21st century and people are still using languages to show that they are different, that their language is more important, that they are a different “group”, rather than using languages as bridges of communication... sad

IN his book, "The Path to Rome," Hillaire Belloc was delighted by the continuity of the language he encountered, from central France, across the Alps and down to Rome. I used to live in Monza, Italy, and I was surprised to hear the local dialect sounding so much like French. I wonder if Occitan could be classified as something like a modern Middle Latin.

the language that is now called Italian is actually the Florentine language. Obviously what these people speak is an evolution of "vulgar Latin" or "sermo vulgaris2 (not classical Latin).

Sounds quite similar to Catalan. With elements of Italian (as well as Spanish and French of course) that also feature strongly in Catalan. Written Italian, French and Catalan are very similar indeed (ie the grammar and some vocabulary). You don’t find any of the Arabic words that you have in Spanish in the other 4 languages - which all call an olive an olive!

It depends some words could be "guessed out" via their etymological Roots but it is not an absolute rule when we Know that Occitania is so large that dialects of that région were influenced by differents languages (Gascon : spagnole/catalan, Provençal : Italien). Im from the S.W of France and some words in the dialect that was spoken in my région share some similarities with words of a lot of the other Occitan dialects.

Hello there, Upon hearing the language I reckon it's a fusion of French and Spanish. That's all I can say for it, oh but if I may ask, does anyone here have ideas on how to obtain study materials for this language? I'd like to learn it. I know it isn't French and maybe viewed impractical to do by some people but anyway I raise my hand to learn how to speak it either almost or completely like a native (I'm a Filipino, I speak both Cebuano and Tagalog to which both have lots of Spanish loanwords so there's a bit of an advantage for me already, not that I brag about it), because my tongue is hungry for languages so I'm going to throw in Occitan, if anyone here can suggest any sources like a book with an audio CD or an organization that promotes the language perhaps? Thank you and God bless you all.

As I understood, Catalan comes from Old Occitan but this language now considered a chronolect, an ancestral form of Occitan and Catalan so they should be the 2 dialects of Old Occitan but since it doesn't exist anymore, Occitan and Catalan are sister languages, daughter language of Old Occitan.

It sounds like Spanish and French with a kind of Celtic Irish-esque accent to me. Some of them roll their r's as in the Spanish language. The first guy featured looks like Guillaume Canet to me. It's interesting because I hope this doesn't offend anyone but there is a typical French look that I recognize. Of course not everyone has it, but there's just something I recognize especially in the men. I realized that everyone has a different individual accent, just because they're from the same place, they can speak in a different way. Same as where I"m at in the U.S.
