Bags like this have a purpose. If you're carrying a bunch of gear to a location and not necessarily shooting along the way then it's fine for that. I like to shoot on the go. I've really like the Think Tank Rotation bags for that purpose.

@@dragonphotostudio I do both, plus I need to have a quick access to my drone. I always carry a lot of gear and shoot along the way heading for some spots to fly and go. I don't think it would be convenient although it looks great. I love this rotation feature but I'd like to have it as option rather than the main thing. Too bad because this does have some wonderful features. Thanks again

@@TravelNatureEU any way you go with Think Tank you know it'll be quality. But IMO the Rotation bags are clutch. I have all three sizes. I love the smallest for quick day trips with a small camera and snacks/ jacket up top. The mid size is great bc you can add an insert to the top section and it adds much more storage pockets. The largest is also great but probably TOO big for most day trips. I have another video where I used that on an actual over night backpacking trip and it worked great!

It depends. The Barbour Hill sites tend to have better service than the False Cape Landing sites. Essentially the deeper you get into the park the worse the service gets. And it also depends on the provider. Weve been out with verizon and att and sometimes one will work better than others. I have verizon and I typically have service.

I like your results. Balancing all needs is tough. You've got the need to pack everything to get to a destination, then reduce that once you get there depending on what you are doing. Keeping both bags makes sense. Frankly I think getting a good dedicated backpacking bag with the right compartments and access (and modern materials with better fit) and then adding inserts might be the way to go modular.
@dragonphotostudio
@dragonphotostudio 5 ай бұрын
That works too. I think it depends on how you like to hike and how you like to shoot. If you want to constantly take the pack off to get to stuff going with a traditional backpack + insert would work. When I go backpacking I use something completely different. I have videos on that setup as well. Essentially its a ultra light front carry system. But the Rotation bags are fantastic for on the go shooting. I actually have been using the removable waist packs for all sorts of stuff from bike packing to running my audio while shooting commercial video.

@dragonphotostudio
@dragonphotostudio 7 ай бұрын
I'm not familiar with Fuji. I shoot Canon. However, the depth of the 34L rotation pouch is 7.25 inches (roughly 18.5 cm) It'll be close. You might be able to squeeze it in there but it'd be tight. I brought some larger lenses and you can put them in the top. It's less than ideal if you want to quickly get to them. Or you could maybe fit it at an angle. You could probably fit the lens on the camera body length wise in the pouch as well.

Thanks for the response @@dragonphotostudio ! Then it will probably not be meeting my needs. I want to benefit from the rotation feature with both XT5+70-300 mounted (that is 20cm total) + one (maybe 2) small extra lenses, hence the need to store it vertically. I think I'll go for the Backlight 26 instead, and use my capture clip to keep instant access to the camera. Cheers!

I am looking for a camera backpack for weekend overnight hikes in the mountains. I am choosing between this bag and the WANDRD FERNWEH. I wonder if the Mindshift 50l can fit a Sony a7iv with a lens and a DJI Mini 3 Pro with a controller. I do not want to buy an extra cube as I need space for the rest of my things. I am also curious about the breathability of the back panel. It does not look as good as the WANDRD one. I would really appreciate your comments on this.
@dragonphotostudio
@dragonphotostudio 8 ай бұрын
I've never put my hands on the Wandrd Fernweh but I did look up the specs. I think they are similar size and weight. Giving a slight advantage to Mindshift on size but also a point off for being slightly heavier. There are more similar packs like the Lowepro that are more similar to the Wandrd. With those style packs you need to remove the pack in some fashion to get to your gear. With the Rotation series you dont have to do any of that. You can grab what you need without stopping really. So it comes down to how you plan on shooting. When I backpack sometimes I like to shoot while walking or snap a quick shot. I found I take less photos when I have to remove the pack to get the shot. It really has to be worth the effort. I think the Rotation is also geared more toward overnight backpacking trips rather than longer day trips like the Wandrd seems to be. In terms of how much gear you can carry- I shoot with Canon but would assume it would come down to lens selection. If you roll with a smaller lens you shouldn't have a problem with the camera, lens and DJI mini. You might need to put the controller somewhere else in the pack but you'd be surprised at how big the camera pouch is on the 50+.

