Perfect review of this game. My biggest gripe is the story easily, though the combat isn't fantastic either. They literally could have taken either the Tenchu 1 or 2 routes and they chose some weird alternate reality something or other style instead. Great Tenchu review series. I'll definitely watch if you review more Tenchu games.

Ok I didn't intend this comment to turn into a review of the game, but that's basically what happened. Good video. This game is ok. I like the additional items you can get. I like that you can pick up items from enemies. I like the more developed story, and that each mission was the character's portion of the story unlike the first game. But it lost the atmosphere. This gamehad an awful soundtrack, when music did play. Normally you don't hear any music. Music consists of an annoying sting if you're detected followed by a just as annoying dun dun dun dun. Who thought that was a good idea? I also noticed if you splash in water when there's no one around you'll still be treated to an alert status along with that annoying ditty mentioned before. Makes no sense. I also don't understand why the graphics are worse compared to the o.g. I'm working ona let's play of this with a friend co commentating and he's not familiar with the series at all. So it's interesting getting his perspective. I showed him Punish the Evil Merchent from the o.g. and his reaction was pretty telling. "This looks better in almost every way". I think the dog looked a little worse was about the only draw back. Also what's up with the loading screens? In o.g. you walk into a cutscene, it just plays. You can even affect it a bit by throwing a grenade or smoke bomb into it, or use the disguise spell or have enemies chase you into it, and they'll appear in the cutscene. Not in this game. And you can drag bodies, which is pretty cool except enemies don't really seem to have the 6th sense, they don't see de-d people, not my joke. Also particularly in Ayame's campaign everyone acts so childish. I read apparently she basically is one, so I can get her acting that way, but Gembu is Goo 2.0 except Goo was cooler. Although I do like his final scene with Ayame. Shows she can have some heart. Tetsumaru was an interesting addition, though I've still never completed his campaign. Could never capture the villagers. Still it's a masive downgrade from the original which is my favorite game of all time.

I had a similar 80s TMNT obsession. Still kinda love it for completely different reasons now. This was my first ever ps1 game and my all time favorite game. The soundtrack is amazing and the atmosphere works nicely.

Never heard of the game. Looks like a 'worthy' game to play. But I hate insects and bugs. I noticed Japanese have a fetish with it. The game would have been much better if they just kept to samurais, ninjas, zombies, and sorcerers. It might have made it to my list of favorite games (played and unplayed).

You showed his name, but didn't mention Sho Kosugi's involvement. Still a great video, I'm just always disappointed when he doesn't get recognized for his work.

Damn this common thread only has three comments including mine? I've always been wanting to play this game so I think I'm going to definitely give it a shot after watching this. Though I have to give myself another month or two to forget lol so I don't ruin it for myself...again.

Regarding your primary weapons not feeling like they have enough reach, you could actually steal spears/bows & arrows from enemy guards. I remember the spear making boss fights a little too easy once you got the spacing and timing down. Edit after seeing end of section for Tesshu. Better late the never lol

yes u are purely from the 90s, man i love how we all shared the same sensation. I saw it for 1st time at a friends house, i was the smallest one from the group and i was that annoying little kid of 7 years old who would play Mario and Aladdin with his snes. One day , my friends gathered together to play a game in Javier's house, when i asked "Can i join you guys?" all of them laughed and told me : "Sorry carlitos, this game isnt for you , its for adults " (they were like 10 years old) and i got so angry that Javier's mother invited me too. When i entered the room , all of the guys said, "Ok you can look , but you cant play , stay quiet and dont touch anything" So i took the honor code very seriously and stayed quiet while watching the big guys do their stuff. What i saw that afternoon , changed my mind for videogames for ever. Seeing heads rolling, executions, gore, arm obliterations... I was completely blown away . I insisted so much i couldnt stop speaking so they eventually let me play a little bit and guys that is the best gaming experience i ever had. I had so much fun in those moments, i remember them telling me how to perform different executions, how to use the graplin hook , not to kill innocents, etc... the real good times...

This is so in-depth for a game that's so niche and forgotten nowadays, it makes me really happy to see it get love still because then maybe one day the owners of the IP will figure out there's so much potential to tap into with a modern sequel/reimagining. Amazing work!

This is the PERFECT Ronin Blade video review. It's everything I hoped an ideal review of the Game would be. The story, the weapons, the special attacks, the different custom, the music - they all merge to create a badass game which will forever be etched in my memory. Highly recommended even in 2024. Thank you so much for making this! 🙏💙

Neither have I 😅 Tbh though I kinda love this game. I know it's flawed as hell, monotenous and borrows a lot from other games but somehow the characters and story really connected with me. Glad to see someone giving it the time of day, given the reception wasn't all too hot when it released. Hope you do the other two games from rpg factory as well.

I love FF8. It has some of the coolest cutscenes of any FF game and some very eerie/cool moments ( being stuck drifting in space and finding the abandoned spaceship just before your oxygen runs out..) However FF8 feels EXTREMELY undercooked. Like it was rushed out massively with half finished concepts and mechanics

I pissed the guy that made me copies soo much about this game, when i accidentally ruined the cd the very next day i got it, he never made a 2nd copy, and i never played this again, but the last decade i've been dreaming with a remake of it After seeing what i missed a few years ago here, i'm glad i had tenchu to scratch the itch, and didn't get bored with this, it would ruin the fantasy

I grew up with this game. I was enchanted by the PSX demo. I loved this game so much. I really love your input on the Japanese culture. I also love Onimusha and felt both games were deeply similar. Both end bosses are kind of similar. They both have betrayal beats. There is a lot that bind them together. Samanosuke and Kotaro are really similar as protagonists. I feel they are in the same universe. Thank you for this really exhaustive and thoughtful video essays. It really brought back a real trasure from my childhood.

I find it funny how Metronome is so damn unreliable, that it literally makes even Arceus himself lose to pretty trivial encounters.

I put countless hours into Soul of the Samurai, it's a shame that unlike a lot of other games for the ps1 era, the chances of this one ever coming back for people to buy seems low or not at all.

To echo others on here, I've watched all the retrospectives and I'm so glad you took the time and energy to make these. Tenchu was one of my favorite series from my formative years and it's so rarely talked about which is criminal considering it was the definitive Ninja experience for so long. Great work! Also fun fact, I'm quite certain Tesshu was heavily inspired by the character Bian The Assassin, the titular character portrayed by pre-Hollywood Ken Watanabe. It was quite popular in Japan and is a pretty fun series if you can find it some place (it was also remade last year apparently).

Don't know of any Tenchu fans have noticed, but in Tenchu: Fatal Shadows, the cave mission is a remake of the cave mission from Stealth Assassins, and mission 9 or 10 (can't remember exactly) is a remake of mission 4 from Stealth Assassins

I always thought of Red as a Red Mage/Berserker class since he has the most balanced stats compared to everyone in the party. (Also with the info that the name he was given is Red XIII, with M being the 13th letter in the alphabet.) Also, I can see Cait Sith being a Blue Mage/Gambler.

I got the feeling if this game was remade today, it be a mixed between Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice or Way of the Samurai series and the Resident Evil 2 & 4 remake.
