Just a note for new players: the Stardrop Saloon has a limited dish of the day at the end of the menu every day, and if you find a good buff food like Pumpkin Soup, Spicy Eel, Crab Cake, or Lucky Lunch, better buy all Gus is selling. Some foods are too complicated to make but you should find enough from the dish of the day to buy and eat. It's much simpler. And you should be checking the trash bin next to the Stardrop Saloon daily because sometimes the dish of the day can be found there, for free. Also, Krobus sells a cooked dish every Saturday, so make sure you check him out too.

Ginger Ale has a very crucial effect, too. It cures nausea. When you are in the dangerous mine, you will find a harder version of ghost that can inflict nausea debuff, making you unable to consume any food except ginger ale. I didn't catch this when 1.5 just released and died to nausea many times and thought the floor impossible to beat until I read about that effect.

Fish stew is actually very simple because it requires only crab pot fishes, so someone who is not too fond of fishing can choose the crab pot route. However, this defeats the purpose because if you don't like fishing, why would you need a fishing buff food from crab pot fishes? I guess it's a way for ConcernedApe to encourage people who fear fishing to attempt it by giving them a very strong buff food that only needs crab pot fishes.

Ive not played a whole lot but this update is whats gotten me into the game proper. Starting with a coop built is such an huge benefit, dont have to spend the I think its 4k gold on the coop then the 800 each for chickens. Starting with 0 crops is a small downside but not a huge debuff. Lastly the tillable area is a bit small but thats fine as soon as you get the green house it alleviates a little.

Actually, the bamboo rod can be useful for certain quests like getting a sunfish for someone since trash and rarer fish cannot be caught on it

There’s literally only one reason that I friended Luis and that’s because every now and then he’ll send you at least 500 gold in the mail and it saved me several times, especially during the winter it saved me. I still hate him but the 500 Gold he sends is really helping me out

Also, to those who don't like to fish at all, all you need is a singular fish to do this, literally one. Which is good because your first fish is guaranteed. Anyway, FISH PONDS! Fish ponds level your fishing up without you even having to fish at all. Sure, it costs more money and more resources, but you only need one fish, AND it produces the roe of whatever fish you put inside. If you put in a sunfish, I guarantee you that by the end of year 1 (at the very least) you will have that pond at full capacity, and will have a good food source, AND a really nice amount of fishing xp. Just a little food for thought. OH, and, Diamond nodes get more common the lower you get, meaning it is HIGHLY unlikely you see one at level 23 of the mines, but level 96? Oh yeah.
