, it will just put voltage on the metal parts. Your gas pipe should also be grounded already, so a short wire down to the gas pipe will do the trick. I don’t have much experience with solar but I am an electrician, and grounding metal parts in almost all scenarios is crucial.

From all my friends in the wind industry: If it is vertical axis it is junk, and nothing more than kinetic art. Second, don't do wind unless your average ANNUAL windspeed is MEASURED and is in excess of 12 mph. Third, only use tried and proven horizontal access wind machines which are a minimum of 30 feet taller than anything within a radius of 300 feet. The taller the tower the greater the power.

A VAWT is actually good at the laminar flow, but, that particular model is also a badly designed blade. Not poorly designed, badly. It was done intentionally.

1.5kWh solar panels on roof of my RV produce 4-7kWh daily. Flat-mounted, six, 250watt panels. I have a 9.3kWh solar panel solution on my home roof. On average, it produces 30-50kWh per DAY. It was not cheap but I qualified for the tax credit (30% toward the system price). Turbines for home solar just don't make sense in urban setting unless they are on a leading edge of a commercial roof.

Very great work. Errors come from best projects, it is normal. Truss is much more expensive, but it is the better solution. In these videos, I don't see any electrical grounding.

I know this is old, but the general appeal is 24/7 operational ability over solar. I live in a pretty windy area so the thought of one of these with a smaller battery seemed like a neat way to learn about renewables. However as I get into this rabbit hole I'm learning wind is a terrible way to go from a maintenance perspective, let alone the all the issues you just touched on!

hey, first time viewer of your channel. i worked with earthship for years and built many including my own house. i teach physics and math. just curious...you live in montana? is wind power for you just a novelty or is it needed where you are? seems like montana would be totally solar if you have enough panels (super cheap now) and a good battery bank. is winter the time for wind there?

Solar currently is still the best option, like you mentioned it's very cheap. I don't know if I would say that wind power here is novelty but the site for one and the model of wind turbine must both be carefully considered

I have much wind here in the desert, lots of wind daily, I purchased a Chinese wind generator 1st time, 1600 watt , my solar 100 watt from harbor freight works much better, back to another 100 watt solar system for the moment, am looking into a better wind generator, with high wind I get very little from this 1600 watt generator!

Buy a Exercise Bicycle, attach a DC MOTOR to it, with required circuit/device to store in Battery (used in solar projects) . Cycle daily for 1 hr each of family members. Voila, U got power for day😊

I may not like the product, but I really liked the review format. Very informative and gets straight to the point. I'd recommend getting something in the 1-2kWh range for off-grid tool charging. These models can often be charged at 500-1,000 watts solar or 800-1600 watts AC so you can minimize the time you need to run a generator to top it off. The higher watt capacity also means you can use larger corded tools without the generator too. The most budget-friendly solar generators I've seen are Pecron and Oupes. EcoFlow is the market leader with the feature set and price to match. Given how hard i think you will run it though, the extra $ for 2 years more of warranty with the EF may be worth it for you.

The built-in solar seems like a gimic. Other 600Wh solar generators cost in the $200 range and roughly $300 if you get a 100W panel with it. This one is coser to $500 and takes up over double the footprint. Most alarmingly... the product page says this ia a 4-stroke engine with a 5-gallon capacity... this alone is enough for me to stear clear. 25w car charging is 1/4th of what I've come to expect from Oupes, Jackery, and Ecoflow.

Yeah... a 40v 4ah battery is 160wh. Assuming 80% efficiency from the AC inverter, and an additional 80% efficiency from the battery charger, and you'll be nearly out of juice after charging 2 batteries (160/.8/.8=250). Considering 4ah 40v batteries only cost $150 each and this thing is over $500... the value justification just isn't there. I'm very curious what a, one month later, review for this product would look like. Especially if other power stations are also given a look at.

tower has to be built, erected, and rigged properly. consider disc area and leverage... a LOT of force. 2 blades suck. need relatively high speeds to operate, and they produce oddball harmonics on the tower for some reason. always aim for odd numbers? electrical side of things... best use for wind imho, is to heat water. dont worry about batteries, you can heat water far more efficiently, and hot water is pretty nice? you can then forget about things like volts x amps... think of power transfer instead. matching things. rip the regulator out, and the power delivered to a load will be based on the resistance of the load, and the excitation or field voltage/current. a resistance equal to the alternator windings will dissipate an equal amount of power as the alternator. if its twice the resistance, 4x. if its half the resistance, 4x the power is dissipated in the generator instead, not in the load. if the resistance is too high though, the generator cannot push current THROUGH the load, and no work is done. the alternator "freespins". "open circuit"... that is, the alternator windings are a resistance themselves and consume power. too low a resistance and you heat the alternator instead, and burn it out... too high, you dont have current flow. its this thing called "jacobs law". so, you have an un-excited alternator, no cogging. easy to spin. and as you excite them, they start "braking" due to lenz law. the more load, the lower the resistance, the more they "brake". with a water heater element, you basically have a fixed resistance. theyre listed in "watts" but that changes if you run them at different voltages. ohms law. you need the volts across the resistance to push so many amps through that resistance... run a 240V at 12v, it barely gets warm. run a 12v at 48 and its running at 16X its rated power, lol... what stops it burning out is surface area and how fast it can dissipate that heat to the surrounds. you can have the same element as say, the arc of a welder, focused and intense, or spread that resistance out over 50M of wire supported on poles and only get a very small rise in temperature. same power, different area and rate of transfer... but with an alternator, you can control the field excitation, and the power the alternator can deliver... you just need to deliver a voltage appropriate to the windspeed and the output power... dig apart a motor with a centrifugal starter... look at it for a while, consider how you could make a small generator/governor/exciter from it... some pickup coils, some magnets, a different tension spring... you want something that when its spinning slowly, the magnets are pulled away from the coils. no output... as it speeds up, the magnets get closer to the coils, you get power, that excites the field windings, the alternator starts producing power, dumping it into a resistance that happens to be a resistive heater element in your hot water tank... wind blows harder, magnets fling out more, more power absorbed from wind by alternator, more power dumped into heater. with some tuning of this governor you get reasonably controlled blade speed regardless of windspeed... when they spin faster, the braking forces of the alternator increase, and slow it down... but as the excitation decreases, it speeds up... get it right and the braking effort at high speeds can overcome the power applied to the blades by the wind, and it limits the max RPM. you might boil some water, but so what? means you need more water storage! to charge batteries? it involves needing precise voltages, dumps, calculations... you have to try and push energy into something that isnt really happy about it... its related to internal resistances, and that jacobs law thing. that batteries are NOT resistors... lot of power used everyday in the average home, just heating water...
