@Afrifama
@Afrifama 6 күн бұрын
@@Jordanvibs that's a good question actually. I did something interesting recently which made me think in this particular line of thoughts. When my birds were 28 days old, unfortunately I ran out of commercial pellets and didn't have cash at the time. Since I am already making feeds for my normal birds I decided why not do the same for broilers. To cut the story, I fed them mash feed for at least a week and I monitored their weight. It was perfect. Now, which is the best feed? Honestly I need to do a pilot program for the mash since day 1 then will share the results. For now, just use the recommended pellets for uniform growth.

That's how weeds are disturbing us Whites brought axaliscorniculata as flower Latana Camara that has destroyed live fence now has covered and destroyed our national park and farms in Africa Water hyacinth has destroyed our fresh water lakes in East Africa I won't recommend spreading weed as feeds The cost of controlling it is high once it reaches our lakes rivers and wetlands There are other alternatives than this weed Who bewitched Africa
@Afrifama
@Afrifama 18 күн бұрын
While everyone is entitled to have a stand and believe, that's why we agree to disagree and on azolla I disagree with you. You seem to be highly opiniated on why weeds (water hyacinth among others) have detrimental effect, while you are right on that, you entirely missed the point. I am talking about azolla and for your reference its an alternative means of feeding (protein source) especially for small scale poultry farmers. No, Africa is not bewitched, we simply have young curious minds who are willing to test theories, innovative, learn and grow.
@Afrifama
@Afrifama 18 күн бұрын
On a second note, Thank you for sharing your concerns. I understand the worry about introducing species that can become invasive, as we've seen with plants like Lantana camara and water hyacinth. However, Azolla has several qualities that differentiate it from those examples: Controlled Environment: Azolla can be grown in a controlled environment, such as lined ponds, which minimizes the risk of it spreading to unintended areas. Biodegradable and Non-Toxic: Azolla is a biodegradable plant that does not produce toxins harmful to other plants or animals. Nutrient-Rich Feed: It's a highly nutritious feed for livestock, poultry, and fish, which can reduce reliance on expensive commercial feeds and improve food security. I agree that it's crucial to be mindful of potential ecological impacts. We can mitigate the risks by implementing strict management practices and educating farmers about proper cultivation techniques. Ongoing research and local trials can help us better understand and manage its growth.

Wont the water stink after sometime?
@Afrifama
@Afrifama 29 күн бұрын
Under normal conditions, an Azolla pond should not produce a strong or unpleasant odor. However, if certain issues arise, such as stagnant water, decaying organic matter, or nutrient imbalances, the pond water might start to smell. You can solve this by regularly remove decaying plant, Monitor nutrient levels, Use clean, non-chlorinated water etc.

@Afrifama
@Afrifama 29 күн бұрын
Ideally I would say there is lack of nutrients and as Farirai has advised, - Regularly add organic fertilizers such as cow dung slurry or compost to maintain nutrient levels. - You should also avoid much direct sunlight can cause the water temperature to rise and inhibit growth. With those two covered you will be well to go.
@Vethub11
@Vethub11 Ай бұрын
Nice work friend. The problem with spreading the manure into the water is that when you harvest the azola you pick with the chicken dropping floating on the surface of water. Next time put the manure into a porous sack then place them on the four corners, you can also put one in the middle. The manure will be sipping from the sack and mixing in the water, stir the water slowly for even spread. This mtd also prevent water from being too mucky. Stepping into the pond can also make holes in the lining leading to water loss, I used to tie a pole on the basin that I was using to collect the weeds, also after harvesting rinse the harvested weed with water and recycle the water I to the pond as it has manure.. I love your work sir

@Afrifama
@Afrifama Ай бұрын
Hello Lucy, Based on my experience there are three ways I use to ensure the litter is dry; 1. Put enough litter during the brooding stage, this is essential for the next step. 2. Always turn your litter in the morning probably 2-3 days in the morning, it ensure the wet litter on top is mixed with the dry on the bottom. 3. Lastly, I usually change my litter on day 18 of brooding. This is usually when I notice the presence of ammonia. NB: The first two can be effective if you don't have a big flock.
