How stupid “these buildings are maintained as part of black history and culture? WTF is that? Jesus everything has to be symbolic for blacks when ultimately it was their own people who rounded them up, raped, beat and stole them from their countries and sent them out on boats to America. So we have to “honor” this? Why don’t you be embarrassed about your own having so little care and disregard that they would throw you away like a piece of trash? Now that is something… Why don’t you go find the Zanzibar tribal leader’s relatives and hold them accountable???? Oh yeah because that doesn’t pay for your sht…. Disgusting

Making Houston a safe and prosperous city will require a massive international military operation with artillery, napalm, and war crimes no cap. It'd be akin to the US in Iraq back in the day lol

ONCE GOT A LETTER from Huey P.Meaux. It was odd since I had never met him. Musta gotten my address from musician. A mixup of sorts. Can t remember the details, late 80s. Not sure what was the intention, prob bookings 4 sby to N.Europe. Got the envelope still, though. Produced T--Bone Walker s last sessions on his Home Cookin lbl WELL DONE ..

You know what else went down lady? Your culture. It's been replaced by gangster rap music which degrades women and promotes violence and drug use. And those wards are full of gang violence as well. I doubt she still lives there.

They have gentrified the area so bad. Now all of the whites and Asians are moving in. Tearing the homes down building cheaply built expensive town home. Even changing the street names.

Alot of what was said is true only to a point. Most is not race but a culture thing. Blacks can go to a rich school with new books. Just like they can graduate and become whatever they want and be stable. But also they can work at McDonald's if they choose.... and well..we'll... they chose just like any race. And ignorance is bliss in BLM movement. They have even screwed their own people and chapters over. It's about time to stop making excuses and holding yourselves back and move on and always remember the history but learn from it and become better. Don't use it as a crutch

There is a lot of incorrect information and some very important facts left out. Third ward is bounded by main street up to buffalo bayou around to Macgregor. Before U.S. 59 came through there, Jews and blacks both lived there with a few Italian families mostly west of Hamilton street. The stores Wiengartens was owned by Jews. These socalled row houses where built as temp housing for the railroad workers that were close to the track that ran from north of I45 along where 288 out to Sugarland and a song was made named after the train that passed by the central Prison in Sugar land where Lead Belly Blake made the song midnight speacial.

Prior to the well fair programs if the LBJ administration and the introduction of crack in the 80's the wards (and especially 3rd ward) had a thriving economic and social community. It was a self sustaining economic powerhouse with opportunities. Many buildings and houses are still standing and reflect the prosperity of that time. It was a good time to live for most everyone in Houston of all races. This is well documented in books and publications and well worth the time to research. Really nice presentation and informative video.

I appreciate the inclusion of the bar graph at 9:12 but it has no source listed, no individual job specified nor year indicated. The following graph at 9:26 shows 2% of 75 million in the white collar workforce whom qualify for healthcare, not jobs in 2017... (Restless Bandit looks for candidates eligible for healthcare, not labor statitics)

Very informative video. I've lived just outside of what's considered Houston for about 2 years, but have tried to learn more about the city's history, as east and south of downtown is still very unfamiliar to me. I've heard a lot of people refer to places like Third Ward as "ghetto", but always figured that wasn't a fair critique. I've driven around Third Ward and other areas trying to get a better understanding of what they're like, and it's unfortunate how impoverished some areas are. UofH looks very nice, and there are some areas that seem to be doing quite well. I hope it can continue to improve and thrive. Despite it's problems, I do like Houston and want it to prosper.

I'm not from Third Ward, but I was born and raised in Houston. I see the beauty in Third Ward, and you can see the skyline of Houston. Small history fact: Now, the street Dowling was named after a Confederate General name Dowling, and he was from Tuam. Since this video was made, the City of Houston has changed the street's name to Emancipation. They're still in the process of changing other names.
