They walk like this ALWAYS not just when looking for food...since scientists don't actually KNOW why they do it, my guess is it's to test the ground for sure footing as they go. They naturally live in bogs and marshes, where "quicksand" (mud) is not uncommon. So it makes perfect sense that they'd test each step before fully committing their weight.
