Ahoy! Welcome aboard for our 4th leg along the Great American Loop. We travel from St Augustine Florida to Fernandina Beach Florida aboard our 56 foot Ocean Alexander. While in Fernandina Beach we get hit by our first windstorm. In hindsight, this windstorm wasn't bad. We endured MUCH MUCH worse later in our Loop. But this storm served as a great "starter storm" to figure out what we needed to add to our boat and what to do prior, during and after a storm. We also ran into OLOH and finally met Tim, AJ & Jasper in person. What a pleasant surprise that was! If you aren't already subscribed to their channel, go check it out... / @oloh

Navajo saying, (If it don't kill you, it will build you). Windstorms make you appreciate the calm... or normal is way underrated.

So true!!! And in hindsight, this one wasn’t that bad. But it was a great one to learn a few things on.

Wow! I live in Bradenton, FL and we have had tons of wind these last two years. So bad we are getting a seawall. If we are blessed to do the loop one day, I think the docking will make me the most nervous! Another great episode, honestly these are such a pleasure to watch! Thank you for all the work it must take to edit all your footage.

And BIG thanks for defending me/us against Bill & Julie J. Apparently, they can dish the criticism but they can't take it because they deleted their comment -- which also deleted the highly entertaining thread that followed in response. I'll never understand trolls but I do feel sorry for them. It has to be a difficult way to spend a life. Thank YOU for spending your precious time spreading compliments, support, and joy :)

Is there an episode where you discuss how you prepared for the loop and prepared how to handle a large 56 foot boat? What prior experience, if any, did you have before doing the loop? I'm enjoying your videos! Very entertaining!

We talk about our prior experience in several previous episodes but there isn't a video dedicated to that. Great suggestion! We will add it to the list of future videos to make. Thanks for watching and for your king comment!

Great video. It looked like that Fleming nicely docked in a narrow space in front of you. Was your kitty talking to the outside birds? Wise choice to stay at the dock. Fernandina looks like a fun place.

The Fleming captain and crew did an EXCELLENT job docking!!! We took lots of notes and gave them a standing ovation when they were all tied up. Such a beautiful boat too. And yes, the kitty was chattering at the birds. We had never seen her do that before, but it became her favorite thing to do on the boat. Thanks for continuing on with us on this adventure. We love having you and really appreciate all your kind comments :)

Fun fact...Fernandina Beach is just across the border from the US sub base at King's Bay Georgia...which is where a large portion of the US Navy's ballistic missile submarines are based...and where a significant portion of the US stockpile of nukes is kept incredibly well guarded. That ship was a Freedom class Littoral Combat Ship, one of 16 that are being built for the US Navy. Some of them are based at Mayport, but the class is generally considered to be a failed project for a variety of reasons, and 5 of the brand new ships have already been retired. They look cool but are relatively lightly armed, and though there are some versions that carry Hellfire surface to surface missiles, they usually only carry surface to air missiles for self defense. I can't wait to see if you folke went through Norfolk...because that is where most of the BIG US Navy ships are home ported.

I knew someone would know what it was! So I was at least correct it launches missiles. Thanks for the great info and yes we definitely went right by and under the bow of some massive hardware in Norfolk! We had a great time there and can’t wait to get to that episode. Thanks for coming along the journey! What do you think the top speed/cruise speed of that beast was?
@iKvetch558
@iKvetch558 20 күн бұрын
@@TheBoomershines The published top speed of the Freedom class ships is 47 knots...cruise is 18 knot, I believe. A lot of times, the US Navy does not divulge the REAL top speed of some types of ships, like subs and aircraft carriers, but the LCS program has been such a public fiasco for the Navy and so much has been divulged and written about the ships that I doubt that there is anything that we do not know about the Freedom class....so it is safe bet they top out at 47 knots.

When recording in the wind remember to stay inside or purchase a better dead cat. Good luck on your journey
@TheBoomershines

That is great advice! However, we don't have a dead cat nor do we want one LOL. But seriously, we are shooting everything on our iPhones and are just happy we got some footage. We simply did not have time to mic up or use our fancy cameras while doing everything else. I hope you can understand and tolerate a little wind noise from time to time.
