Thank you. I am definitely very proud to own this car. Thanks for the tip on the timing. It has a stock balancer with only a TDC mark. I'm going to have to calculate and mark it to read total timing. Or get timing tape to put on it. As always, thanks for watching, I appreciate it

Agreed about the timing. You get that "lopey" sound when she's lacking advance... I also think you should make sure those accelerator pumps start squirting with any carb movement at all- and maybe fatten 'er up just a smidge. Sounds great!
@DieselFuelNetwork
@DieselFuelNetwork Ай бұрын
Thank you. Yeah, I have to mark the balancer so I can verify and adjust the total timing. It only has a mark for TDC, and the pointer goes to 16°, so I was only able to see base timing. It looks like the accelerator pumps are moving right when I touch the throttle, but I haven't looked inside the carbs and confirmed they are fully squirting right away. I will definitely check that out, thanks.

Just found you and subscribed. Your dad would be proud!! Love the old school tunnel ram and carbs! I would build the same. I would play with the setup you have. Get mufflers and maybe close in the floor. Make separation from trunk area. Make street legal and go from there. Love it!!

It's quite common for those power valves to fail ,,, causing idle to be too rich , and under load to be too lean ....Replace the power valves and then re-jet the carbs ....

Most cars that run tunnel rams use and are set up with 600 vacuum secondaries that's not unusual the jets will be more tunable if you put a left and right bung into the exhaust after the collectors install oxygen sensors and a gauge so you can get your fuel air ratio correct when driving it under load once you can get on the road , road worthy. Get timing light on it so you can see if it's making full in timing of around 33°, 34° at 2800 -3000 rpm. Also your running your carbs of over 240 jets when you combine the primaries. Like on my big block I run 144 total on just the primaries. So you are real rich but those tunnels demand it especially like that high RPM they want to live up there but you have to Rev them a lot to keep them from pooling fuel they don't like low RPM on street if there not cleared out they have a tendency to fuel bog, cut out, hesitate from fouling.

27:02 That’s a metering plate. Holley got cheap, so instead of using a metering block they used a plate. The front only has main jets. Holley doesn’t have pilot jets whatever they are. I’m e never heard that name before. Use a scuare robertson screwdriver to remove the rear metering plate if the gaskets need replacing. There are different size robertson bit heads, so it’s best to just get a screwdriver that has all the bits included with the magnetic tip. Buy the blue Holley gaskets, they can be reused and do not stick like the cork gaskets from yesteryear. Also check the body of the carb where the metering block mounts for warping with a straight edge. And the base plate and the bottom of the body. I spent 5 hrs filing my 780 Holley that was leaking internally. Now the engine runs great. Once you start filing you will see the low spots.
@DieselFuelNetwork
@DieselFuelNetwork Ай бұрын
Thanks for the info. I knew these carbs only had one metering block, but I wasn't familiar with the metering plate on the other side. I had never had any type of Holley carb apart before. "Pilot jet" is a term for low speed jets that im used to seeing on motorcycle and lawn mower carburetors. On those carbs the "pilot jets" are responsible for low load transitional throttle inputs and are much smaller than the main jets. For example, on my 2-barrel mower carb larger pilot jets improved off idle throttle response and part throttle performance, while larger mains had more effect on the full load full throttle fueling.

I dont think its fuel .. its enough timing.. not advancing like jt should have... way more tuning it needs.. also a linear pull on the throttle inkage iss better that it being pulled back and down. Sound stupid good.. but take your timing at at about 2500 and put it to around 30 itll be a whole new level... been thee with that almost same build
@DieselFuelNetwork
@DieselFuelNetwork Ай бұрын
Thanks for the advice. I have to mark the balancer to check total timing, it only has a TDC mark, so I was only able to verify base timing. It also needs some carb tuning as well. It smells very rich at idle. I know there are some very specific tuning requirements to get a tunnel ram setup to work well. I also realized as you saw in the video I barely got past 2500rpm, which is nothing, so I can't really judge it just yet.

In my younger years I built many cars. Unfortunatly that stopped when I married my ex wife now. I allowed her to control my time and my money. Anyways I never used a timing light. For some reason I was able to time cars better by ear then I could with a timing light. Back in the 1990's my ex had a 1978 Ford Granada 2 door with a 351 Windsor V8 engine. I drove that car a couple times and I asked my ex who worked on this car. Well she had a well known shop doing all her work. For a 351 Windsor it had no power and really hard on fuel. Well I timed that car by ear. All of a sudden that car woke up, had all sorts of power and was getting close to 35 mpg on the highway. My ex was completely shocked at how it ran just with me timing it by ear. If you build or work on enough vehicles I guess you can hear how it runs and make corrections from there.Whether it is timing or making carb corrections.

I timed my 72 Impala by ear too. It was a 454, ran 9.50 in the quarter and got 75 MPG at 140 MPH on the highway.