I was concerned with the itchiness of the Appalachian Gear hoody when I first got it. The owner of the company said that while some people may not be able to tolerate wool fabric against the skin, most of the discomfort will disappear when the shorter hairs fall away. I found this to be true for me. Washing was a game changer. A big plus is the Oder control properties of this fabric. The hoody can be worn for many days without stinking.

I fell in love with the first version of the rotation series when I bought the 22l version. When I saw them coming out with a v2, I joined their kickstarter campaign and got the 34l. The nice thing about the top is you don't even need to buy their insert. You can buy a little shoulder bag insert and still have room for other stuff. I love the bag except for a full frame setup, the hip pack seems too small still. Hence why I also bought the Backlight 36l. I certainly don't love that bag as much as the rotation 34l, but it has it's place in my backpack arsenal. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

The backlight is also a great bag. All Think Tank products are made extremely well. But for me the Backlight is just like any other camera bag. You have to either take it off or swing it around on your hips and fumble with the back flap. The Rotation is perfect for people who need quick access. Possibly the only downside would be the size of the actual rotation pack portion. You can't carry ALL your gear in it but to me, that's not the point. I like to go light when I hike and backpack a the Rotation allows me to do that.

Great video mate, as Jim Carry said in Dumb & Dumber 'I like it.... I like it A LOT!' Thanks to your video (part 1 & 2) on this bag, I now plan to use the 50 Litre Pro / Plus for extended outings on full day treks and perhaps overnighters this Spring / Summer. I assume this content was shot along the East Coast / NY state coastline? I am from Australia 🇦🇺 and surprised how similar it is to my home town area of the South East Queensland coastline. Look up Fraser Island, Cooloola Coast (Teewah / Noosa Northshore) Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island. If you ever get down under someday you'd love these locations if you like coastal walks and camping, it's absolute paradise and a photographer's playground! I am so lucky to live so close. Yep, like ANY well organised Photographer I do have a case of GAS only mine is slightly severe. Do I dare mention my other gear collected from 30 plus years?.... Have you done a video on Carrying Systems (Cotton Carrier, Spider, Peak Design) ? That would be a good one, I'd be keen to have your input. BTW... I have the new Micro Clutch (i plate & L plate) from Peak Design they've dropped the ball on that 'design' in a few areas. Anyway, have a good one mate 👍 I'll look forward to the 50 Litre Plus / Pro arriving soon

@@davidfromdownunder I've used other carry options. I've had the think tank belt system. I liked that but it was a lot of straps etc... I've tried the Peak Design clips too on backpack straps but never liked how it would pull that strap. It felt uneven. I do use the lens capture carry from Peak Design all the time for weddings. Rather than carry two cameras I just have an extra lens instead. I shoot a lot with the 28-70 f2. So if I'm swapping it's for a 70-200 or something during a ceremony or portraits. But when it comes to the nature stuff or hiking and backpacking I go with the Rotation. When I do ultralight backpacking I have a custom diy front carry bag that I made that weighs less than 1 oz.

By adding the Stash Master you will be able to carry more camera gear but you will lose the majority of the upper area to fit other gear. Having said that, you could partially pack the Stash Master with camera gear and personal items but you will probably significantly decrease the amount of space you'll have. thank you for making this video. When you remove the top pouch how does the 45L pouch compare with the 36L? Is it noticeably bigger? I'm torn between the two. I much prefer the darker colors of the 36L but it lacks the important top pocket/access to the camera from the top like on the 45L. I'm concerned about the flight issues too- especially on smaller propeller planes with tiny tiny overhead compartments or with budget airlines. I'm not too worried about them randomly checking my bag because it usually only happens with rolling suitcases.
@dragonphotostudio

To be honest they seem like they are exactly the same. There may be some slight differences. But in the difference of 36L and 45L measurements the 45L has more space in the pockets and front pouch and top pocket area like you mentioned. I would also say that if your 45L were to get flagged on a plane you could strip it down of the brain and frame if needed. The 36L I think also pushes the airplane size limits. In all honesty I would purchase the 45L over the 36L if you want a giant backpack. I'd also throw the 50L Rotation into the mix too. With the addition of the Stash Master you'd have a lot of carry space too. I'm doing some testing on the 50L Rotation and plan to put that out soon.

