Hi , I got Horsetail Rush in Homedepot in a pot but it didn't identify it as "Giant." Horsetail. Can I still get to the full bush look? or do I have to get the "Giant" type in order to get the full bush look? Thank you

The soil should be fine but you will need to add more each year when dividing eventually the plant will use a lot of the mass. We have seen some plants in pots float they have used so much soil after a year or two

I've had a water feature in our backyard for years and had no algae. A few years back I added some river and pond pebbles and had algae since. It's been hair like mossy. I just rake it out by hand and haven't really worried about it but it's a little annoying as it grows fast and needs cleaned out often. We don't have fish but we do have frogs. We don't of course feed them. I've thought about getting some the pool chemicals to get rid of the algae but it really didn't seem a big enough problem. My question would be where did the algae come from? Maybe the pond and river pebbles? Your video answered some questions and I now think I was right to just remove the algae as much as possible and not worry about it.

You added a ton of nutrients to the pond. A pool only needs dust to get algae from the air you added a ton of rocks that leach minerals into the water. Water erodes continually over time you understand that is how canyons are developed stones also erode slowly and leech minerals especially limestone and sandstone.

@@pondmegastore Thanks for the reply. I did think it might have been the rocks. I do like the rocks so probably just clean out the algae every so often. It doesn't turn the water green much.

@@pondmegastore I don't really mind the algae much. Just have to pull it out now and then. It's pretty easy, just comes back after some weeks. Frogs seem to enjoy it. Probably for hiding under.

I was told by the lady I bought some fish from that they need weeds to feed on. I bought some that came in a bunch of ten straws. Do I leave them attached? do I spread them separately? on top of the pond? or do I put them in a pot? thanks for your reply

I am not sure what that is but for large koi fish they will destroy them in an hour , it depends on the size of fish and how many. 12 large carp (koi) can keep one acre devoid of plant life.

I get hair algae in spring before the plants (a giant 3-gallon purple bull rush and an equally big iris) start to grow once they grow, they suck up all the nutrients in water and the algae dies off avoid all chemicals accidentally killed a few fish that way just have a combo fountain, uv light, filter and waterfall filters for intake and top of waterfall I try to rotate cleaning the filters so there is bacteria to break down waste in the uncleaned filter. just rinse out filters and put them back in seems the less i change things the better it works.

Do not go to this company for anything. Don’t bother asking for advice or even being polite. I’m so disgusted by their lack of respect. This video caused me to go to their website excited to find a good pond plant company, or so I thought, as I have looked for pond plants many times over the last 3-4 years. I’m working on a small pond (3’ tall, 5’ wide and 7’ long). Warm weather hit sooner than usual, a major algae bloom hit hard and in one weeks time, before the surrounding shade providers had a chance to grow leaves for the shade. We are preparing to move and I am in process of making everything look great while selling house, plus I love our twelve large FanTail Goldfish and toads. I sent an email inquiring for suggestions for best plants and if they knew how to deal with sludge better aside from added tablets I use. They have so many plants, I have a $200 budget I would like to stick with and was hoping for best impact for faster response creating a healthier pond. Last year the kids and I enjoyed pond walking, and brought home some pieces of plants to grow. The pond was gorgeous and thrived last year! We also got stuck with some sludge leech eggs, thankfully they don’t cause any harm that I can tell. The pond has developed an awesome natural environment drawing in many critters as there is no natural water feature anywhere within a mile of our yard. My Fantails have been producing babies for a couple years too which is fun. It started out as a “winging it” project when I didn’t want to throw the pool in garbage. Instead I bought a pond liner, then surrounded the entire pool, with the gigantic mound of discarded concrete chunks from our neighbors, redoing their driveway. All of it re-purposed, helping the environment, and creating a great educational experience for my kids. My email asked about plants for my particular set up to deal with problem and if they had any suggestions to better manage sludge. I even said, I understood I was asking a lot and no need to reply. It was worth a try to ask and I complimented their videos here. It really wasn’t a very long email, in fact, it was just a couple paragraphs as the kids and I enjoyed sharing with this company our fun pond we created repurposing a children’s pool. Mistakenly, we thought they might actually appreciate hearing from someone that really enjoys creating ponds. Has my children are homeschooled, I also was using the opportunity for them to learn about reaching out to companies to gain help and support when possible. Well the following is their response copy and pasted from email. Just very unnecessarily rude. Obviously the $200 budget I said I was hoping to be enough wasn’t enough money for them to even be polite, let alone make any suggestions, care to gain a new customer, or just not respond if they disliked my very nice complementary email. I am simply trying to improve a small pond I enjoyed creating for fun with my kids out of their old swimming pool to give them a fun experience and so far it’s been a great project for a few years we keep improving. Copy & Paste (no they did not sign a name and the email was just the company one). This is the EXACT email including capitalization. I changed nothing…. “Our WEBSITE is all pond plants, the email is nice but way too long winded. You likely won't want to pay for shipping any plants given where you were going and adding local plants you took and adding leeches. You are welcome to visit the website but you really don't sound like a customer. We have all the education you need there. Kind regards

