is it best practice for the data wrangler to format cards or is it best practice for the cam op to format after data has been dumped and confirmed by the data wrangler it's okay to format?

I like boom mics and use the most of the time myself, but my question is: if you don’t use lavs as frequently anymore, what do you do for noisy environments? Occasionally, we find ourselves in noisy environments because the client can’t be convinced to go in a different location, and there’s not much that can be done about it, other than trying to filter noise out in post. I’ve found that sometimes it’s hard to get the boom microphone close enough to the subject in those situations and I’m forced to use a Lavalier mic. what do you do in those situations?

That’s where I love using some offload software like Shotput or even Resolve’s media manager in a pinch… the automation of multi-destination transfers with checksums at the end of a day is a massive relief. Besides refections , changing lighting ,etc , the biggest problem IMHO , is that if there isn't a shot ,very clearly showing there is a window there , it looks like chromakey , as in this video . I found this out the hard way doing single person interviews , but if you have a frame showing there is window ,like some of the window frame you can get away with it . But generally thats a shot I would avoid like the plague .

The balance of color and exposure on the subject vs the window background is soo good.

Having been in the biz. for a good length of time and knowing that there are many ways to skin a cat, I wonder, when you post these informative videos, if you appreciate feed back. I enjoy seeing what other people do and how they see a setup. Without knowing what the brief is and not knowing the limitations often put on solo shooters, one should not jump in and give one's opinion willy nilly, but man it is difficult to sit or stand by and hold one's tongue. However if you do wish to hear what I think please do not hesitate to let me know.

There is still some echo / reverb in the sound. I guess these big glass sheets are hard to battle (I can see there is one in the front too). Maybe additional sound blanket behind the cameras would help.

Confidence is something I sometimes struggle with - mostly when I'm in front of the lens. Imposter syndrome sets in. Who am I to act as an authority on any subject when there are so many others clearly more skilled than I am? But I have to tell myself that what I have to say is going to be valuable to someone out there. I don't have to please everyone.

Last time I worked with a sound guy he mentioned how he double booms everything he does lately. But he said it's something he just started doing in the last year and a half or so. Apparently it's a big thing with Netflix docs nowadays he said. But probably just good practice no matter what. I love a good backup.

And number five, you gain the moniker Jem “Two Mic” Schofield, and then people start calling you Jem Mike Mike Schofield- or just Jem Mikes- and general hilarity ensues. With the “clean” secondary mic, do you ever run into any acoustic disparity when you have to rely on it mid mix? Good for you if you're going to have a go with it on a more professional level I just take photographs for a living and do some video but that is just for me. I decided I wouldn't bother with anything even semi-pro in the way of video after a friend of mine who is a cinematographer told me about six seconds of video he needed to take for an advert. Two lighting guys and an assistant cameraman it involved the hiring of a warehouse for about 10 days a bar had to be built inside this Warehouse it had to then be turned in to a nightclub where they large bar and the DJ and nearly 100 experts add someone to choreograph the extras and for the main extras they needed a dresser and makeup and then there were the two talents a man and a woman who were walking to the bar to order a drink that the advert was about. This six seconds of video he shot over the course of three days yes three days the whole 10 day from when the warehouse was handed over until they cleared everything out for six seconds of video cost in excessive £250,000. Would I like to make videos? NO.

Redundancy in IT systems are good too! 😉

A slightly different idea is backup gear or what I call my B rig. For each critical piece of gear have a second typically lower quality piece of gear in case the first breaks. That might be an additional camera body or a zoom lens to backup your set of primes. In my case it is my old Tascam DR-70D recorder to backup my Zoom F6. Or a set of wired earbuds to back up your headphones. This way if your primary piece of equipment breaks you have something to fall back on.

As one of my favourite local audio recorders says, “When you’ve got one of something, you’ve got none of something.” Thanks for this Jem! My colleagues might make fun of me for always being overequipped, but I’ll take that for the comfort of having gear redundancy any day.

I put it in my cart before I saw this post! Like minds... I needed something like this last week while I was live with a LiveU 800 for almost 4 hours at a balloon rally. I freaked when I was down to 29% with an hour and a half to go. I made it through but had to compromise for 30 minutes while the LiveU backpack was on house power.

Really good deal on the Solex F2600. I own it and it’s very useful with my Forza 720b & on set monitors. More than double the capacity of the 1000

Excellent purchase! Can you “constant run” the thing by leaving the solar panels attached while drawing from it, or is it a one-or-the-other deal?

I went with the same thing but the DJI version for another $100. The inverter seems to be enough for even an Aputure 600 or even 1200.

I have a Lumu light meter. Works great for the work I do (small commercials and corporate work). Had it for years. I thought I lost it and ordered a second one. Long story short, I had the credit card refund the charge because I heard nothing from the company, not even a purchase confirmation email. Months later I received an email from them stating the issues they are facing. I loved the product and was willing to buy a second one. Now that I saw the Lit Duo, I may replace the Lumu. The Lumu just broke two months ago. I backed the Lit Duo kickstarter. I hope it’s good. Bummer that it won’t show up for a year.

A “what would you sell for gear XYZ and how much could you make” is a neat challenge. Why not acknowledge that we all have stuff that we very likely could sell. If we’re not using it, it’s good to challenge our thoughts of “yeah, but what if I need it?”

Excellent tip! The small impact on deployment efficiency is completely offset by the long term viability of the gear. At the shop we have a milk crate full of compromised clamps all of which are in fantastic shape, except for the missing/broken tightening screws. Thanks for this Jem!

Can you use a longer cable or are those proprietary and determine speed?

It all makes sense. A lot of my decisions around ISO are also driven by the particular camera. Some cameras like M43s are best left at ISO 800 max due to possible unwanted sensor artifacts. We don’t all have the latest and greatest cameras. If possible, bring in more lighting.

Have a look at PAG link batteries, UK company expensive but great.

@Ben IDX AFAIK has those types of material safety info available. I think some of it is also right on the battery. Enjoy the shoot!
