Thanks Craig. I have a new to me 2005 model and it did this on a ride. Somehow the light came back on and got back home. I now need to open it. How do you know if its still repairable or is it just a replace?

It's just not worth trying to mend if I can remember it's a circuit board thing that moves around, easier to buy new and ten minutes to fix

Does it need re jigging in the ECU after you fit a new one?

sorry cant remember that far back but bought it from ebay for £35.00 i think there was only two different ones and i just got the one for that year, try a bmw specialist store online like motobins.co.uk they will definetly sort the right bit. Hope this helps you out.

That's the problem,it'll be sorted with the new part, just lie on your back with a 10mm,or 8mm cant remember unplug the wire going to it first ,it's a fiddly job but undo both bolts slide the switch back away from the gearbox look at the shape of the rod coming out and and ease the new switchback on its sounds harder than it is and takes 5minutes to do,I remember it showed me the wrong gear on my dash I went through all the gears turned it off back on left it a minute to sort out what it does and everything was spot on .Good luck and don't worry all the best CRAIG

craig dilworth cheers Craig. Had an ignition unit fail on a 800 gs. Couldn't turn it off! Had to leave it with the lights on, took the pilot bulb out but the led back light drained the battery during the day so finished work and had a useless bike. That was a crappy little microswitch

highdownmartin my front brake micro switch was dodgy as well bought a new one because the brake light keep coming on and draining the battery and it wasn't that it was the two wires coming off it towards a steering column had snapped and I had to solder them which fixed the problem.

craig dilworth worth remembering. Wires are too thin, I was shocked when I changed a heated grip and found the wires and connector more suitable for a battery connection on a sixties portable tranny. These are2A load! Micky mouse in my opinion, but I like old school electrics, feed, switch bulb earth. No bloody canbus bollocks Safe riding. M
