I tried this method first. The way that was successful for me was to pull the dash. You can find a video showing. Also when buying your new blend door actuator make sure you get the right on there are two. One for the police (P71) which is manual. I didn't know this and put the wrong one in and had to do the job twice

How did you get the two bolts out in the front??? Even with a 2 x 4 in the dash, I'm still having trouble getting a ratchet even on that bolt closest to the radio.

Hey thanks for the video. I have a 2001 f-150 4.6 2wd with a 4r70w. I was getting a hard shift going between 3rd to 4th and a shutter from time to time, so I decided to follow this video as a guide. I’m running into some trouble now that I’ve got everything buttoned back up. At first the truck wouldn’t go in reverse and when I was in the neutral position it would drive. Park worked just fine. Now the truck won’t stay running, it starts for like maybe 1 second and dies like it’s under a load or something. Any thoughts or comments are very appreciated. TIA

I finally watched up to 20:13 as I stopped for the night after only getting the first and easiest bolt out. Couldnt figure hiw anybody could get those bolts off in the back. Well now I know and yeah I normally try to do everything correctly but sometimes you have to throw in the towel and do what ya can. So glad I saw this video because I really didnt want to remove all of the dash for just 2 bolts

Man I highly recommend buying a endoscope. I dont know how I survived without it and the older you become the more you will love it and use it.

I just finished this actuator replacement on a 2004 Grand Marquis. It was a bear. Tips I learned: You don't have to take the dash loose if you a hammer and chisel to split the old actuator in half which allows you to see the actuator retention screw closest to the fire wall. Removing the radio did not help a bit; it did not help me see anything or allow light on the actuator, so don't mess with radio removal. A ratcheting 8mm box end wrench is required to removing screws securing the actuator. Using a long kitchen butcher knife to remove the insulation above the actuator was critical to getting the actuator re-installed; I tried unsuccessfully for an hour to line up the actuator before I removed this insulation. The replaced actuator refused to function until I recalibrated the Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (ETAC) system, which is really easy to do. Hi Carport Shenanigans, Will this work for a 4R70W from a 1999 E150. I know it a bit different than the 2004 transmission you are working on. For now I put Lucas oil and Instant Shudder fixx and it fixed about 90 % of issues. just want your opinion if your fix would work on a older transmission model. Thanks in advance and great video.

Well there's a half hour of my life I will never get back why didn't you do it first figure it out and then videotape yourself doing it instead of wasting our lives figuring it out on video.

You can get to the bolt by the firewall if you tear the insulation. It'll give you about another inch of room to put a socket and rachet back there to take the bolt out

This is the 5th video ive watched for this repair lol.. why isnt anybody taking the radio out also.. and you dont have to move the dash.. theres little hole behind the radio that you can go threw..(with patients) and get the 2 hard to get bolts. No need to take the dash apart.. only the airbag and airduct.. and radio just so you have openings to be able to see the angles of everything.. someone needs to make a video trying it with the radio out.. i dont make videos so im not gona do it haha

I did this method and if it needs to be done again I will be looking at pulling the dash.

I’m looking to address the shudder issue and want to take care of it - I’m an old shade tree and comfortable taking this on. I have two questions. First - I don’t know if her car has the 4r70 or the 4r75. How do I find out? Or doesn’t it even matter? Second, is the j mod necessary? Seems the work you did in this video took care of the shudder. great tutorial. i went out this morning to get mine done and someone had already been in there and the vent was cut and duct taped. had the whole job done in a couple hours

On my ‘97, the blend door would go to full heat occasionally upon start up and not move unless I unplugged the HVAC control unit to reset it. Determined the blend actuator was wearing out and replaced it following this guy’s demonstration. I was dreading having to drop the dash once again and was so glad I got to avoid that. Problem solved, although with one less screw. Won’t make a difference.

This is such a great video ! Thank you for the time you spent making it. I just took mine apart and cleaned everything up . My truck went from not moving at all to atleast moving forward and shifting through the gears. It won’t go in reverse. I’m waiting on my kit to come in then I’m going to do it again! I just timed the motor when it was clicking to the heat side and unplugged it. This car is not worth 6-8 hrs. of my time. The whole car is made out of balsa wood. These cars suck big time.

That looks a little like too much fun for me a little hesitant with taking it to the shop but damn.......The rough part was when you lost the J-clip, I had to rewind about 4-5 times😂 then you and that damn wasp 😂 ....overall great tutorial

I know it's been quite a while since anybody made a post or comment on this video. I just got done watching it all the way through and was wondering if this would help with my 2005 e250 5.4 van.(4r75w) I'm getting a shutter and slip due to poor pressure. I added some Lucas stop slip which made a big difference. However I'm still getting some shutter and slip pretty much every gear. I will also add that I did the flesh without pressure removing a couple of quarts adding a couple of quarts carefully by removing the return line at the radiator. I'm thinking about attempting this project as it seems like it would help with my pressure problem. Any advice would be very gratefully accepted. Great video. I’m building the same and like the way you did it. I’m only hoisting a 300lbs hitch out of my truck bed. Thinking I can use 2x4s instead of 2x6s. I’m not hoisting an engine.

I got a question for you. I’ve got a 2001 super crew F150 with a 54 motor and I’m sorry I can’t remember the transmission number right off hand but it look a lot like what’s in your video. The truck has 251,000 miles on it Transmission fluid got changed for the first time at 2:18 I think. Most the time the truck does all right every once in while it has a little issues shifting either downshifting when you go to hit the Excelerator or something in the same ballpark or whatever. What I want to know is if me doing what you just done to that one would it be help or hurt the transmission plus is there anything else that I probably need to do as well?

Probably the only tutorial I’ve found on this that doesn’t involve breaking stuff to do it, awesome job man!

Looking to do this on my ‘04 grand Marquis, I believe it has a 4R70W, torque converter is now bucking on slight inclines, previously had shuddering/bucking but I changed the fluid and filter. Is the process the same? Am I better off getting a new Torque converter? 132k miles.
