False Cape State Park Solo Backpacking Overnighter

I made it out to False Cape State Park for a solo over night backpacking trip. I wanted to test out some cold weather gear before the end of the season. It was only around 40 degrees over night but since you can't have fires in the park it always feels a little colder than it is.

Great video. A friend took his family there to camp and saw a sign that said "Watch out for Water Moccasins" and there was one literally laying at the base of the sign.

Oh yea! They are out there the second it starts getting warm. Peak summer months are the worst for it. You can easily see 5-6+ in an out and back.

NICE! That first road is THE WORST! We called it False Hope Road back in the 90s. LOL

There are of other places on the east coast you can camp on the beach. The Carolinas have a few and there's two parks with beach camping within 15 miles from me here in Florida.

Did you have cell service on the beach? (I need service for my medical devices to work together)

It depends. The Barbour Hill sites tend to have better service than the False Cape Landing sites. Essentially the deeper you get into the park the worse the service gets. And it also depends on the provider. Weve been out with verizon and att and sometimes one will work better than others. I have verizon and I typically have service.

Thanks for sharing the video. I am actually heading down there to do 2 nights on April 1st but staying at the southern campgrounds (Oceanside #21). Any recommendations on things I should bring?

Awesome. It should be a good weekend for it. A good tip would be that you don't need to carry ALL of the water you need for the entire trip. You can carry a couple "empties" and fill up at any of the Barbour Hill camping areas or Visitor Center. There is a water fountain between the bathrooms at the visitor's center that has the best tasting water. I recommend dinner and sunset on the dock on the bay side. If you visit the church remains and cemetery there is a trail directly across from there that leads to a tower with a pretty cool view. By bike it's possible to get around to most of the areas. It gets pretty sandy but if you push through you can ride sections past the sand. And beach riding is always fun- at low tide! Hope you have a BLAST!
