I don't know if "adding mass" is exactly the right term for what is happening, I think because brass is a denser and more resonant material, it activates with the shell and then draws out that sustain. Adding mass is part of it for sure, but like...it's essentially bleeding more out of the shell by acting as a hybrid shell material. I do notice that the drums start to sound bogged down when there are too many wings. I dunno, these are pretty weird. I kinda wanna try now.

Difference is too subtle and probably not noticeable in a mix. Seems like a gimmick and a complete waste of money. Want different tone, change your heads. Want less sustain, stretch out some cotton balls and put them inside the toms.

I'm not even a drummer (guitarist, vocalist), but I've been a big fan of Sleep Token for 4-5 years and love their sound. I always have to program my drums when doing recordings for my solo stuff. I wonder how easy it would be to reproduce a similar sound to ii for someone purely doing production and programming drums. My current go-to for drum sounds is the GGD P IV Matt Halpern pack.

So i have to spend more money, put even more work to take out the heads, screws, install the ears, put the screws back on, put the heads and rims back, tune it again, then i need to carry extra weight on gigs on an already hefty piece of kit and then get them mixed by a FOH dude who barely knows what he`s doing or mix them in a song where just a slight shift on the EQ erases all "resonance". No thank you, i`d rather take my girl out with those money, or get a fresh set of heads.

Could the purpose of the tonewings is to give the drum a wider range. Like make the drum sound better in a lower tuning? You tuned the drums identically so I think no matter what it’s gonna sound similar but maybe the extra weight would give the drum more control at lower or higher tunes where without it it’ll be out of control

Tone? Well when you start with dead sounding drums and then add mass they sound more dead! Just my opinion but there wasn't enough sustain to provide a discernible tone in the first place. I guess I'm used to playing very resonant drums, Gretsch Reown maple unmuffled with Evans UV2 baaaaaaoooòoh! Now thats Tone baby!
@EliGreenDrums
@EliGreenDrums 3 күн бұрын
The drums certainly aren’t dead. I feel like there’s a big misconception around resonance being the most desirable thing in a drum, especially in a studio environment. Sustain and tone are two difference things. Don’t get me wrong, I’m down for some singing drums and open tunings from time to time, but most often in a modern environment, its too much.

I think the wings are horrible. No offense but I have to add I don't care for you tuning either. I admit it's the current trend in tuning but it's more about engineers, producers and DAW than about the drums. You demonstrated it with the over compressed recording. More to this but I'll leave it at that. The A-B test was easy to hear the difference. If you have the capability watch the result on a spectrum analyzer and see what frequencies are being effected and choked. It would be interesting to know if the effect is random or systematic and if the effect is consistent from drum to drum. It would also be interesting to know what the effect is in a large hall. Could you actually be killing frequencies you need and driving the sound person nuts at trying to get a good sound that the drums themselves are preventing?
@EliGreenDrums
@EliGreenDrums 3 күн бұрын
What tuning trend is that? I think most people just dump their heads and muffle the crap out of them these days. These are at least tuned medium low with minimal muffling. Curious to know what you’d rather hear. I agree it would be good to be able to measure any systematic change but I think you’d need to record a much wider pool of drums to be able to draw any specific outcomes. I think what this test reveals is the consistent general effects that the product has. If you’d like to delve further, be my guest. But I will say, I think a large hall would make it even harder to tell any meaningful difference as you are increasing the room’s influence on the overall sound. My room is fairly small and not overly reflective, I think smaller differences are more obvious in a room like that. I often throw some mics out in the next room of the studio which has more of that large-hall sound, and while it sounds very cool, it’s too large of a space to feel any tangible detail for a test like this.
@dnczardnczar
@dnczardnczar 2 күн бұрын
@@EliGreenDrums First off, there is nothing wrong or bad about your tuning. It's just that it's a tuning I don't care for and the wings made it worse. It's just my opinion though. Consider this: Isolation or suspension mounts, snare stands and all the thought and research that went in to the trend and Wings come along to defeat the purpose of all that with a metal strip screwed across the shell. I'm just guessing here about what you're hearing but sustain doesn't sound much effected but shell resonance sure is. Tuning trends. I'm almost 70 and there is way too much about this to go in to. Go back and listen to recordings over the years to hear the trends. For my tuning preference I'll give you an example. Some insight though: This is rounded bearing edges with heavy COB, (chrome over brass) inward cast rims, not triple flange. Trend? Gretsch has brought this back although I don't think they've gone to brass yet. The next iteration maybe? Remo coated Ambassador over Diplomats. Most importantly though, the drums are tuned. Not the heads. DW should have stuck to their Hayman roots. Listen to this with headphones and notice how the drum resonance cuts through and the sensitivity of the snare is always there. It's not a clone of a marching drum's dead snap. LOL, another trend. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJeYeKRosbyvd2w.html