Where as the 36 was just a camera bag and nothing else. The 45L is big though and it's bigger than the 36L for sure. Mainly taller. Personally I like the 45L better but that's me. I'm 6'1" 185lbs.

@@dragonphotostudio Thank you again. Also, is there a difference with the thickness of the bags and the straps? I heard that the 45 has better fabric?

@@kyleledotnet The straps are both well padded. I think since the 45L is taller it fit me a little better. The hip belt sat on my hips a bit better. I like the use of some ultralight fabrics on the Eliter45L. The 36L is nice but more of a typical photo backpack.

I have one of the B10's and the fan noise using it as a video light is pretty loud and it overheats... have you found this case with yours? I'm considering picking up a couple more for my studio, as they seem like just the right tool for all my use case. Was comparing to the Godox AD300 Pro, but after my Godox V1 mount breaking multiple times a season on shoots, I'm fed up and seeking a more reliable better built system.

I have not had an overheating issue with any of mine. I typically don't use them for incredibly long periods of time for video use. I use those for smaller jobs or when I need something more portable or when I need to shoot photo and video in the same day. I haven't had much issue with fan noise either. But typically I use lab mics or have a boom mic far enough from the lights. I have a couple Godox led lights and can definitely understand the mount breaking. It's pretty soft plastic for a main support. It is way brighter than the B10s though. But most often I am grabbing my B10's for video or photo work.

@@dragonphotostudio Thanks so much for the reply. And how many B10's do you have in your kit? Do you find yourself considering the B10X or Plus models?
@dragonphotostudio
@dragonphotostudio Жыл бұрын
@@shaymarkowitz3969 I have one B10 and 2 B10 Plus and an A1. I keep one B10+ and the A1 in my main rolling bag at all times. And carry the B10 and 2nd B10+ when I need more. I need to do a follow up video to this one and talk about the addition of the B10+. That extra power comes in handy more often.

I agree. Its a great bag. I wish I had a purpose for it. I just fell in love with the Rotation bags so much. Im actually in the process of seeing if multiday backpacking trips are possible with the 50L version.

Which has the least odor after prolonged use? How’s the stink from the Alpaca?
@dragonphotostudio
@dragonphotostudio Жыл бұрын
The Alpaca stinks the least for sure. I have two of them. The gold one in this video and a teal one. Ive washed both of them under 5 times. Theyll mainly get washed after a trip but only to avoid smelling like a campfire.

Nice video! Planning a bikepack out on Friday. What time of year was this?
@dragonphotostudio
@dragonphotostudio Жыл бұрын
This was back in Oct last year. Check the tides. This time of year you can't ride your bike through Back Bay Wildlife Refuge and you have to ride the beach until you get to False Cape. It's roughly 2 miles of road and 3 miles of beach riding. Looks like low tide is right around noon on Friday man. So you should be good! You're usually good for an hour before and after the lowest tide time.

@@dragonphotostudio yep already checked the tides, thanks! Looks more like 1.5mile of road and 5.5 miles of beach riding to false cape landing campsites though.

@@SimonCher ah yea. the False Cape landing sites are further than the Barbour Hill sites. There isn't fresh water for drinking at those sites. You can stop off at Barbour Hill (but I think they shut off the water this time of year) You can get drinking water from the visitor center. There's a spigot out front but I recommend the "fountain" between the bathrooms. It tastes better! The others can get a chlorine taste to them.

@@dragonphotostudio yep they are closed at barbour. Just a single night though, probably just get water on my way out. Thanks for the taste tip, makes sense that the fountain is filtered!
