@@WASHINGTONSTATEDOGTRAINERand so what if he comes across as a wanna be Bill Hillmann. He stated that he's known Bill Hillmann for years and has paid tribute to him as a great trainer and has followed and used his methods. That's a compliment. I follow and use Bill Hillmanns methods. Wish I would have known of them 40 years ago when I got my first retriever. If you follow Mike Pindwood you'll that see he demonstrates his own drills. All in all training retrievers is a variation on a theme. How many trainers out there have written books and produced videos? When you compare all of them the process is pretty much the same. Yes they all have their tips and techniques that they add to accomplish this or that but in the end it's basically the same and you can cherry pick from one or another trainer's methods to fit your program. So why be so critical? Where does that get you?

Excellent! Since we live in Alaska and Montana it can be too icy to train safe outside (or -40 degrees and too cold). With my labs, I work on backwards heeling, 2-sided heeling, wagon wheel lining, no-no barrier jumps, poison bird mechanics indoors (downstairs in our carpeted basement). I also introduce duck calls and dog blind indoors during the winter.

I don't like lineing back, stopping a retriever and then casting back...that sends the wrong message. I want them to quickly understand every time they hear the sit whistle, they are running the wrong route and MUST CHANGE DIRECTION with the next cast.

ACTUALLY WHISTLE STOP IS HANDLING , AND A DOG SHOULD GO WHERE YOU TELL IT !!!!!! WE DO THAT IS T DRILLS .... YOUR RIGHT BUT VOICE AND NO VOICE IS A CHANGE THE DIRECTION OR INDICATION TO HANDLE !!!!!
@RetrieverTrainingAlone

@@WASHINGTONSTATEDOGTRAINER If the dog does not hear a whistle, he should understand he is running the correct route. A whistle is a handle to inform the dog, wrong route, now change direction according to the handlers case. I love this drill for teaching and maintaining these concepts: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apqAn9qjv67Wk3U.htmlsi=Zj7suviBFeKLb3Dj
