If you look at how GW is changing the Combat Patrol box sets, they are preparing Combat Patrol for a Spearhead like makeover. If you buy the game from GW you get the double sided tokens.

Game looks nice, but I had to cone and check your video to help me grasp the rules 😅

As a counterplay, it is very important when placing objectives that they don't get 3 objectives on their side. You can usually prevent that in the following way: if SG wins rolloff, longboard them and put your 2nd token in no-ones territory. This usually prohibits that 3 objectives end up at SG side (it is mostly 2 on their side and 1 in no-one). If counter player wins the rolloff and SG doesn't longboard you, then put a token in the middle, near no-one territory. That leaves space for the other 2 tokens which ends up with 3 tokens on your side. It doesn't win you the game automatically, but it helps.

Only thing I'd add for new players is something on deployment. I like to deploy as follows: Sepulchural Warden as far from the enemy as possible. Petitioners in the middle of my board, preferably within 2 of Objectives. Champion, Harvester and Prince up front. I want these guys to absorb hits with their 3 wounds. Also, when I raise them their stats are better. Unlike the majority I play these guys as a Flex warband as this is my preferred playstyle, but these setup principles should stand however you play them.

I really want to get them, but they're hard to get my hands on for a reasonable price...

They are great. If you want to play them, they will die a lot, they will bleed the glory, but all you have to do is raise them back and score faster then your opponent. If there is anything else to do, then don't attack with them. Get to objectives instead. Fight only if you need to kick off opponent's warrior from the objective. Actually, I think the best deck for them is Fearsome Fortress at the moment, even better than the ones you mentioned. But, Malevolent Masks are close behind. Their weak spot is the Warden. If you play against them, then simple do not kill the other models. You can wound them on your way to the Warden (e.g. take 2 wounds from Champ or Prince), but do not finish them. Instead, get through them to the Warden and kill her first. Ideally, you have some tricks to do that, eg. Gryselle's Arenai or Skaven move very fast, or Leona gives flying trait to the whole Stormcoven warband, to help get through the skeleton wall.

Sepulchral guard .. the only unit from underworld brought to AoS and forbidden to play GW tournaments even having AoS 4ules by official FAQ at the beginning ^^

What I learned about them is leave them to Aaron and Pete and stop trying to be good with them :P

Also if 40k is anything to go by, they may replace all the Vanguard boxes with new Spearhead boxes. The Vanguard ones should still have rules, but who knows in say 5th edition. Good watch!

Great review! Clear and concise! Just bought this, yet to play but it looks great. I own War of the Ring (board game) as well as Reiner Knizia’s Lord of the Rings with all expansions but have always wanted an LOTR game that’s quick to set up. This card game looks like it hits the spot! Artwork is fabulous, richly thematic and ‘feels’ like Lord of the Rings….. I quite agree about the LOTR LCG - very disappointed, didn’t pull me into the ip and boils down to a maths puzzle which requires lots of £££ to expand and get into. This game looks very replayable with just the base set 😊

Have been watching more about Spearhead this week. First: huge fail on GW’s part for not getting ahead of this more, the player base is learning about it too late to get in on pre-orders. Second: I see lots of interesting, appealing elements here. Seems like a hybrid of standard AoS and Underworlds. IgoUgo still a thing, which I don’t care for, but in this system it seems to work with the interrupt and underdog mechanics built in.

A shame the box is the soft cardboard and not the hard cardboard of Leviathan, Dominion etc. I'm sure that's helped keep the cost down, but a real shame.

Remember this isn't a starter box it's the new edition launch box. And it is a great set for those of us already into the game. The new starter boxes will probably be announced next month and split this box into 2 or 3 boxes that will have beginner scenarios, dice and rulers, it's what they have been doing for the last few years.

My objectively unfounded reservation about spearhead is the difference in statlines you mentioned behind it and AOS 'proper', but a 2000 point game is such a faff to set up and have space for we only play a few times a year anyway, the board size and game length has me sold. The other irksome thing is the fixed format means despite having seven AOS armies of various sizes in the house we only have units for two complete Spearheads - and neither of them is mine!

Not THE best, but i liked Zarshia from Khagra's Ravageurs. Khagra, as a tanky leader, is likely to die in hand to hand combat. Later you can use a card to make Zarshia the new leader with +1 to health and +1 magic lvl.

Played my first game tonight with my non-gamer wife... Had a blast! Good little game with surprising strategic depth.

Skabbik, the leader, is a priest. And you can make another one Pirest and leader, if your leader gets killed. And since there are upgrade that are only valid on Priests in their faction deck, I very much care about it! :D
