Thanks Ben. Another informative video. This series on the soft skills is really useful and a great reminder of a few key things to focus on, to help some of us continue to progress in this intermediate stage. I surf a lot of beach breaks in Port Stephens, NSW, where close-outs greet us most mornings 😉. So, the last part of this video was particularly relevant (trying to push through a partial close-out to keep in front of the section). I'm wondering if you have any guidance on techniques for actually achieving the acceleration in such incidences to drive through, or around, the white water to get back in front of it, when it starts to shut-down a little in front of you? P.S. I quite like the music (but I find life is generally better with music). If anything, your whiteboard skills are a bigger distraction 😜 (just jokes, as I know it is not easy, and your scrawlings do add value in communicating the messages). In all honesty, I think a lot of us would be disappointed if the acoustic guitar went. A possible compromise could be to add subtitles (with all that spare time you have), so it can be muted and we still get the message...

Great Video. Ben what do you recommend for board sizing. I've ridden everything from 9'0" to 10'0". Never really found the sweetspot. I"m 6'0" 185lbs. Considering a 9'6" 23" 3 1/8'"

Tx Ben, great Vid :) Question: what do you do with your feet when paddling in ? I and a lot of other people lift their feet in the air to get momentum. But I'm not sure if this helps on all waves, sometimes the wave hits the feet before the pop up.

So if you would rather catch a wave from a little wider, all those that paddle inside you have priority? Narrr, you see if none of them are making it to the shoulder nobody gets a ride. That's stupid and further more just because you have more speed doesn't give you any more rights than anyone else. Some people think that the next wave is always theirs and some people think they can hate you of the break (especially those 20+ wannabe JJFs). Nar to that too.

it's simple enough when you're all on longboards queuing up for a nice reefy, but when you've got everything from logs to toothpicks all going for the same beachbreaks and working different different depths depending on how early they can take off, it becomes mad max. i love to ride a fish but that usually means i want the same rolling waves as the longboarders, who can paddle into them a good 10-15 feet further out. even if you've been waiting out there an hour, the chances of a pack of loggers voluntarily letting a nice shape pass through them just for everyone else waiting on the inside are approximately 0. so if you're not bringing foam, if it's a good day at a known spot you usually have to leave your expectations for fairness at the door and grab whatever scraps you can.
@JasonForouhar
@JasonForouhar 12 күн бұрын
Yesss, thats typical at my home break , I'm often on a longboard or Glider even in big surf and sit outside a whole bunch of short boarders, ...I always let half a dozen nice ones roll through and watch to see who's taking them ....but after a bunch that nobody catches... I go! ....and I kinda feel like if you didn't bring foam because you cant turn a bigger board and your not catching waves....thats your choice... This rule goes triple in Bali....so many beginners that can't catch waves on short boards out there....I hate to be a wave hog but man if I let a bunch roll through and you aint surfing forget it.
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine 6 күн бұрын
That's true, in an ideal world the longboarders would notice who is holding priority as they're paddling out after a wave and still sit behind until its their time.. But like you said probably not always gonna happen..

The timing to use turtle roll and shooting over techniques? Use Shooting through techniques when wave form a curve shape and near breaking in front of you? (I tried to use turtle roll for this situation, but most of time it doesn’t work) and i saw most shot-boarder use duck dive in this situation Use Turtle roll when the wave become white water

On the xy alignement. There is a method used in sailing called alignments. Applied to surf, when you are at the peak, you just have to pick 3 points ( works ok with 2 points) on land that align on 2 different axis ( the axis don’t have to be perpendicular) as long as you can see those 2 alignments you’re in the sweet spot. I often use branch of trees aligned with house in the background, and road sign with parked car

Hey Ben, congrars to the qualification!! That's amazing. As a physicist, oceanographer, climate scientist and shaper as it coemes to positioning in the line up, you always need 2 markers for each axis. Lining these 2 markers up you will be at the correct line for that first direction ( a house and a tree or a tree and darker sand or srones at the beach ) now in order to be at the correct distance from the shore you pick up another 2 marker looking more sideways. With that you have two perfectly defined lines and right where these 2 lines intersect ( both pair of marker line up ) you are at the spot you wanted to be. The second pair of markers can also be your first ones as in your example with the visibility of the house ( only roof, windows or the whole house ). Here you actually use the third dimension ( z-axis ) for your second bearing. Physics is amazing. So great that you talk about this topic. It is so valuable Information that had never been written down and everybody had to learn it the hard way. Did you recieved my e-mail? Hope to see you in Europe Best Martin 🤙🏻
