European Union is now preparing to implement an ambitious undertaking: Digital Product Passport. This will enable keeping track of all supply chain of the products, manufactured or imported. Sustainability considerations during the production of materials and raw materials can be quantified and regulated. And guess which industries will be the first pilot applications: textiles and batteries! Do you think EU's Digital Product Passport would have an effect on battery material supply chain, especially fixing the Chinese distruptions to lithium market?

Great assessment Rodney. Vexing situation with Lepidolite in China and DSO shipping from Africa. As you suggest it all gets down to the OEM’s. The vested interests in oil are huge and the relatively recent from 2000 scale of these investments in fracking are demanding returns. It’s a shame these tariffs were introduced but hopefully this will only delay the inevitable by 5 years.

SQM is the only lithium company I have continued to add to my position. They are into other commodity chemicals and pay a dividend. Long term hold. With the current price depression to continue to at least the rest of the year many other smaller companies will be forced to suspend production. The cash burn will merit it.

If they are able to make a profit in this environment then when a price incline begins they will benefit in their earnings. Obviously shareholder value can only appreciate. Vale and Rio Tinto have been hurt in the iron ore market. 2 other stocks I hold and been adding to these positions when a rebound comes. Im holding all my other lithium holdings hoping for some rebound but so many have got crushed. Will we see mergers for survival in the coming year will be interesting. With low valuations this is a possible situation.

@@monkeysezbegood China is doing more to decarbonize the world than any other country right now. It's indisputable at this point. I predict that "eventually", we will get a clue and let the Chinese EVs be sold in the US so we can have something affordable to buy and have a plethora of choices. Also, companies like Nouveau Monde Graphite, Novonix, Standard Lithium etc will, and should, sell to China or "whoever" else can buy their materials. I'm OK with that. The US needs to work to be aligned with what is going on... we are a bit clueless right now, that's why analysts and most people from the West can't make heads or tails of what is going on. I've recently been to Brazil, Thailand, Singapore etc.... most people I know either cannot or will not travel much outside the US, so they don't see that many parts of the world are moving right along and doing just fine (for the most part) without the US's involvement. The EV revolution has already started and it will not stop, with or without the US. There's more that could be said but the facts speak for themselves.

Here’s some perspective. I just finally, bought my first EV. I waited for a number of reasons for things to align and then pulled the trigger. I am ecstatic. It is more than I hoped for. I will not go back to gas cars except at gunpoint. I will not contribute to oil wars ever again. Despite following this industry since 2010, my primary motivation was just that; to never again pull into a gas station. Just like with the rationale for decentralized currency, such as bitcoin, I am driven to now put a charger in my garage, a battery in my garage and solar my roof to be 100% independent of these fucking political psychopaths from all parties. I would like to think that this would inform the marketplace and those to do the analytics. Apologies for my long winded message, but at work I finally drove my EV in. When I did, a coworker came running up to me, excitedly saying “I just bought an EV.” She was ecstatic. everybody at work knows my background. she and I then took the six of our coworkers out for a ride over lunch in both our EVs. Now six of them are either planning on or have ALREADY bought EV’s of various (non-Tesla) brands. If I am just one node in this network of activity, imagine exponential curving that same phenomenon as Tony Seba would say. Materials Science and DECENTRALIZATION will rule. Despite all these fucking wars these assholes try to cling their power to - and with. The people will rule.

Follow up. Those may be the rantings of an old hippie like me. But get this. I work with a very conservative surgeon. We talked about things for many months, and a lot about how much she dislikes Elon Musk. I totally get that. I personally think he’s a fucking lunatic. But that’s another story. The point is, she’s conservative. So one day she comes into work and tells me about her new EV: a new Rivian SUV. Blew my mind. Not only that, but she put a charger and a battery in her garage and solar on her roof. Now she gets a check every month from the Excel local utility company. When I tell her story to other people, you should see their eyes just blow wide open. They just don’t get this bare minimum truth about the realities that are all around us. let these two stories serve you going forward. They are real world stories that happened spontaneously, because of the free will of sane humanity, and barely “free” markets. Peace out!

I have seen some comments about water issues in NV. Many of the projects will be recycling a lot of the water in their processes. In the case of Century Lithium they are using a brine water that cannot be used in the raising of cattle or as irrigation for crops. So the water they will be using has no other use than as a way to get lithium out of clay. This key fact also makes them a perfect partner for the existing brine operation of their neighbor Albemarle. I have invested to the level that I have because the marriage of the Albemarle's water rights and the Century Lithium process is one I think can turn the whole Clayton Valley in NV into the gold standard of lithium production in the US. Add that to the fact there is plans for huge solar projects in the area and new power lines going in that are practically on the project. The Clayton Valley lithium will be some of the cleanest and greenest lithium produced anywhere in the world.

The higher capex has a trade off benefit as these NV projects will be producing end battery grade product. That risk is being backed by the U.S gov't on a level never before seen in the mining industry, maybe going back to WWII. These NV projects will be in a class of their own as a one stop shop from shovel to battery maker in one operation. I see that as a clear justification for the higher capex. China will do everything it can to muck up the works, but it will reach a point where the U.S. determination will overcome the market forces China tries to use to slow the process . Time will tell

Yes, Thacker Pass, and NV clay for that matter is the only way the U.S. gets a domestic supply chain. IMO Nevada clay projects will have an advantage over spodumene due to the fact these projects will produce final battery grade products on site. They will have none of the added transportation costs that come with hard rock operations. Where it takes passing through several hands to get to the battery makers. No blasting, haul trucks, recycled water usage, plus potential by-products with the chemical process to lower opex. For all these factors it is a better option than Aussie hard rock.

Lithium producers have so far stuck with brines and spodumene. Scalable economics for lithium clays have not yet been demonstrated to be commercially viable and successful. Many costly surprises will no doubt arise along the way. Although minor amounts of North American lithium supply might come from DLE from deep basin brines, most will have to be sourced from spodumene. Although sizeable spodumene deposits have been discovered, with a few either under development or to be developed, there have been no major announcements yet of midstream chemical conversion plants to convert spodumene to Li hydroxide and or lithium carbonate, or downstream lithium cathode manufacturing. Although EU and US appear to be ahead of China on solid state battery development, lots of Gov't support is required to have any hope of catching up to China and have a viable North American battery supply chain from mine to EVs , hybrids or grid storage batteries.

Excellent report Howard. Finally things appear to be happening in North America. While I certainly am doubling down on lithium I am still concerned about the refining capacity in North America. It’s one thing saying you are building battery gigafactory factories, here there and everywhere, but where is the lithium hydroxide to feed the plants. It’s easy to be a negative Nelly but battery gigafactory factories required decisions on form factors and chemistries. Are these factories going to pursue the 4680 format or the CATL blade model. Are they going to apply NCM or LFP chemistries. All these needs to be determined with OEMs purchasing product. But before this the spodumene needs to be refined to lithium hydroxide as the feedstock. Albemarle has done a pontius pilot and washed its hands of refining responsibility and passed the ball to China. Currently they are using the price of the product to stultify supply. This is no way to generate 150% growth rates in BESS. But hey, great report and good demonstration of getting on with it.
