I am unaware of any fire fight by Cooke's team, and also, although the explosives didn't go off initially, there were able to finish the job with additional charges if my memory serves me correctly. My grand father was No7 Commando, trained in explosives and assigned to join No11 Commando on the raid. I don't think anyone suffered injuries, but if they did it was because the Italians threw concussion grenades into their cave.

I visited Vossenack, the Kall Trail and the Hürtgen Forest itself. The place is still filled with foxholes, bunkers, trenches and craters, all scars from the heavy fighting that took place there. It’s a very sad but interesting place to go to, walking around those tall pine trees gives you an odd eerie sensation.

What about Sergeant pool of the US 3rd armored division? He was the original war Daddy the movie fury was based on him.

The German panzer commander shot Rose more than a "few times"; when Rose's body was later recovered, it was discovered he had taken 14 rounds directly into his chest, neck and head in a short burst from the automatic weapon.

Excellent. It’ appears Rose and his TF cdr welborn discounted enemy forces and felt the war over. Result a bloody reverse for 3rd armored division in the last month of the war. 😢

Generally, the "Battle of Crete" was UNIQUE in the entire WW2! Crete was the first AND ONLY super huge island was been invaded... and from the SKY, by the first LARGER airborn invation in Human History! About 30,000 (in total) German paratroopers (and Mountain Commandos) attacked Crete with ULTIMATE air support (the Germans had "party" over Crete, without A SINGLE allies' plane to face them!)... against 70,000 allies troops (mostly Australians, New Zealanders, Scottish, few other Brits, many regular Greek troops and of course THE ENTIRE CRETE civilian population!)... In "Battle of Crete", the MOST notorious AND DECORATED Batallion was the New Zealand MAORI one!!! The "mad" Cretans found their "brothers-in-arms" - the Maori!!! Cretans LOVE fighting with knives & bayonets... and guess what, Maori TOO!!! So, the Maori gave BLOODY STEEL to the German Paratroopers, many many times during the "Battle of Crete". ESPECIALLY in the most notorious battle, the "Battle of 42nd Street"!!! That was a tiny road, leading from the northern part of Crete to the south, when the Royal British Navy was waiting the retreating British forces to evacuate them. In that street (Brits called it "The 42nd Street"), was mostly ANZAC forces (Australian/New Zealand). So, before the battle started, a single Maori trooper stand up and started the famous "Haka" dance; instantly, 40-50 other Maori troops joined him and an entire Company continue dancing the "Haka" in the open, in front of the surprised German Paratroopers!... In the end of "Haka", the entire ANZAC forces charged with bayonets towards the Germans and they started dropping their weapons and flee to save their lives!!! Even now... after 80 years... every May there are (of course) many ceremonies in Crete, for the memory of those brave men against the Nazis... ...AND OF COURSE... the New Zealanders AND ESPECIALLY Maori always visiting Crete and ALWAYS DANCING again the "Haka" dance, for the memory of their grand-fathers!

Thank you for covering these lesser known smaller unit actions during the war. Most documentaries just cover superficially the big events that lasted for months, like operation Barbarossa, giving them detail like this makes those events much more interesting and it really makes one understand how huge these conflicts were.

Great video! My grandmother fled Vaivara village just before the battles started. She was a small child at the time. Her family home was used as the base of operations by the Germans and all the villages you see on these maps were completely razed to the ground by Soviet artillery. Several of the village names are misspelt in this video though. Not that it changes anything in the story, but i thought id mention it. I guess that might not be the video creators fault though, but the source material itself might be flawed.
