So, my dumbass left the microphone active while playing. My friend and I don't say anything offensive, but some of our discussion is personal. What a surprise from Nightdive! This is one of the more forgotten early FPS titles. I had it on both Playstation and 3DO (speaking of 3DO, I don't know that I'd call it "EA's console" - the two have Trip Hawkins as a founder in common, but 3DO was a partnership of many companies including EA). As you noted, it's a zany, ambitious, and flawed experience, and you're right that playing at sub-30 fps on a 7-button controller could be...challenging (although, speaking again of 3DO, it does indeed have dedicated strafe buttons with the L and R shoulders). Despite its flaws something about this game really captivated me back in the 90s. The vertically-oriented levels and six degrees of freedom with which to explore them were impressive for the time, especially on the weaker 3DO hardware. And just being in these huge, abstract environments, with their inscrutable, paper-thin architecture, hearing the sounds of machinery humming in the distance, created an eerie atmosphere at times. PO'ed may be an early contender for representation of "liminal spaces" in video games. Oh and the weapon selection was nuts! I liked the missile you could guide to its target, and how after doing some up close and personal alien drilling, your character wipes the blood off the screen. Also did you know you can backflip, accompanied by an extremely cheesy Bruce Lee-inspired sound effect? Is there a single other FPS with a backflip button? That's gotta count for something right?? The hub world doesn't ring a bell, that sounds like it might be an addition by Nightdive. I recall level progression being strictly linear in the original.
@killall-games
@killall-games 22 күн бұрын
I suppose cultural osmosis has fused the stories of EA and 3DO together, so I apologize if I made that error. The hub, as well, is merely my best way to describe the first level. You can't select the other two episodes, but all three are contained in the final room. You revisit that same level two more times.
@DoggoneNexus
@DoggoneNexus 22 күн бұрын
@@killall-games Oh ok, I might be mistaken about revisiting the first level. I do remember there being multiple teleports at the end now that I think about it. No need to apologize, EA was hugely important to the 3DO and the two were intimately linked after all. Trip Hawkins sure is an interesting fella.

interesting video, Peter. one thing you mentioned that is still prevalent now more than ever is that discussions around video games often turn into dunking. as a reviewer, I always find it hard to give a negative review but when it comes, I do my best to explain and justify it. ultimately tho, while not all press is good press, I do agree with your point that sometimes even a negative review can peak someone’s interest and that’s a job well done at the end of the day.

It's more from the perspective of being in games media. For whatever reason, writing for an outlet triggers a certain part of terminally online people's minds where they disagree with you even if you're giving a 10/10. It's very disheartening and I'm glad I'm not still reviewing for any outlets.

Ever played through dungeons in a low-budget RPG? This is, what this game reminds me of. You have a super simplistic dungeons... and suddenly, some sort of gimmic gets introduced. In order to solve the gimmig, you have to do something super simple. So... that's for the introduction... and in the next room, the same gimmic, but harder... but still extremely simple. And then it gets used a last time, but even harder... but simple enough to serve as the introduction in a big budget title. After that, the gimmic is gone from the game. It's never used again, it never got close to be challenging or thought provoking. It's like the designer have some awesome ideas but are either too afraid to challenge their audience or they aren't experienced enough to do something worthwhile with their idea.

I had this on PS1 and...god I hated it. It didn't run bad at all, from memory, but the controls were god-awful and it looked chunky as all hell. The level design is crazy, and I would call it bad. (Typing this as I watch, following up from my premature comment, also best song in Quake II...you have great taste. Nevermind. You just used the menu music from Wolfenstein 3D. Lol. You sunofabeotch.) Great review, and even greater idea for a review. I don't know who else would even bother with this. I never played it on the 3DO, but I can't imagine it played anywhere near as well as it did on the PS1, and even there it wasn't good. The 3D map is definitely a must. I remember buying this for the PS1 because it was $3, complete, and in a long box, and even back in the mid-2000's, long boxes had some extra appeal. Great review and perfect point. Even bad games need to be remembered. And even bad games deserve a chance to be better, which...this does look better.

What, 3 hubs?! I thought I finished the game after the 1st one. I though...eh, another one? What could the game possibly offer after the 1st "episode"? I've only done one map from ep2, and so far it gave me fewer checkpoints and more frustrating enemy encounters and a rail gun. This game's too late to the party, as you said. I followed the development and it was a total disappointment. They claimed that they wanted to be agile and all, but this is the complete opposite of agile software development. We've got a bloated, underwhelming game with too many ideas and no clear focus.
