Getting starting boxes with 1 complete army is genius. 1. Lets be honest, you never 'give' the other halve away. 2. Rarely do you want both armies. Remember 'AoS Feast of Bones? I wanted the Ossiarch Bonereapers, my ogres on spru are still colecting dust. 3. You get to start (or restart) with enough points to get you going, with a nice new dragon (for TK) and can build you army to toornament 2k points yourselve. About nothing of that box is waisted in my opinion. 4. Even I can now stay focused on painting my army before anything else. With 2 in the starter, I get tons of excuses to myselve for doing yet again, something else, finishing nothing. 5. What about NO to splitting the box because... Who gets the rulebook? Or the dice (now important bacause scatter dice)? And if you do not like either army, well, then start with wathever you want I guess. But my army, my special troop ain't here now??? No problem, we waited for 10 years, you can wait a little longer because you are special, or the orks and dwarves come out next...

@gstellar96 I've not seen them in person, but they do look nice. But model appreciation is both subjective and irrelevant to my point. I've not played Conquest, so I could not and would not use it as an example when giving my opinion on Warlords of Erehwon, which I also haven't played and would be doing a disservice to if I did. I have reservations about some of what ToW has done with the game, but I've played it and know that it is both fun and feels like warhammer fantasy. 6th, 7th, and 8th had problems, too, and since nothing is perfect, I doubt a perfect game exists regardless of who made it.

Warhammer Fantasy or Old World was/is a strategic wargame where armybuilding skills are important. versus AoS is a tactical squad/platoon level game with a strategic element in when to drop your command points and getting your army painted to demon slayer sword level is more inmportant than building your own army. I'm an oldschool player, started in 1990, I'm glad it is back. Tomb Kings all the way for me.

TOW is catering to a whole bunch of people who love miniature wargaming and either don’t love the AoS setting, or the game itself (I don’t love either but believe me that I’ve really tried to :*( ). To me, TOW setting is simply way more evocative. Add to that the fact that everyone’s praising the new rules rewrite and I’m all in. I never played WFB (was too young), but very much looking forward to jumping in head first :) Also, I got lots of Ironjawz that will finally get some play! Woo!
@britainbetterthanyou
@britainbetterthanyou 5 ай бұрын
Who is praising the "new" rules? I've seen no one who isn't' biased and grew up on the classic WFB rules (which killed the game in the first place note) praise it. I've seen critical praise for Kings of War, Conquest, Game of Thrones: none for Old World. Warhammer Fantasy died for three reasons: overly complex (but not intelligent) ruleset that should have been cut down to 20 pages but somehow is MORE in The Old World; price; lack of support (i.e. new plastic kits released on par with 40K's offerings). GW have repeated all three mistakes. The game is dead on arrival. That the limited copies they made sold out quickly during a period where GW have massive stock and production issues means nothing.
@Morrodin182
@Morrodin182 5 ай бұрын
@@britainbetterthanyou It is hard to REALLY estimate if it is dead on arrival but it is very possible that the amount of available boxes was really low so GW could 'guarantee' (or almost) that it would sell out. This drives the idea that TOW is having a great launch which might lure in extra players. Personally I am totally not invested in TOW, but I only got into Warhammer in 2021. So, I have no special feeling about WHFB.

The hype hits reality - will be the actual rules and game play. I have moved on to some historical games (including rank-flank), so I can deal with rule crunch (although there are lots of streamlined and innovative new designs that play quick as well) - but in general these older historical designed rulesets can be hard to sell, if you are just starting out or used to modern styled games. As you correctly stated, there is nothing innovative here but they have combined some of the better aspects of some edition and GW games. The fluff and hype might be enough to overcome it at first and then I think people are going to hit the next hurdle - competitive Old World. Maybe the community will do enough to balance the game and of course people don't have to play competitively (these big bulky designs often work better in a more collaborative, narrative and beer & pretzel context).

