Rex Allen was a great narrator, and his voice was used in a lot of Disney films. My dad worked in advertising and I mentioned this to him. He said they used Rex Allen an a lot of commercials. Dad said it was so sad when Rex Allen died, but thankfully, his son had the exact same voice.

It wasn't a "log" flume. It was a lumber flume. No log ever rode down it. Big difference between a log and lumber.

The best part of this isn’t even the storyline of a cougar riding a log flume. The best part is that there were people out there who thought to themselves, “let’s get a cougar. Ok even better, let’s get a cougar on the world’s fastest and longest log flume- and video tape it.”

Filmed in 1967, it had to be actually filmed - not video taped.

Thank you so much for this!! Wish they could have turned it into a ride as someone proposed. I have some of the wood from the flume milled into deck railing. It's a bit rough in places, but I prize it for the history.

Does anyone remember a scene in this movie that was shown on Wonderful World of Disney, but cut from the DVD release, where it shows how Charlie got his name? Jess was trying to do paperwork, Charlie kept messing it up, and Jess said to him, "You're a regular good time charlie, aren't you?" and that's how it stuck? Either that, or I'm remembering something that I never actually saw...

They made that flume boat just for this film, and after that the kids wanted to ride it so bad. A few actually got to, and in the Gorge Heritage Musuem in Bingen we have a couple pics of the filming process and the crowd watching. We also have a little card saying "This certifies that ____ has ridden the flume and is a member in good standing of FLUMERS UNITED "In Trestles we Trust" ~ Hal Broughton, President." It was card number 109. Can you imagine what OSHA would say in this day and age? LOL... We also have a photo of Charlie the Cougar on the flume. Pretty cool stuff!

Because even though cougars are basically giant house cats, they are wild and dangerous animals that could decide to kill anyone if the mood takes them no matter how much training they've had. Also many animals have died at the hands of the movie industry.

Sharon It was filmed the sumer of of 66 and aired the spring of 67. I had just graduated from the 8th grade at the Mill-A grade school and a few weeks latter the movie production came to the Willard mill. It was really something to watch it being filmed. When it was aried though and all the clips put togeather it didn't resemble the actual place or the Broughton Lumber Company.

So the titles say 1967, but the copyright on the film actually says 1974. Anyone know exactly when this filmed and aired? I do remember it was a big deal, but don't remember the exact year.

@@williamdawkins1724 all the loggers I knew (including my father) were still wearing them in the late 1980’s, we all lived in Hood River, OR at the time. My uncle was killed in ‘75 in WA state while wearing one, it was kinda smashed up. I remember my grandfather still had it for years.

I love the narrator’s voice! My parents gave us these old Disney movies like Charlie the Lonesome Cougar, Snowball Express, Davy Crocket, 5-Mile Creek, Shaggy Dog, Apple Dumpling Gang, etc. Even though they weren’t the newest shows/movies, WE LOVED THEM! And still do! I think that kids today should watch some of these old shows instead of what they’re watching now and I bet if they did that for long enough a lot of the problems in this country might start to fade away a little…
