Am I the only one who thought the racism in Bells of notra dame was a good way to show how bad the Romanis have it? Even today there still getting crap.

Fantasia 2000 also did a good job expanding that concept too.

Wow FINALLY …a solid review by a professional reviewer who actually has extensive background knowledge of the show and understands how high stakes the situations are involved for all characters, especially with the Bakers wife, the Baker, and the Witch. It’s refreshing to have an actual professional reviewer who understands the concepts of the show and characters involved, is authentic and not fake with flowery phrasiology (aka trying to sound like an intellectual) ….AND this reviewer is not an Ageist. If some amateur, inexperienced reviewers out there are so worried about how “smart” they sound …maybe they need to start sticking with reviewing fine visual arts that are related to their own field of silly “cartooning”

The cats aren't deciding who dies. They are all dead and the play happens in the afterlife. They are deciding who gets to reincarnate, to a "new life". They are "gelical" as in angelical, because they are kinda angels, in heaven. Further, the heavy side layer is heavy because living beings have bodies, meanwhile gelicals are only souls.

Probably also comes of the villain stereotype of being a highly intelligent, well learnered, sophisticated excentric genius whereas heroes used to be more on the athletic physical side. A traditional hero would play a flute or a violin, instruments that are joyfull, homely and festive and in a crowd whereas the organ sounds majestic and you usually don't see the organist, he is apart from the crowd he plays to.

You know, I was gonna have my insane loner villain play the pipe organ at the end of the story I was writing purely for the prison bars aesthetic, but after hearing this background entirely and perfectly describes said villain I have no choice but to cement that fact.

Its funny how operas are often considered posh and high culture and way too complex, yet most opera plots are simpler than a Seinfeld episode and these grand sweeping singing scores are people expressing their most basic wants which could be summed up in a half sentence.

Biggest problem with this film is that it is telling a very emotionally dramatic story in a time of big political turmoil and revolution. Yet, the grandieur of the situation never comes through because the actors often stand in small cramped rooms or in front of empty background, alone, not in an ensmble and with awkward close ups. These songs, this story are meant to happen on a large stage.

It kind a seems to be as if Tom Hooper thought that he is gonna get the best movie by letting the actors do whatever they want and bent the entire project around that. Cue in the music having to follow them and the VFX artists being overworked because we can't have actors wear mo-cap suits.

is it possible that the song at 1:00:45 works on a beat, because the singer is actually tapping the beat for himself and the orchestra, thereby setting and keeping a rythm?

1:48 An additional detail with that is that when we see each pairing of the gems trying to fuse for the first time, each of their instruments plays in a style in accordance with their own personality. Pearl's piano is elegant, Amethyst's drums are wild, Garnet's bass is bold. Then when they complete the fusion, the instruments take on characteristics of the other gem. Very distinct in Opal's theme, where the drums tighten up and focus under Pearl's influence and the piano loosens up and has fun with it under Amethyst's, but it's there with the other fusions too

"I'm starting to get that Cosette is like the center of all these situations." That's what me and other people have been thinking for some time and I find it very interesting (I would sometimes believe that's the reason why she's in the poster of the musical and in the book cover of the brick, instead of Valjean). Because I've seen more people criticize Cosette, or more specifically the musical version of her, being an empty character and not being that too interesting.

But seriously, the focus on mirrored self--the Matrix's version of you and your actual You--fascinates me. A lot of people read The Matrix as a trans allegory, including at least one of the Wachowski Sisters. It's undeniably about how the artifice of our society alienates us from who we actually want to be, at least.

I saw Cats as a teenager back in the 80s when it was the hot musical. I freaking loved it! I still do. No there's no deep storyline, but that's ok. It was the energy, the visuals, the dancing and the singing that made the stage show so magical. It doesn't adhere to storytelling rules or music theory but I was never one for rules. That being said the worst thing about the film was the CGI stuff so was darn creepy. I much prefer the 1998 film which was created to look like the stage show.

Geez, you would think having learned the word "leitmotiv" like 30 years ago, I could have had a concrete understanding of it. I had seen it in classes involving both music and literature but could not get it. Your explanation clarifies things and hopefully, I will be able to retain the meaning of these words, now. Of course now, my problem is finding circles of people with whom I can use such words. lol Thank you!
