Not too happy about the music; as it only washed away the subtle feelings of the environment. Less is more right. Nice to see it was not oversaturated though, as many do way too much. Kyoto is in my onion one of the very beautiful places on our earth, especially the gardens. I had to stop after 3:29 due to the slow pace of only seeing canopy footage, try the "Less is More" theme and ration the leaf shots. Maybe music that does not sound like marketing for some Airline?

Whoever made this must have been a big animation fan in the late 80s and early 90s, and was watching everything from mainstream stuff to the late-night compilation shows, like Liquid Television and Oh Canada.

RAP-10 is closest to the CD version of Grab Bag from Atomic Edition, maybe the exact card Jackson used to compose it. More channels and instruments on the CD version but the instruments used sound the same.

I know this is a 9 year old video, but surely there must be a soundtrack compilation of this with the Roland MT-32 sound? Or if there is a way you can record the sound and output it as mp3’s?
@DBob01 Жыл бұрын
This ancient video (which happened to be uploaded 9 years ago) has been recorded via a potato by todays standard. I recorded it back then, because there was no MT-32 recording at all, from the Mortal Kombat games. None. I guess nobody care. I guess nobody cares still. But the real "problem" is, The Compaq PC, the Roland MT-32, every piece of equipment (including the flat where it has been recorded) are long gone. Loooong gone. So I cannot record it to you, sadly. But Roland itself has an authentic SC-55 emulator. As far as I remember, MKII handles SC-55 as well, which supposed to be superior to the MT-32. You can use that even today.

How did it sound so high-quality coming out of a PC speaker? I seriously can't understand how by just thinking about it
@Novous2 жыл бұрын
The PC speaker can be "on or off" (1-bit). But, if your rapidly swing it while its still moving, it cannot move fast enough, and you reach middle positions which gives you higher resolutions. They use a technique called pulse-width modulation. There's even a Linux sound driver for the PC Speaker! Arduinos and raspberry pi's (and other chips) can also use this method to send out audio. [The actual speaker in a PC would sound far worse than what we're hearing because the speakers themselves are usually cheap. But if you then played the audio meant for the PC speaker into a real speaker system you'd get what we're hearing.]

For everyone saying the roland RAP-10 is the best, the roland rap-10 just sounds like an sc-55 with added reverb.

This song actually has a noticeable difference between instrumentation on the sc-55 and rap-10, with the rap-10 notable having a more powerful snare drum.

After decades of thinking of the MT-32 as the ultimate and unreachable pie in the sky (as far as sound devices for DOS games go) I am really getting disappointed by it. It makes everything sound like some generic MIDI (in the sense like Windows XP had it)... yes, a little bit higher fidelity, but still. The Adlib rendition sounds much more unique, it has a sci-fi atmosphere to it, which is completely lost on the MT-32.

finally i found someone on youtube that had the version of the theme song i remember. there is a small lets say clicking sound in the theme between 1:47 and 1:49 before the loop starts and it seems only soundblasters had that. No other video on YT has that sound.

Agree with the preference for the Soundblaster. The SC-55 does sound great and the reverb is definitely nice but the FM synthesizer makes the track sound so chunky and I love it. I just found this video while searching for what Blackthorne sounded like on the GUS because I thought it would be awesome but it's actually my least preferred of the two LOL. Thanks for posting the comparison.

There's a patch for Dune 2 to use multiple sound devices, so you, for example, can use MT-32 for music and SB Pro for sound effects and speech: www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=16541
