Great video, Col Potter. Unfortunately, I think there's a mindset that if you're not on the track you describe to be a general (like the 1% who actually make it that far), then you're worthless as an officer. Not everyone can be top graduate, DG, or a commander. And that's fine; I don't want any of that stuff. I just want to be a crew dawg and fly airplanes till they kick me out, and I have my 20-year letter already. For those who want to make everything about a big competition with your peers, more power to you, but frankly not everyone is General's material and those who act like they are normally kiss a lot of ass. It's annoying to those of us who just want to get the job done, not to mention just a very stressful way to lead a career for the majority who mathematically just can't make it to the top ranks.

I have seen other videos on KZfaq about this tragic event. Here we clearly had Lt. Col. Holland who was a rogue pilot and routinely pulled off dangerous stunts while flying the B-52 Bomber. Also the Air Force leadership were told about the dangerous things this man was doing and they failed to ground this pilot, and failed to take disciplinary action against him. As a result this dangerous rogue pilot did a very dangerous high bank turn and crashed the B-52 bomber and killed himself and three other men.

When you look at it zoomed in you can see what appears to be the co pilot attempting to eject. You see the top panel blow off but sadly way too low and no time to complete ejection. Just horrible.

I'm just astounded by how many people who argue that Top Gun is reality who have never piloted even a Cessna or served in the military. "Tom Cruise owns a fighter" and "he researched it". No, he is an actor. He never served. He wants to make money. He found an audience of "go America" types who he wowed and made a ton of money on adrelin-packed scenes of air-to-air combat. Dogfights came back in Vietnam because the technology just wasn't there with our air-to-air missiles. The jets were still expendable. Today, a pilot who the Navy, Marines, or Air Force has invested millions of dollars in training, flying a $100 million+ aircraft is a lot more aware of bringing that aircraft back rather than engaging in heroics and possibly losing an example of our technology behind enemy lines. The Army Air Force studied air-to-air kills in WW1 and WW2 and came to the conclusion that most pilots died without ever knowing who their pursuer was. Tactics were always geared towards quick hits, and getting away. Dogfights were a coin flip. Today an F-22 or F-35 can get a firing lock on the enemy w/o engaging its own radar, and will typically FAVOR lobbing a missile BVR and taking out the enemy before they knew what hit them.

"Top Gun" and "Officer ...." really are the best. That being said, low "B" expectation movie "Iron Eagle" did quite fantastic as a feel good, aviation cinematic film with not only Louis Gossett Jr but also the seasoned great, David Suchet. Not only that, it hosted a batch of young actors that would star or starred in films such as The Karate Kid, Teen Wolf, and Revenge of The Nerds. Not too shabby a compilation that the US Air Force wanted nothing to do with, but the Israeli Air Force backed. I wise call I think.

@@storminscellar7207 As a professional pilot like you, I would cringe too. I get it. Shows how the patriotic vibes and a stellar supporting caste carried Doug Masters ... because [LOL] they killed him off in Iron Eagle 2 and made [ugggh] cringier sequels. That being said, I listened on/off to Top Gun and Iron Eagle sound tracks on the way to my private pilot flight lessons...which I finished this February at age 50. Totally cheesy, but it needed the nostalgic motivation because getting licensed was much longer/harder than I thought it would be. Anyway, thanks for the friendly feedback.

in this movie m61 vulcan sounds like a 12mm M2 Browning cannon and I know why! because the scripts and all the dogfight tests were on WWII fighters Maybe it's that of a P63 if I remember correctly a Kingcobra or a p40 Those fight scenes are nice, right? :D Bombing and dogfight is built on a simulator where lines from the film were also made in connection. Once upon a time there was this simulator with a player who had a Russian plane, this player had to go down because he had some bad guys from Hollywood behind him and he threw himself into these canyons so he found a mountain on the side and flew over it and did this bombing maneuver which is a real maneuver that the Stukas did and descended this mountain to the halfway point, after which the Hollywood villains had failed and therefore had gone straight, so the player took off the descent and caught the tail of the Hollywood villain. That he was so surprised that he couldn't believe the shit he had made. the exclamation was WOW he did it!

As an Indian (17f), my dream has always been to serve in the Air Force, either as a pilot or an aeronautical engineer. I've been getting up 4 am and running before school ever since I was 13, and let me tell you, the boys and girls I run with are like my brothers and sisters. We help each other, guve each other tips on how to exercise better, practice spekaing and sometimes, have fun figuring out tactics. We know that at the end of the day, our motto is 'Service before Self', and we all work hard to embody that. I know that getting into defense in India is difficult but I feel reassured in the knowledge that I will be chosen solely off of my competence, and that to me, will be the greatest honour. Jai Hind.

As a former enlisted man and an aircrew member of the 7th ACCS during the Vietnam police action, a predecessor to your 42nd, with 1000 hours turning circles in the barrel, I knew of many instances where officers got away with violations left and right. Slight violations by an EM would bring a LOR or Article 15 at least. Right, wrong or indifferent it happened, real leaders don't allow anyone to be dangerous without significant actions. My dream was to be an Air Force pilot, it didn't happen but lessons I learned in the USAF stood me in good stead in the civilian world. I learned what a great leader did, he takes care of his men and doesn't tolerate people like LtCol Holland.
