I have about 3 weeks until mine (ToledoPD) and the I kill the sit-ups but the push ups got me sliding down every wall I see😂😂😂

Police academies generally have high fitness standards for graduating from the academy. They also have a minimum shooting qualification standard as well. However, once officers graduate there are usually no physical fitness standards. And some departments have an easy range qualification only once a year. So, officers need to have their own fitness program and they need to go to the range often on their own. The officer in this case did not have good cardio. Foot chases are common. So, fitness is important. Otherwise officers can be easily overpowered by violent suspects. The suspect in this case was insane and was running around with a gun in a residential neighborhood. Shooting the suspect was justified because the officer could not let the suspect endanger citizens like he was. But the officer fired a number of shots and missed the suspect every time. Therefore each round fired was a danger to citizens in the backdrop.

I agree with all of your points. But besides that, his voice also showed a lot of stress in that initial confrontation which was before he started the footchase over the fence and well before he fired shots. Having heard that sound many times on the radio when I was on the job, it is a sign of high stress. I'm a little surprised that a Toledo officer with 8 years of experience hasn't seen something like this before. It's not all that uncommon, even in smaller cities and towns such as where I worked. I hope he goes through a lot more reality-based training (virtual video, simunition, etc). Regular training in this area will help him out a lot but so will this incident. I say this all not to ridicule, but in the hope that he learns from this. I suspect that @wtjonesphd9375 feels the same way. Better fitness and better training makes the job a little easier to do.

As a marine thinking of joining the sheriffs office, watching the drill from the officers, I wanted to put my drill hat on and scream at them for doing shit very sloppy. I’m starting to not want to go. I will end up screaming at an officer to fix himself lmaooo

Looks like what the Army turned into by the time I got out (2017). A sloppy, undisciplined shell of what it was when I joined (2005). I was an infantryman, so at the unit level, combat arms units were still mostly squared away, but the Army as a whole, yeesh. And the new senior leaders seem to have no interest in fixing it.

I guess your policy is going to change in regards to having your officers blindly trusting your license plate readers? A simple 10 second verification by one of the 3 officers on scene while waiting for the driver to exit the vehicle would have saved us taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars of what is a "slam-dunk" lawsuit for excessive force!!

It varies between academy’s, some mandate that you stay there at all times, some mandate you stay there except weekends, and some let you commute from home. Sometimes it can also depend on how far you live from the academy.

Columbus PD made us break the plain (past knees with elbows) for our sit ups. My first PT test i took on my 28th sit up my fingers came apart, and i failed by 1. 2 weeks later took the test again and passed with 32 with no issue.

Wow. 4 years later, most police officers wear a 5x uniform, and get winded just getting out of their car and walking up to the car they pull over. This type of test is probably just the one they initially have to pass, because there are a way too many obese officers out there that could never pass any type of PHYSICAL performance test.

Would love to be a cop. But sorry there's no way I'm going to sit through a ridiculous academy after 12 years in the military. Im not the only vet that feels this way. There needs to be a waiver to slip the nonsense and just learn the job.

I’ve done both. You have to look at it for what it is, which is simply the price for admission, unless you are already a cop and want to lateral, in which case you can often take an abbreviated class. Also, keep in mind that there’s no universal standard in the US. Academies can be as low as 8 weeks, although the average is between 700-800 hours. Some academies you are there the whole time. Some, you go home every night. You can always shop around. Your branch of the armed forces built the product they wanted. The police, while paramilitary in nature, want a slightly different product.