This is fascinating. I somehow got the blind test right, but only on the raw/unmixed examples (?) Probably only because I kinda knew what I was listening for: If you've ever had any experience with the Steinway bell on their grand pianos - these seem to do a similar thing to the tone, but much more subtle. It's easy to get lost throwing around nebulous adjectives, but there's something in the upper midrange; a sort of added detail that might not even be present in the drum to begin with. Thanks for the video!

I'm not at the studio rn but it's clear that the biggest difference was between no wings and 1 wing per shell. And that was a difference I certainly liked, esp on the snare drum, giving it a very nice attack characteristics and clearing up some messy resonances in the low freq, making them fade sooner, thus paving the way to bring out a nice sound of the body with compression down the line
@EliGreenDrums

I picked A. Love the analysis cousin! Very scientific approach. I also appreciate the reference to the psychological component of confirmation bias and placebo effect. Is a tone wing inside the drum much different from attaching hardware outside?

Thanks cuz! I reckon there’s a tonne of placebo and confirmation bias out there in gear testing. Trying to keep it honest! I think it would have helped to do an A/B comparison of each individual shell in addition to the whole kit. I’m sure that would have added even more time to produce what I’m assuming was already a lengthy recording process for this video though haha I did hear a very mild difference though. On first listening I kind of preferred B, but I tried cutting back and forth between the two processed sounds and A does sound a little more polished for a mix. I think it’d be interesting to hear the two in the context of a full mix with guitars and bass. I wonder if maybe your kit just didn’t need them as much and they’d make a bigger difference on a lesser kit that needs more treatment. Either way, they seem like a final 5% kind of thing for studio recording more than something your average drummer should consider spending money on. It’d be like buying an expensive boutique pedal maker’s take on a tubescreamer when the original is likely good enough
@EliGreenDrums
@EliGreenDrums 4 күн бұрын
You’re 100% right on all of that. I thought about doing a recap of the individual shells as well, to better hear the small nuances, but it would have really stretched the video out even further. Also agree with what you stated about my kit not needing as much “fixing” as such. I’d be curious to try them on a more mid-range set to see if it has a more noticeable effect.

Well done for having the patience and courage to spend a whole day to make this video. It must have been incredibly tedious. Thanks for doing it so we don’t have to. As for the the product itself, if I had a drum so “problematic” that I couldn’t resolve it with standard tuning and muffling techniques, and I have to spend money to make it sound how I like on a product like this, then it’s throwing good money at a bad thing. I’d rather just get a different drum altogether if the normal approach still can’t get me a decent sound. The only real obvious difference was on that piccolo snare, but I’m sure traditional dampening techniques would have got you equally varied sounds and they could be installed and removed very quickly.

You do realise the hoop has more to do with the drum staying in tune than the head? The tension rods detune from the vibration more than anything else. Especially under rimshots. Also worth noting I have an Evans head set on a piccolo snare right now (it’s even fitted with triple flanges) and it detunes just as fast as anything else.
