So I feel like there’s a bit I can say about this subject. So first about different study techniques. I get that mind mapping is an awesome tool for studying, seeing connections, and getting one to comprehensively grasp the concepts and information. However, it does seem that there is a bit of a process to doing this correctly so I don’t think it works when you’re note taking in the classroom actively. If it does, you would have to explain how that possibly works. Second: the reason they could also be asking if there are different methods, well at least for me, it’s really hard to believe that mind mapping is all there is to it. As useful and as wonderful as it may be. It’s underwhelming how it cool be narrowed down to just that. Third: despite all these explanations, they are vague and difficult to see how relationships are being created since we don’t normally use them ourselves. Lastly: even though most of my experience creating mind maps have been in the moment, though not optimal, it has helped me to grasp relationships better than just writing long notes of text.

I recently learned about high order learning should I apply it when learning new things or should I relearn things that I already studied?

Well, the new thing is Bloom's Revised Taxonomy! And, the msg is to switch from linear note taking habit to creating mind maps.

Can I join ICanStudy if I don’t have a particular subject or topic I’m currently learning? I’m only focusing on improving my Spanish. Besides that, I’m not really learning a subject like math or biology, etc.

A good way to avoid having huge lists: You can be radical and only allow 4 arrows to leave any point. It forces you to prioritize and group things better. You can start 100% radical with no exceptions until you improve. I find a subject like history the best to practice, since you can focus on the relationships and do a "linear" backbone that works like a timeline/cause-effect of events. You can branch up or down to elaborate and train your chunking.

Okay wow I feel like I have learnt more about testosterone here than in most common lectures specifically teaching psychology. This video is wayyy too big of a gem 🤯 Chunking techniques, aim/shoot system for keywords, relational and big-picture thinking, and even in context of reading studies?! I will always be in awe of your work, Dr Justin 🤩

Great extension of Bloom's Taxonomy. Really landed categorizing in terms of importance and prioritizing. Main take away was simpler grouping for expansion.

19:00 it's funny how we end up learning through relationships even when doing information priority, we just establish relationships between the small bits we remember in each new revision until we have a solid enough foundation to remember most of it. It "only" takes about 10x longer. As an addition, I think you can do information priority well when you have a very solid foundation on the subject. There is no reason to think about relationships when you have that foundation, because your brain will automatically understand the relationships. It would be counter productive to stop and take notes or think about the relationships. This is often possible when you have mastery over something and starts learning closely related information. This is likely because the cognitive load is lower. It's like putting on a perfectly fitting pair of gloves

This explains why priming is so important. You can help building relationships within the content so it becomes the glue for the lecture.

Here is a little trick. When you are about to engage in a new subject, do the following. Try to think of something related to it that you have some curiosity about. It's even better if it's related to something you have some level of mastery and likes. This is not always possible. If you can't, just do the normal stuff mentioned on this video. If you find it, it may be worth taking a small detour to build a bridge between what you picked and the main topic. This sounds just like the normal method, but it isn't. The normal way is to start studying and find connections on the way. If you start from a place you know about or really want to know about you can both make the studying more interesting and build a foundation to learn the adjacent content. One example: you are about to start studying World war 1. You could start from the start. But what if you read Gulag Archipelago and was curious over the start of the communist revolution? You could do self study on that event, trying to link it to events from WW1. What if you loved the civilization games, you always picked Oto von Bismarck/Germany and you are curious about it. Studying German history from that point would be a major benefit to understanding WW1 from a German perspective. What if you read Mein Kampf or always wanted to? It gives a unique window into the end of WW1 and shines light on how harsh the conditions were. These examples differ from pre WW1 history to end/post WW1 history to an event that wasn't totally related, but has connections to it. Even if you can't find this kind of situation, you could still start from a question you always had. You can start with a list of questions. I do this before I even do any pre study. It's a powerful weapon to make study fun and relevant. It builds a foundation that isn't always powerful on its own, but becomes crucial after you start even your pre study.

So from what I’m understanding, the main purpose of the mindmap is to categorize, prioritize, find, emphasize relationships, and represent information nonverbally?

So much gold here! Reflection might look daunting at first, but remember, even a reflection that didn't seem to have been that useful is setting the path for an even better reflection, and so on, until you'll be able yo understand and solve your problems and achieve further improvement

I have a bit of a question here.... I'm in the US and I assume you're not. Is your testing schedule different from ours or am I to assume we're supposed to ignore the class schedule.... I have had classes where we have tests every other week and we do lectures where we take notes until basically a few days before the test. I know from previous videos that we're supposed to be using a lecture as a main learning event and priming for about a weeks worth of lectures at a time. How does that work with this revision schedule? Or are we assuming that the exam in this case is the final exam at the end of the class and not normal tests

Should i learn foundational knowledge of all subjects & then finer details of all subjects OR Should i learn foundational knowledge of 1 subject & then finer details of it & repeat this process for each subject?

Nice video about learning. I have some details to add: 1. FlashCards are a kind of powerlearning priorizing unknown content for extended iterations. 2. FlashCards generating by hand is a first step for integration of knowledge if used correctly categorizing content according visual symbolism on all 6 sides of every card 3. Beyond your nice description of concepts there is a technic using nearly complete anti-sequential learning ... but this needs a skill of "reverse learning" - means a teacher has to build these items as a complete picture deviding it into parts for each main category (you say "chunk") of learning and one for their integration ... its a symboling far beyond MindMaping ... quasi a meta-brain-forming (resulting from neuroplasticity). This technic is simultaniously top-down and bottom up and even sideways not letting isolated knowledge exist for long ... I hope transferred my thoughts not too abstract ...

So how do I utilize this information? Imagine I just opened a topic that I have zero knowledge on. What do I do? Do I just attempt problems for the Apply stage and then read the correct answers?
@HasanRx7
@HasanRx7 2 ай бұрын
I guess having basic memorization and understanding of the topic will ease your entry to the "apply" level. You don't need to spend all your time in them though, just get what you really need to start rolling. For example, if you want to start speaking in a new language about cars, you will need to learn the most basic vocabulary revolving around cars as well as the most basic grammar to compose sentences. From there you can start speaking and your brain will automatically learn new vocabulary and grammar on the go.

This video is really useful for a uni student like me! I was panicking because my course hardly provides practice papers (im a business student) and most of the time, the papers' contents are outdated since our syllbus has been through many constant changes. I had always been taught that i can only do well by spamming practice papers and I got scared since i literally have no papers now but because if your video, ive learnt that what ive been taught is not necessarily true. I'm more confident in studying and acing my upcominf exams in 3 weeks now. Liked and subscribed :>
