Hi, thanks for the video. I am in the UK and I am interested in these Budd EMUs. I wondered if the central Doors, that are flush with the Sides are used as emergency exits only and the Doors at the car ends are used for normal Passenger on/off access? Also, I presume the 'bumps' in the roofs are for Air-conditioning, etc.? Thank you.
@sepa2401
@sepa2401 Ай бұрын
Of course! The EMU cars seen in this video are Silverliner IVs manufactured by General Electric and Avco. The Silverliner IIs that SEPTA had were manufacured by the Budd company. The Silverliner IV cars have doors at each end of the car, but they actually lack center doors entirely. Those are filler panels where the center doors would've been located, meaning no emergency exit. The NJ Transit Arrow II and III cars have those center doors instead of the filler panel. The doors at each end can board passengers, but at smaller stations, the conductor only opens a few of the doors. At the center city stations, the engineer opens the door a the very front to speed up the boarding process. The emergency exits are marked by red and white tape surrounding the window on the exterior. The large bumps in the roof do house HVAC equipment, but they are mostly for dynamic braking, which the NJ Transit Arrow cars lack.

@@sepa2401 Hi, thank you for your reply, it is very useful to learn from. When I first picked-up on the name 'Silverliner', I had been researching Budd RDCs, they were a surprise since I had been unaware that Silverliners even existed. Good to confirm about the raised Roof sections being for HVAC and D/Bs. On the RDC footage I have seen, all they seemed to do is spew-out diesel exhaust Fumes. Thanks again.

@@gp3829 The humps on the Budd RDCs are for the exhaust system and cooling fans. There are two engines underneath the RDCs, and I think they were manufactured by Detroit Diesel.

They almost never run them up here. Last time they were ran for revenue trains were during the 2016 Silverliner V shortage. This happened to be a qualifying trip for a trainee engineer to learn push/pull operations. They always terminate at Lansdale.

@@vidrioandsonstrucking2422 I don’t have that type of valve, but I’ll try my best to help. Your leak could be occurring from loose connections on your hose. A good way to check is with soapy water (Simply spray it on the valve and hose connections and check for spots that are bubbling). You should then clean cut the hose and ensure a secure connection between the hose and the brass fitting. If it’s the valve itself however, you would want to clean the inside of the valve as best as you can, and then ensure the nut on the valve handle it tight enough that it doesn’t leak air. Remember to always use teflon tape on all NPT pipe connections as well.

Yep! Caltrain's main horn of choice on their locomotive and cabcar fleet are Nathan AirChime P2s with bells 2 and 3. Some of Caltrain's horns have fouled #3 bells where the #2 bell is the only bell sounding, so it's basically the same sound as a fouled Caltrain P2 without the #3 bell. JPBX 921 is a prime example. If you want a more realistic sound, I can use a longer air line from the valve to the horn so the horn tails off more.

All i see is money thrown away. Horn is junk. I got the 3 bell chrome from a truck chrome shop. It worked great till the PLASTIC DIAPHRAGMS THEY HAVE IN THEM POPPED A HOLE IN THEM FROM THE BACKSTOP ON THE INSIDE. I'M thinking...no problem. I'll just order some new ones. So i got the new stainless steel ones...horn hasn't worked since. I replaced the O rings,cleaned it inside and out. Wasn't dirty at all. It's mounted behind the cab tilted at an angle downwards on my semi truck. So new O rings,new diaphragms,money thrown away. I bought the Outlaw from Hornblasters. Just took my half inch line off the junk,mounted it plugged the line in and now i have a REAL TRAIN HORN!

I've had these horns for over a year and they've worked mostly fine without issue. While mine is mounted on a bicycle trailer (which is sheltered from the elements), yours was under a truck where it's exposed to the elements. Even if your horns were not dirty on the inside, they could've still had issues due to moisture inside your air lines. Another thing is the volume and PSI you ran them at. If you ran them with lines larger than the horn could handle, that could've blown out the diaphragms. If you ran them over the rated 150 PSI, those could've also blown out the diaphragms. I would say however that you horn could've been defective from the start due to poor manufacturing. If the seat where the diaphragm sits on has chips, It's no good. If the inside ring on the backcap has issues, it also would have trouble sounding.

Obviously you don't much about classy trucks. I have a Bendix factory built and installed air dryer system on this truck. I'm no rookie here. Been doing this for 43 years. Have had several types if horns on my trucks. There is no debris, no moisture,no dirt ,they are spot less inside and out. The stainless steel diaphragms are just not as pliable as the plastic junk they had inside. I've tried decreasing the air pressure, increasing it,etc. Mine are straight lined off a half inch air line thru a manual hand valve. Which is also United pacific approved.

Push pulls don't run on the Lansdale-Doylestown Line due to the close distance between stations, and the Silverliner EMU cars are better at accelerating and braking than the ACS-64s and Comets.
