In short, first few meters are difficult to dive, then you practically freefall.

Yes, common sense is your lifesaver. Sometimes the odds are not in your favor . I say this because I had to be saved multiple times, always because I failed to think and or use my common sense thus failing to evaluate a situation before getting involved ultimately becoming a great big (No FuN) . Had I used my brain , I wouldn't have ruined an otherwise nice afternoon by requiring someone to save me from drowning.

It allows you to prep for your dive. Breathing techniques as well as relaxing your body prior to descent are crucial when it comes free diving and down time. But yeah, once you submerge it serves no purpose
