@matthewanderson7766 Yeah, I know. I just installed this trans and wanted to see how the open diff would perform. I've always had a locked diff until now. I'm definitely going to lock it. I have a video from a few months ago ripping it around the yard with the locked diff in the MST206. It's a sideways drift machine. It's awesome.

Direction of pull on the band opposite of travel might work better. I'd try having the top fixed and pull upwards from the bottom side of the band.

i had band brakes on an old go kart i had im pretty positive it was only connected on the one side like you have it. i dont think it had a y piece to bolt in each side. mine was controlled by foot brake maybe thats why i could get mine to lock up. just throwing ideas out there get rid of the flex redesign your mounting bracket im thinking the reason their not locking up is because when your applying alot of force its just flexing that bracket rather then applying force to the brake system
@DieselFuelNetwork
@DieselFuelNetwork Күн бұрын
@andrewstevenson5155 Yeah, after looking at it again, I definitely agree. The flex is probably what's killing it. I'm going to totally redo the mount and see how that works. I also used to have go-kart with this setup, and it worked well. Although it was cable operated from the center of the band. Typically, they are cable operated. I do think having a Y link would help, but you're definitely right about the flex.

There is manual disc brakes as well. That's what I do instead of strap brakes like that. Those never really grab well to me. But yeah your right on pulling both at the same time and I've always seen them done by cable. Also think about making a foot pedal. It's so much better when you have both hands to steer oh and weld the diff up... it'll be alot more fun
@DieselFuelNetwork
@DieselFuelNetwork Күн бұрын
@RollinMyOwn 🤔 Oh yeah, the go-kart frame I've been getting parts from had a mechanical disc brake. I know these are usually actuated by cable, but I wanted to have solid linkage. I may consider trying a foot pedal, although there is not much room for it. Also, the lever operated setup is inspired by the sports cars of the 20s and 30s like the Bugatti type 35. The MST206 transaxle I had before this Spicer had a welded diff. It was definitely a lot more fun. This is actually the first time I've ever had an open diff. I wanted to see how it would feel, particularly on the road, but it definitely ruins the sideways action on loose terrain. I'll be welding it for sure. I'm still gonna try to get these brakes working better. If that fails, maybe I'll try the mechanical disc setup.

@DieselFuelNetwork
@DieselFuelNetwork Күн бұрын
@@malcolmg405 I think that could work well. I still think the potential is there with these brakes. It seems that the orientation of the band and the linkage or cable is more critical than I thought. Typically they are cable operated. I'm definitely gonna make some changes and see if I can make it work. Good luck with your setup. Thanks for watching.

That has been suggested before. I used to ride a motorcycle every day for about 5 years, and I would never even think about riding without a helmet. This is not a motorcycle or a quad or a go-kart. To me, it's a car. Driving an old T-bucket or Model-A roadster hot-rod is just as dangerous. This doesn't mean it's out of the question, though. Yeah, that was always something that annoyed me about the MST. The MST I had before the one I have now, I actually chipped 5th gear, so I put 6th in its place and just added a spacer to make it a 5 speed. This eliminated that issue. But I like this Spicer a lot more. It has perfect spacing in every gear. We'll just have to see how it holds up to abuse.

Hahaha, yeah, I never give it a second thought. I used to run rear 3/4 keyed bore mower wheels on the front. Just grease with metal on metal. I actually put probably 50 or more miles on that setup with routine sustained 40mph for 3 mile drives. However, I never pulled actual cornering Gs with that setup. I'll definitely be doing trailer idler hubs eventually. I also want to add some caster to the front axle. It does drive very well for how it's set up, but caster should improve the high speed stability tremendously.

This machine is dangerous with or without brakes. It should be obvious that it slows down quickly with engine braking and shifting down. I've been doing this long enough to know the limitations of the machine and have never in over 15 years had to use the brakes when driving one on the road. Pulling it down a couple of gears will literally lock the tires. No one said it was cool not to have them. And btw, do you know how youtube works ?

Yes, and when spinning the input shaft on these mower transaxles with open diff to check the ratio, typically only one axle spins, therefore only taking half the amount of turns of the input shaft. When I first checked the ratios, every gear worked out to exactly half what it was. So I initially thought I had a 6.1:1 6th gear, but it is 12.2:1. The same is true of an open diff on anything. If you spin the pinion gear with both sides unloaded, it will be half.
