Hey y'all. Really enjoying your videos. Next time through that area you can split up your route so its not such a long run. my 24-foot Yamaha jet boat draws 6 inches at speed. Anything less than 3 feet you have a chance of vacuuming the bottom which cannot be good. My worst experience was leaving the Meldahl Lock on the Ohio River at no wake speed and sucking a walnut into an impeller. Anything over 2,000 RPM and I had severe vibrations. We couldn't find the source until we started taking the jet apart and solved it with a long screwdriver and a hammer to punch out the walnut. No one had ever jammed nut in the jet. Usually, it is the nut at the wheel. My boat is often used as a Coast Guard Auxiliary patrol boat upriver from Cincinnati. Hope you had good experiences with the Coast Guard on your voyages.

I feel your anchoring anxiety pain...lol been there. We are in Florida anchoring so wind and solid anchoring are absolute! Here is what I did to help me feel better when the winds are high or expected to pick up. I upgraded our Chartplotter to enable mirroring to a tablet as well as set anchor feature. As soon as the anchor drops, set anchor on the chartplotter, put out your scope yadayada, and set the distance parameter on the anchor alarm i.e. how much drag before the alarm goes off. When you mirror the Chartplotter, you will see your chart on the tablet, including the anchor alarm circle and the parameters. If your other electronics are newer and NMEA 2000 compatible, you can also show your windspeed on the Chartplotter. I put the tablet close to the bed and set my alarm to wake me up at least once an hour (more or less depending on the situation). Every hour I wake up and look at the tablet chartplotter to see if we have dragged. Go back to sleep, rinse repeat. If the anchor is set solid usually it will not move, the biggest risk is if the wind direction changes and unsets the anchor. Our old anchor just wouldn't reset if the wind changed and unset it. Eventually, we got a different anchor sized up from what was recommended for our boat. It has worked really well so far. I know many folks use an anchor alarm app but I like integrating the chart, windspeed, water depth, and alarm in one using NMEA 2000 and casting to my tablet. Just some options! Good luck and welcome to boat life.
@TheBoomershinesКүн бұрын
This is a FANTASTIC suggestion! I didn't realize we could mirror our chart plotter to an ipad but will absolutely figure that out and do that next time we anchor. Thank you!

Maybe it is for the best. Your reaction to minor mishaps, incidents during a voyage, and living on a boat, cruising says all one need to know You are not ready for this life style.It was never meant to be easy. It is supposed to be enjoyable however adventurous. If your break even point of fun and pain crosses over the , “not worth it”…you may as well hang it up. This life style is not for everyone. You have proven that. Not only you were not well prepared for this, neither was your boat. If you have to run the generator to charge your starting batteries says your battery bank is not up to task for live aboard cruising life or you don’t have separate starting batteries for the engines. You will be happier on land.
@TheBoomershines9 күн бұрын
Spoiler alert... we completed the loop and then some. We were very prepared, but no matter how prepared you are, boating throws curve balls and unexpected challenges. As a boater, I am sure you know that too. Some things you just don't know until you have to figure them out. We quickly adopted a motto -- Assess. Adapt. Overcome! And that we did. One leg at a time LOL.
@TheBoomershines9 күн бұрын
Captain Mark chiming in… as an avid boater yourself I am also sure you know of the high high’s, and the low lows of boating. What we present in our videos are both and you witness a transformation from intermediate boaters to much more advanced! In my opinion anyone that hasn’t questioned their choice of “life aboard” isn’t pushing themselves. Mind you we were a crew of a mother, father, and an 8 and 10 year old… by the time we reached Canadian waters and the Great Lakes we had marina staff and lock masters comment that our crew was more prepared and executed our over 140 dockings and 100 locks better than some professional crew they had seen. Like the admiral said… spoiler alert… we finished the Loop and then some…7000 nautical miles on the same propellers is definitely something for a crew to be proud of! ⚓️Capt. Mark PS…the lead time on our new batteries was 6-8 weeks. Tricky while moving almost every day.
@transman94539 күн бұрын
As lifelong boaters my wife and I are enjoying your videos, but I can tell you before we would even take a one week vacation, my priorities would have been new batteries. On our F 32 Trojan I put 4 new batteries in there every 4 years. You were very fortunate that they crapped out at the end but I couldn't sleep at night with bad batteries. I like the headset idea of communicating during docking instead of yelling back and forth.

That’s right! We ended up getting one while up in Canada. Our 12.7 litre MTU Series 60’s took 1100 cold cranking amps so we needed a hefty one. We needed it in the Bahamas, but we don’t want to be a spoiler. You’ll just have to wait for the episode many miles from now. Capt. Mark
@Mrsnichols19659 күн бұрын
I get where you were from a "novice" perspective. But you were kinda concentrating on the negatives. The first proof that your equipment was doing its job was the amount of effort it took to raise the anchor. Second, was the fact that your on board systems were able to charge the starting batteries and you got going again. The only thing it cost you was time. The learning curve is steep, awesome that you made the climb! Great series, and great reality check!

Great catch on the anchor. The capstan on our windlass did not like grabbing our rope and our rope did not like falling into the anchor locker without assistance so I had to quickly figure out a safe workaround. Thankfully, once we got to the chain, everything worked smoothly and as expected -- the windlass grabbed the chain and the chain fell into the anchor locker. Unfortunately, Mark didn't video that part LOL. We got better as we went but this first time was harder than expected. So glad you are liking the series. Thanks for joining the adventure :)

Catching flying kitty diarrhea bare handed is no easy task ma'am. If anyone says it is make them prove it to you because I call shenanigans on that hoopla.
