Could you not have a UNUN that connects to your transceiver in the roofspace and a wire that comes from the Antenna connection on the UNUN through a tiny hole in the facia board then to a pole at the bottom of the garden which should work or what about having a look at W5JGV and seeing if you can use one of the trees in your area as an Antenna.

I'm a new Ham. How do you connect a loop antenna to the coax, do both ends connect to the inner coax conductor, or one to the inner and one to the outer conductor? And is a balun used? Thanks, and great video.

I put a galvanised wire, for electic fences, around my attic. Unfortunately, it made my noise floor higher. It come from the back of my SDR with the device grounded to the ground lead in the AC outlet. The results disappointed me for noise. The signal levels went way up. But, the noise levels also went up proportionally. I am enjoying a lot more signal, but a lot more noise. As for transmit, I can only transmit on license free bands. I am not an amateur radio operator.

I once had an X-ray transformer that looked like that. Though I was a bit shorter methinks. It was also full of oil with absolutely no warning about how dangerous said oil was. 🙂

DO NOT keep the unused coax cable rolled - it will choke your signal and create all sorts of transmissions an SWR issues! Simply spread it a 90 degree between the antenna and your radio. Also, do not cross the coax with your counterpoise/radials.

Do you have source for this info please? Strange that manufacturers sell their coax cable on drums......

@Chameleon_Antenna I keep the choke and feedline elevated out of rain and other mixed conditions by keeping it on the spool, and cover the spool connections from the inclement weather. In tight conditions like on trails I apply push-on PL-259s in case someone tracks over the feedline. It protects both the antenna and radio. I guess moving forward I will carry a 15 foot feedline for those conditions. Utility flags are feedline's best friends, but some people still walk on them.. Where we activated in this video sure enough we had a group of kids come over near the antenna even though we were attempting to deploy away from foot traffic. POTA always presents operating conditions outside your control. Cable companies offered advice to spool to extend feedline lifespan and minimize damage on the storage of the lines. Going forward when deploying my 50' cable I will take your advice of fully extended 90 degree runs. We appreciate your input in our quest to be better field operators!

G'day Roly, thanks for making this video mate. What a total blast. I couldn't believe it on my tape measure antenna having a DX pile up - and getting a "paaaak to paaaak" in ZL. I'll be back in Oz mid March. Hope to hear you on the radio. Woohooo! POTA ON

Is this a listen only loop or is it tuned to transmit on?
@ZL1BQDRoly
@ZL1BQDRoly 6 ай бұрын
Yes, for listen only. It could be made for transmit but the components would have to be "beefed up" to cope. Primarily for listen though simply to beat the noise as much as possible.

Hi Roly I am new to your channel, but I have heard of the famous Roly whilst watching both Mike and Calum’s channels. Recently purchased 12.4m DX Commander pole to use for experiments with vertical antenna’s. The Roly coil will be one of the first. However don’t have the lathe facility and will adopt the Mike hot glue method. I’ll report back what success I have. With regards to your video, I really enjoyed the entirety, good pace lots of visuals good conclusion supported with facts. Best regards Steve. 🎉🎉🎉

Do you know...can one switch the 30m element out and just run another 40m in it's place with this coil at the bottom so as to not have to switch the connection back & forth with the previous 40? Or will the 40's interfere with each other? If with them touching/overlapping each other at the top causes a problem, would another option possibly be to use the 30 holes on the commander or signature 9, but only run the new 40 to the top spanner and fold down over the outside of the spanner from there & back down in manner like the first 40 and put the coil on the bottom for this 40? Thoughts?

Tried this at my QTH. It reduced the noise but also removed the wanted signals. S9 became S7. Well I could hear and work them with or without noise. The stations replying to my CQ that are sitting on the edge of the noise are taken away also. SN ratio is all good but not much use if the wanted signal is also taken away.