That is why you would use plants they cannot eat, marginal/shelf plants from the waters surface to just two or three inches below where they cannot dig, also the ones with hard woody rhizomes they cannot eat like papyrus, umbrella palm, sweetflag...

Can you use fluval stratum to plant water lilies? I've been asking around but nobody either seems to know or if they do not answering.
@pondmegastore
@pondmegastore 2 ай бұрын
Well they are heavy feeders and if you want them to bloom properly/profusely which I am guessing is Not the goal yes. If you want lots of flowers plant them properly. They will meander and sustain themselves in that medium but I am not sure you plant to fertilize as I don't think heavy fertilizer would bind and stay there rather than leeching out

I hear if you plant them facing wall of tub, about two inches away from tub wall, then it depends it's energy in making more flowers rather than making tuber. So if you want to make long tuber, plant it away from wall, and if you want more flowers then plant it facing the tub wall. Your inputs please
@pondmegastore
@pondmegastore 2 ай бұрын
No, mention the source for that and how that makes sense. They can perish growing into the wall depending if they curl down and suffocate , if they turn into the wall and retard, or jump the pot and grow out into the bottom of the pond. Please explain what scientific reason they would bloom more growing into the wall.

Thank you but doesn't it matter how much sun your pond is getting? My pond is in full shade so not sure if some of these will work for me.
@pondmegastore
@pondmegastore 3 ай бұрын
The more sun the faster algae would grow, in shade it may be easier to keep algae at bay but all your variables need considered. A pond with 100 koi fed twice daily and a pond with 2 koi never fed in the shade would have drastically different results. Think of a house with one cat or 50. That itself makes a lot of difference in care and mess and quality.

So the psychoactive blue lotus that the Pharaohs in Egypt consumed is no longer available? I watched a video where they chemically analized the blue lotus that was buried with a Pharoah and a modern Blue Lotus and the chemical makup was near identical. One of the psychoactive compounds Apomorphine is prescribed for ED and parkasins.

You missed everything. It is very much still around. 1. It was Never a lotus, it was incorrectly labeled. It has always been a tropical Waterlily. The terms were used Interchangeably before science. 2. What you find being sold today as Caerulea on the Internet are both fake pink lotus seeds with a photoshopped image as no blue lotus ever existed in the first place, so scammers collect pink lotus seeds and sell them to people who don't know blue lotus never existed (blue waterlilies do) and trick people into buying pink lotus seeds as they won't know what they paid for for nearly 6 months when that pink lotus flowers. Or they are selling dried very incorrect tropical Waterlily seed from far deeper blue and far easier to grow tropical water lilies. There are Dark blue viviparous lilies which multiply from lily pads. The fact they are dark blue makes them prettier but the fact viviparous lilies are easier to grow than lilies that only produce seed they choose Psychedelic hybrids to sell. Caerulea is Very Difficult to propagate and sell so it is not a commercial lily. It absolutely exists but you would pay very high amounts and it is so light blue it's not commercially desired. So those wanting tea or live plants are buying easy to grow fake plants which are mislabeled. A few botanical gardens keep the true Caerulea around and trade them and the plants are still found naturally in areas of the Nile and tributaries. The plant has not gone away.

Are all tropical water lilies annuals? I live in Florida in zone 9A.
@pondmegastore
@pondmegastore 3 ай бұрын
Basically, however they can survive underwater as tubers in many instances if starved before winter. They won't always tuber but often will. There are species more inclined to survive as well as their hybrids such as micrantha (and any of their viviparous hybrids) or gracilis hybrids and also many night bloomers.

I just got a stem of this plant. Im in South Florida, i have a back patio where i grow different floaters and aquatic plants for aquariums. Im a little concerned though cus right now we have our silly winter temperatures but nontheless the water in alot of my tubs is around 65°. Should i start it in a pot and put it in a tub where i run a heater to about 78° or just plant and submerge in the ambient temp water?

Note it is not a floating plant. You need to plant that stem in Google heavy dirt, nothing from a bag which is hard to find in S Florida. Silt from the glades is good.
