Man it really has changed I was there in the 90s it was hell from 95 to 98 I was on Willow Lane Birchwood second John g last I went to SMU, Santee then they moved some of us too cca and wilderness camps I've been too r&e for juveniles broad river road Columbia SC it was hell but it makes you stronger the children that's there now got it easy because it didn't look like that when I was there it changed real fast all I can say is hold your head up and do the right thing I wish I could be a speaker and come talk to the children frfr

Sadly, the reality of working in such a place is probably NOT as depicted in this very nice presentational promotional video. I really don`t mean that in a derogatory sense either. The staff of DJJ are obviously engaged in this work for the right reasons and really do want to change the direction of the lives of the young people that they are there to serve. The US incarcerates more people per capita than any other industrialized nation with overcrowding and environmental stresses unfairly endured by both staff and the young offenders. Further, the US judicial system seem to be very punitive and does very little to help those make better life choices which, in turn, is directly the fault of the judicial system either but something far more multilayered and complex.

I’d like to think DJJ helped me. It took 7 trips “down the road” but after my last one, I haven’t been back. Nothing as an adult. It took me from the time I was 14 until I was 17 to learn but it finally got through.

That place is the worst of the 3 “evaluation centers” for sure. Then the one in Columbia(midlands) The upstate one in Union isn’t all that bad. Or is wasn’t 15-20 years ago. I mean...it wasn’t fun, but since I’ve been to all 3 of them...I know which is the worst. Kids, stay out of trouble!
