I don’t think that if the government didn’t want you to know about it you wouldn’t be able to drive directly to it, they would have a security fence with a armed guard or at least cameras, all of the remnants would not be left and the kids wouldn’t be able to tag it. Not to secret. Just saying.

Wow... Please tell us more about that hammock with the screened-in top! Where the hell were those things 50 years ago?? Yeah, and the pool noodle has got to make a huge difference (nod to a prior commenter's comment). Yes, some very interesting lighting. I will check into that link you put in the description. Some nice footage. Memories of splitting wood and making kindling. My Dad taught me how to split wood and make usable kindling. I think it was not long after that he realized just what a monster he had created, as I wanted to spend hours doing it. But hey, I still have ALL of my digits, and toes too. A lumberjack, I definitely am not, but I used to be able to turn a full cord ( or 8 ) into a lot of face cords. I hated it when I was a teenager, but eventually figured out just how great heating with firewood really was.
@OutdoorRob
@OutdoorRob 6 күн бұрын
Thanks Stan! The hammock is just a cheapo I got off Amazon www.amazon.ca/dp/B08R1K8P3H?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details It's not bad but the setup didn't quite work properly for me so I used the pool noodle to hold the screen up and away from me. Otherwise the screen sagged in my face. The side ropes and pegs are supposed to hold the screen out but I'm 230lbs and when I lay in it I pull the pegs out of the ground LOL. Still pretty good I think for 35 bucks. I used to watch my Dad chop the wood out camping, so one time when he wasn't around I grabbed the axe and promptly hit my hand with it LOL! Trip to the hospital for stitches then back to get shit LOL!

Sad to see this. There has been a lot of money spent on this project, and it is an ongoing expense. I think the two buffer pads that she was fixed to the dock by cost 64k back in the day. Plus the refurbishment in Matane PQ, and the tow to TBay, ate up large. I used to be a member of the Toronto Marine Historical Society till I moved. My work at the time, I owned an auto carrier, and I picked up loads of import cars from the docks in Vancouver, and distributed them throughout western Canada, and North Western Ontario for 22 years. One of the members of the Toronto group donated a large Marconi Marine Radio, weighing about 60 lbs, and I brought it up in the truck on my way west. I meet the curator their and he gave me the tour. It was in good condition then, still an ongoing project, but he mentioned the location didn’t make it easy for the public to access. It seemed to me that all the tourists where on the waterfront downtown Port Arthur as is still the case. On a side note, I owned an old fish / logging tug that had an extensive history at the Lakehead. It was one of the tugs in the Great Lakes Pulp and Paper Fleet. The Glen G. She was built in 1909 in Ohio by American Ship Building Co. for Booth Fisheries. ( Chicago ) but ended up surplus in Deluth. She was bought by the Gariock Brothers in Port Arthur in 37, and eventually sold to GLPP in 53. I owned it from 91, till about 2007 ? and believe me it costs a lot of money to keep an old boat a float. Last I saw her was at a tug gathering in Midland a few years ago, and I think it still ties up in Collingwood. She was a beautiful old boat out of the water in the dry dock, and a pleasure to handle. As for the Whalen she was gutted our and freshly painted inside and out. Not much to look at technically, as all the machinery had been removed, so basically it was just a shell, with historical ties to the Lake Head. My tug did sort of have a connection to it in a way. Booth Fisheries ran a steamer called America, that supplied all the fish camps on western Superior ( no roads back in the day ), sometime back in the late 20’s America while making its rounds went up hard on Isle Royale, and sank. I believe the salvage master was Capt James Ried, tried to salvage it before winter, using the James Whalen but ran out of time. when he returned the next spring someone had dynamited America, and she’s still there today. Booth had the fish tug Hollis M. ( later Glen G. ) stand in to pick up the fish from the fish camps till they figured out a long term solution. The Glen G. towed booms back and forth in the Kam River till I believe the late 60’s when towing log booms on the open lake was phased out. Sorry about the long story. Just going by my recollection. I remember you as a member of one of Robert Archers marine internet sights, and had the pleasure to work briefly with Capt Beasley on a large wind turbine project of Kingston Ontario for a season.

@@OutdoorRob thanks for the reply Rob. In my opinion northern Ontario’s history tends to take care of itself in the eyes of people holding the purse strings. Everything made of timber returns to the ground soon enough if left long enough to the elements. Then the expense is the placement of a commemorative plaque. “ This is the site of “, but when it’s made of iron, it outlives its significance in the eye of the public. With a lot of need for budgetary support, these artifacts out live their welcome, and like a bad smell, it gets the attention of a bad smell. Leave it out of the water and put it downtown on the waterfront, and give it a coat of paint every now and then, or make it a dive site. There it can live on, and still be respected. That would be a better ending than seeing Lakehead history meeting its end with a cutting torch.