You can still get ahold of it if you want to. And I'm very much yay. I found it hard to get into AoS as much as I enjoy the game on the face of it. And let's be honest this happened because of the commercial success of Total War Warhammer. Much like there is room for Heresy besides 40k there is room for fantasy battle besides AoS. Because not everyone enjoys the over simplification of rules from current 40k and AoS

ToW is a bunch of largely irrelevant list building minutia and keyword rules bloat to detract from its relatively simple actual gameplay. I don't accept its legitimately more complex in any actual positive way. Many of its systems are broken in application and end up worsening the game compared to more stream lined approaches. I'm convinced what looks like its apparent success is coming from them sending out a ton of free product for promotion combined with a large audience of people who want fantasy as an ip but never even looked at aos due to a non stop chorus of bad press coming from salty whfb gatekeepers the last decade.

Make a rulebook with rules and lore and call it The Rule Book Collectors Edition, pre-orders up for 2 weeks, and everyone with a pre-order gets a copy. When gone, is gone. Make another rulebook, paperback, in A5 format and call it a Rule Book. Normal pre-orders and keep in stock. Around a 20€ price difference between the two books and watch money pouring.

The rules I noticed that they added were drawn from historical wargaming, including Warhammer / Warmaster Ancients, and from Middle Earth SBG. I did like the crunch of WFB / Old World; I just rather play this type of warfare at a smaller scale (10-15 mm models, as was done in Warmaster; or 6-8 mm like with Epic / Legions Imperialis).

The rules only really work if you assume each base is 10-30 troops per "model". It's arsine and primitive to still have wheeling in a 2024 rank-and-flank game which, even at say 3000 points, is still a skirmish level game between 100 or so soldiers. Not 100,000s.

My question is who is this game for - it's done away with the traditional starter sets it used to have. I've seen gaming channel bloating the game again to what original killed it (although some channels have scaled back the armies to almost 4/5th Ed sizes. I saw on Batrap and the hero's were equipped with loads of magic items and they criticised 4th and 5th Ed - rolls eyes. I mean nobody has ever said you cannot play the out of date eds I still play 4th and 5th Ed and prefer it over the later versions of the game. Then there are the competitive Meta gamers who (not all) sucked the fun, humour out if the game with Meta lists and condescending attitudes to newer players who either enjoy using different units or army set ups. I don't care about the stats and the Meta I just want to play a game have a laugh regardless on how amazing a unit is or not. I also found that many of the Competitive gamers there armies were just all carbon copies and got really boring to play against seeing the same troops the same tactics - I was never a competitive player tried it once in 7th Ed and it wasn't for me lol. But there were some great players but there were too many that were not.

Lets not forget that it was they who strung us along through 8 editions of our game, then killed our game, discontinued our models, then kicked our entire community to the curb. The pre-sales? It's unlikely GW made that many boxes so of course it's sold out. Like the new Epic game that sold out quickly but... hardly anyone is playing it. Some stores got 3-4 boxes of Old World (each kit) to sell.. of course it sold out. Doesn't mean it's popular. There will be very few new players coming to The Old World. Which is a shame, but probably by design. Old World is not designed to "bring back Warhammer" as much as to fleece the older WFB whales who won't be interested in a few more years due to age and life commitments. Gonna get them asap. It's certainly not designed to entertain those 10,000s and 10,000s of Total War fans who will take one look at the models, prices and rules and walk away. If you don't attack GW on price and moan then GW will never learn. If you're not attacking GW on the price then that means less people entering the hobby. GW isn't an expensive hobby, it's quite cheap if you look at the alternatives, but GW choose to make it expensive: and there was a sweet spot of 3-4 years just as AoS dropped when it WASNT' expensive, GW made it very affordable before reverting back to their old - disgusting - ways and hitting you with multiple price hikes every year, as was the norm in the 2000s.

I don’t think GW have been any different with how they’ve handle pricing over the last decade or so. And there’s no point “attacking” them, the best way is to vote with your wallet and not buy. On the other hand, I bought the ultimate starter for 40K instead of the Leviathan box set. one of the reasons is because it contains a rules only rulebook which is much handier as reference during a game. In an ideal world GW would always give you both options imho. One book with all the fluff for a bit more money or a cheaper rules only book.
