I always download models from 3dwarehouse to check first if they are good enough for my project, then, select them and put them in my main project file. Also if i have a more complex project, like a very big house, i usually create the 3d model of the house, check to see if the lighting and other details are in order, and copy that file to other folders named as rooms (ex: Kitchen + Dining, Living Room, Bedroom, Bathroom etc). This way i'm able to 3d model for each room individually and not get my main project very complicated..
