1:57 Hold on there, the religious leaders from the Jews already condemned Jesus to death but they were not allowed to carry out the death penalty so they handed Him over to Pontius Pilate the Roman Governor and demanded His death in a riot that left him no way out, so Pilate granted the death sentence out of fear because he knew Jesus was innocent and most of the Jews hated him because of being under the religious leaders like the Pharisees (most of them but only few like Nicodemus opposed because they saw first hand of God's power working through Jesus Christ His Son). True that He was handed over to Herod Antipias because he wanted to see what Jesus would do and when He refused, Herod grew bored after making fun of Him and sent Him back to Pilate.
