@@panders55 did you have a turbo on it? Ever have any problems with the power shift? I’ve heard they’re pretty tough.

@@rustyoldjunk No, she was straight air induction, the power shift would heat up a little more than it should in 100 degree weather, so just dropped it down 1 grear and that helped. At about 11000 hors on the block and 2 overhauls the motor gave up. Then man I had worked for took an engine from a 105 J D Combine and put it in there and had the Power shift gone threw. His son and grandson still use it occasionally.

The tractor and planter belong to my dad, kind of his retirement purchase I guess. Hydrostatic works really well for mowing hay and on that little planter. He pulls a 3 bottom plow too. Always love the G, finally got an early one, One of the first 400 built in 37, Saved it from the scrappers when I was in college, sitting in an Allis dealer's back lot. It was under a big thorn bush, just barely visible. I knew of it for a few years, thought it was an A as could barely see it. Then when I saw that they were clearing that lot for a new building, I took a chance and bought it almost unseen! Found out it was a G when they pulled it out of the brush to load it for me. Was missing the top end of the motor, so it sat in our hopeful pile for a time. My son loved to play farm on it when he was little. I've finally found enough parts to complete it. now just need to get going on it again. It still has the original small radiator on it, makes a bit rare, as most were recalled and updated back in the day. Don't know how long it sat in the dealers lot, but likely since the late 50s. Being it was missing the motor parts and the tires, I suspect they sold off those parts. The dealers dad told me that it was brought in for repairs but when told how much it needed, they bought a different tractor. I've owned it since 1975, but it sure has gotten many hours of kid use over the years. It's well earned it's keep for us!

That is a cool story. I’d like to have a low radiator G some day, or at least an unstyled one. Do you subscribe to Green Magazine or Two Cylinder Club? There’s a lot of aftermarket vendors advertised, they’d probably like hearing your story too. Who would trade a G for an allis??? Lol. Good luck with your project.

Hi there, Just a suggestion, when you lap valves using a drill, attach the chuck to the shaft at the collet end rather than the seat end, much easier and consistent, you only need to be able to lift it enough to allow grinding paste to fit and to allow the paste to centralise on the seat every so often. I understand you just wanted it to run, but as an experienced mechanic, if I was going that far I'd rebuild the head properly. Do it once and never need to touch it again. 👍 Glad you got this amazing old JD running against, love these old machines, they'll outlast many lifetimes.

Hey mike, a couple of tips for you. It's not 'synergetic', it's 'synergic'. Plus, when MIG welding with shielding gas, you push, don't pull...
@rustyoldjunk
@rustyoldjunk 8 ай бұрын
Ah ya as I mentioned I am no welder. But I seem to remember “If there’s slag, you drag” now that u mention it. What does “synergic” mean anyway? I know it has to do with automatically setting the wire speed with the heat, and I’ve learned that it seems to work better to use that mode with flux core. Another thing, I found out tips are available at the local farm store.
@AXNJXN1
@AXNJXN1 8 ай бұрын
@@rustyoldjunk It means 'coacting'/ collaborating and simply 'working together'. The word 'synergetic' does exist but welder companies are using the word synergic per se, espousing the point of 'working with the weld conditions to 'adjust' them slightly (electrically). It's done through the electronic fields and resonance/modulation as I was mutually explained. But anyways, it does seem to have a better effect on some welders than others. I've honestly never tried that with FC so you convinced me to try that and see what effect if any it has with my ArcCaptain too. Cheers!
