I for one will never know if a rod beyond 200 bucks is better... because I will never own one unless the blank n components are 300 or less... I pretty much build all my Rods.. that said one of my only 2 bought rods I just broke in the crack of a door... n now I need 2 search out a 9' 4wt blank to move it's components too... it was a diamondback all American...

99% of the fish I catch are small enough that they don't go running off with the line no matter how light the drag is, so spending 1000 dollars on a machine with one moving part seems beyond ridiculous

Interesting. I just came back from a vacation that took us through the National Parks in Colorado, South Dakota, and Wyoming. I went into maybe 8 different fly shops on the way, looking for info on the fishing in each area. All of them were proudly displaying rods that cost between $3,000 and $6,000. Yes, there were lower priced rods available like Echo, but these were not out front. Add to this the high cost reels, line, waders, boots, etc. they were selling and all of what you are saying makes sense. I'll keep my St. Croix rod and Bass Pro reel continue to cast tight loops that are spot on, and count my blessings.

It’s like jigging with a spinning rod. It’s all good. I don’t care if you use worms n minnows on your fly rod.

My competition occurs when I’m alone and change techniques to fully explore a section of stream. Fly bouncing bottom. Fly in line or on dropper 6” from bottom. Fly on float/indicator that rides up against the vines/branches along an undercut bank. Streamer at tail out of pool. Dry fly on top, emergent just below. No one technique reaches all these places. That 1 extra fish you catch when you change makes the day sometimes, not just because it’s another fish, but because you learned something catching it.

Brock go wrestle that Sex dungeon from that willow bush across the river said Kelly . And like the Sex Dungeon you to need Mutual of Omaha to protect you from the wild willow bushes . And after all of that he gets guided , set set set :-) beautiful river with some very cool scenery, thanks for sharing.

Kelly. Hello from the Boardman river! Been out throwing a bunch of DD’s and some big butt monkeys. Wish I would have been as into throwing big streamers back when you were around the area. Probably could have learned a thing or two. After they took out all of the upper dams the river is running cleaner and colder than ever. You ever get back up here?

Ok. Should've added this at my first comment. Now, to be fair, I own 2 euro rods. 3wt 10.5' and a 4wt the same. They both have the heavy Remington Tilt's on them with the added 3oz weights that perfectly balances the rods. One is fitted with true euro leader material totaling 20' so fly line hardly ever if ever touches the water. Yes. I've caught trout with that method and it's very, very, very boring, so I don't call it fly fishing, It's puddle fishing. So, where I go for trout in Missouri Montauk SP twice per month for 3 days, I fish 2 spots on Pigeon Creek and 3 spots on the Current River. The head waters of the Current is Pigeon Creek's freezing spring fed. I meander the flow in the 2 bodies of water that join. So, I'm not only truly fly fishing wet's, beaded nymphs, small and big streamers and Kelly's big guys on the Current River for incoming browns and big Bow's with the occasional dry when the trout are working the surface which is hardly ever, though I'm sure when they are suspended in 2-3', they'll rise to catch the dry before it runs past them. I'm not fishing only in one spot, one body of water. I see dozens and dozen with fly rods. I'd say the ones carrying a fly rod truthfully 85% are so called euro-nymphing as I'm guessing because there is NO CASTING SKILLS (literally, anyone can euro-nymph) to it like there is to real fly fishing. You just plop up stream keeping the rod tip at the indicator, lift and boringly repeat. Also so called because they are using 8.5 - 9' rods with an indicator with only 8-9 foot of leader. I've never seen a true Euro10.5-11 footer out there with an extra long leader. NOTE: I really enjoy the Euro 4wt 10.5' using it for everything but Euro. It's set up with the Tilt, 9-12' of leader material and Rio Trout or Gold. It has plenty of power for a 13-17" bow. So! Just because they are fishing with a fly in any kind of way, don't call it fly fishing. Another NOTE: There is a neat trick that even I've done so I can cast a mile in lakes is to buy a bobber that you can partially fill with water and plug it with a tooth pick with 18-20" of leader after the bobber and attach a nymph or dry. Still, that's NOT fly fishing. World Euro Nymphing Champion is LAUGHABLE!

I started fly fishing when I was 9 years old. I saved up my allowance, and bought a $6.00 rod off the clearance rack at Clarkin’s in Kent Ohio. A $4.00 reel and some level line. I used 6lb test mono to make my leader/tippet. I used that flyrod setup until I was a SGT in the Army. It caught Bass, Bluegill, big Northern Pike in Michigan, Trout and Land Locked Salmon in Maine, and I can even recount all of the other fish and states! I never knew there was anything better. Today, I swing a Sage XP that I bought used at the local fly shop. It isn’t about money.
