Good video guys. Brought back some memories of my tramp back in 1976 although some of the huts have changed. It is not as well known as the Heaphy but a great trip nonetheless

Is the track to the Valley of the Trolls easy to spot after Harris Saddle and easy to get down to the lake for a swim?
@Getoutdoorsnz8 күн бұрын
It’s easily seen from the track and provides easy access to the lake edge.

Epic trip and great video, thanks Pete. Seems ponchos ruled and being able to call helicpoter was a great option.

Having access to an Inreach and someone to organise things at the other end does provide much more options.

Nicely curated, gosh how many times do you hear about those ponchos being more effective than raincoats!
@Getoutdoorsnz16 күн бұрын
Ponchos are well suited to tracked below the bushline travel. ln more open tracks I velcroed the front up for better ventilation to reduce condensation. Worked for me.

Good to see the Wangapeka again. One of my favourite areas that I tramped and hunted while training at the nearby woody school in Golden Downs State Forest. In June 76 a group of us were tasked with cutting the track from Stag Flat back out to the Wangapeka Road. It rained every day for three weeks. We based ourselves at the original Trevor Carter hut which was in a good clearing on the true left near the Taipo/Karamea confluence. Our work trip was lead by Peter Bell who was the farmer/ranger at the end of the road. Cecil was in his camp on the way out. I see they have put the new one where the old Lunar Hut was. The hut facilities sure look a lot better than what we had. But the track west of Helicopter has become a bit of a mess. I went as far as Brough's tabernacle site in June 2016 for a tiki tour.

Well done Pete and ATC team! It was reminiscing for us. I don't want to do the western side of the Wangapeka track again ever. It was overgrown and difficult enough 5 years ago. It's good to know that the Belltown hut has been replaced though. It sure needed to be. It's track maintenance that's required in there now 😏

As I'm used to off track I didn't find it too bad for an infrequently used route. That said some others did.

Thanks for this great video. I am thinking of doing the tramp solo but just wondering about transport, and may have to walk the connecting road in between. Was it riddled with sandflies? And were gaiters necessary? Thanks, Aileen
@Getoutdoorsnz4 ай бұрын
Hi Aileen. We had two vehicles and left one at either end. It is probably safer to leave your vehicle a Cass and possibly hitch/walk back. Sandflies, don't remember them been too bad. Gaiters were useful but not necessary as the track wasn't overgrown. Enjoy

Hi. The road up followed a spur so nothing on the way up or down. Didn't see any tarns up on the tops so I wouldn't count on anything. You also need to get permission to cross private land , farmer name David James, don't have any contact details.

Enjoyed the video and the spectacular scenery. As a matter of interest what camera did you use? I've just bought a GoPro Hero 12, primarily for tramping in NZ when I visit next month. GoPros certainly have their limitations but I am hopeful will help to remind me just how beautiful NZ is!

Thanks for that info Pete. At times it looked as if you were using a drone but that 3m pole clearly works well! Hopefully my GoPro plus iPhone will give me some reasonable quality footage. Next: learn how to edit it! What did you use for editing? Jeff @@Getoutdoorsnz

Insta360 has reasonable Mobile/PC Studio software I use for initial post processing and then use Davinci Resolve for the rest. Had been using Adobe but too expensive.Slowly coming to grips with Davinci but only using a small percentage of its functionality.

@Getoutdoorsnz7 ай бұрын
Hi Gypsy Girl Thanks, after tramping for over 30 years I guess you don't notice that what is easy for you looks like an epic for others. The harder sections of TA are more a mental headspace thing if you have the fitness. Just ensure you have someone else to tramp these sections with and avoid in dodgy weather. Cheers Pete

Wow Pete! Thanks for the virtual walk over the Dart Rees. It brings 45 year memories from when David and I tramped it with three others from AUTC. I got heel blisters the size of old 50c pieces so took a day off to sit at the Dart hut rather than getting to the Saddle. Shelter Rock and Dart hut have been replaced since then and there're also new huts now in the Dart Valley. When we have the opp I'll show you photos of the old, far smaller character huts!

Thanks Pete for another excellent trip video & blog. The club tramped this two summers ago and your comments about the patronage of huts is spot-on. The Dart hut has 32 bunks and over N/Y's we had in excess of 50 sleeping in & around the hut, plus those who were tenting on the other side of the main bridge.
