TryHackMe was essential for my success in the google cybersecurity cert. I was able to burn through the first few modules because they went over it so well in the first two weeks of working on that cert. I can't recommend it enough to people that are wanting to learn cybersecurity to try this website out. :)

I have a very similar story to yours, I worked as a CNC machinist and was making good money. Hated my job though, I switched to IT and started at the bottom on helpdesk and took a 20K pay cut. Made back my salary within one year when moving up to an IT specialist. I am now a Sys admin, and working at my CCNA on the road to become a Network Engineer, but sure is hard when there are so many other things to learn like the cloud. I also have kids so it is hard, but doable with an understanding, and supportive partner!

I have noticed that recruiters try to box you into your current job title no matter what you know. Perhaps networking and displaying your projects online would be a good angle to approach the exit from the HD. I just create my own experience going to market with a service that I provide to the market. It’s a way to get real experience. Consulting with medium sized businesses. Start your business. Fiverr. Upwork… Local jobs etc

I heard some good advice from someone a few months back that is contrary to Underhill's advice for resumes. As there is a significant rise/increase in millennial-level HR personnel, tailor your resume to appeal to them. This sadly means, your resume has to be visually appealing. The suggestion is to have a graphical appearance much like a web page, more high-level bullet points and less specifics due to their lack of technical knowledge and reduced attention span. I put a few different flavors of resumes out on the interwebs to see which ones got the most responses. Sure enough, the one that was most 'visually' pleasing to view was the one that elicited the most responses from HR and recruiters. Take it for what its worth.

At 41:42 - that resonates with me because I got my jump into cybersecurity because I offered to teach a group of people on a forum how to shoot skeet (shotgun, clay pigeon targets) for the pleasure of it, no charge. One of them turned out to be a cybersecurity manager, and one thing led to another.

How do you know a faraway job would consider you without experience besides spray and pray? My brother works in HR and has told me outright that if you don't live nearby, his company is likely going to throw out the resume because they receive thousands, are a small team and are on a tight schedule and you are making them work harder.

I highly recommend everyone to learn and understand the material thoroughly, not just to pass the CCNA. Investing in used hardware or using EVE-NG for a home lab can be beneficial. Sometimes, you might need to take a pay cut to prove yourself in the job market. After obtaining my CCNA, it took me a year to secure a SCADA networking job with an excellent salary. I faced several setbacks, including a rescinded job offer from Cisco Meraki a week before the start date and rejections from local universities, state jobs, Salesforce, and ThousandEyes. The job market can be really toxic at times, and some hiring managers tend to forget that before they got their positions, someone believed in them and gave them a shot. Despite feeling lost at times, keep pushing forward and don't let anyone stop you.

Does anyone have any experience in government IT work? I just got a 2210 position. I'm hoping to continue with them but moving laterally to a networking job eventually. What made them stand out? Current CCNA, working on CCNP and learning python/network automation (automation isnt my favorite but understand its apeal for employers)

I dont know SOC is not a position people are looking for. now days everyone was to be a hacker so you see people doing anything and everything to be on the offensive side. in fact SOC is the only cyber security job that is always in the look out for people.

Can relate to the part where you had to take a pay cut to jump into the field. I was in the similar situation, didn’t see growth in the position I was in but I had a passion for tech. I took a paycut just to get into tech and was able to make back what I made at my last job in less than a year!
